  • Giants' Brett Cumberland: Signs with Giants

Cumberland signed a minor-league contract with the Giants on Saturday.

A second-round pick by Atlanta in 2016, Cumberland was traded to Baltimore in 2018. While he was unable to get past Triple-A in the Orioles organization, Cumberland is still only 27 years old and will get to start anew with the Giants, likely at Sacramento in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League to begin 2023.

  • Orioles' Brett Cumberland: Dealt to O's

Cumberland was traded from the Braves to the Orioles on Tuesday along with Jean Carlos Encarnacion, Evan Phillips, Bruce Zimmerman and international signing slots in exchange for Kevin Gausman and Darren O'Day.

A 23-year-old switch-hitting catcher who received a promotion to Double-A less than a week ago, Cumberland is a better real-life prospect than a fantasy one, as he is a defensive-minded catcher who could get on base at a high clip (.367 OBP at High-A) while hitting for a fairly low average (.236 AVG at High-A). He has some power (11 home runs, .171 ISO in 341 plate appearances), but given his age, position and inability to hit for a high average, there's no reason to roster him just yet in dynasty leagues unless it's a deep two-catcher league.

  • Braves' Brett Cumberland: Showing power and patience at Low-A

Cumberland, 21, is slashing .263/.432/.531 with 10 home runs and 48 RBI through 55 games for Low-A Rome.

Cumberland has shown excellent power production along with the ability to take a walk during his first taste of full-season ball. He is still striking out too much, though, fanning 61 times during those 55 contests. Nevertheless, his power and plate discipline offer some value, particularly from the catching position.
