  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Returning to AZ

Montgomery exercised his $22.5 million player option for the 2025 season Thursday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. Montgomery signed a deal with the Diamondbacks in March and didn't make his first start until April 19. He never seemed to get on track, however, posting a 6.23 ERA and 1.65 WHIP with just an 83:44 K:BB across 117 innings. Given his struggles, it's little surprise Montgomery exercised his option, and he'll look to rebuild his value in 2025 before heading into free agency.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Takes no-decision in Milwaukee

Montgomery didn't factor in the decision Sunday against the Brewers after giving up three runs on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks over 4.1 innings. The left-hander generated 13 swinging strikes but was unable to get through five frames on 91 pitches. It was the second straight start for Montgomery after making four appearances out of the bullpen, and he's combined to allowed six runs on 12 hits with a 10:4 K:BB across nine frames in his two turns through the rotation. The 31-year-old could shift back to the bullpen for the final few games of the regular season if Ryne Nelson (shoulder) is able to return from the injured list this weekend against the Padres.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Headed for another start Sunday

Montgomery is listed as the Diamondbacks' probable starting pitcher for Sunday's game in Milwaukee, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports. Montgomery picked up his first start since Aug. 21 on Tuesday, joining the rotation as a replacement for the injured Ryne Nelson (shoulder). Though he had been pitching out of the bullpen for nearly a month, Montgomery still took on close to a typical starter's workload (4.2 innings and 79 pitches) while giving up three earned runs on six hits and two walks. Montgomery will likely shift back to the bullpen during the playoffs if the Diamondbacks should clinch a postseason spot, but he'll pick up at least one more start while Nelson is on the shelf.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Loses in return to rotation

Montgomery (8-7) allowed three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four over 4.2 innings to take the loss versus the Rockies on Tuesday. Montgomery made his last four appearances out of the bullpen, posting middling results. He had two scoreless outings, but he allowed seven runs across his other two games in that span. The veteran southpaw has struggled to a 6.23 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 77:42 K:BB through 112.2 innings over 24 appearances (20 starts) this year. Montgomery should get at least one more start due to the absence of Ryne Nelson (shoulder), with that outing projected to be in Milwaukee.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Joining rotation Tuesday

Montgomery is slated to start Tuesday's game against the Rockies at Coors Field, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports. As expected, Montgomery will return to the Arizona rotation as a replacement for the injured Ryne Nelson (shoulder) following a three-week stint in the bullpen. Montgomery shifted to a relief role after producing a 6.44 ERA over his 19 starts this season, and he didn't fare much better over his four appearances out of the bullpen (4.85 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 6:4 K:BB in 13 innings). The southpaw covered three-plus innings in three of those relief outings, so he at least should be relatively stretched out as he re-enters the rotation Tuesday.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Likely to join rotation

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo suggested Saturday that Montgomery is expected to re-enter the rotation as a replacement for Ryne Nelson (shoulder), who was placed on the 15-day injured list, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. "We feel very strongly that could be our best consideration, yes," Lovullo said, when asked if Montgomery would be added to the rotation. "We haven't yet announced it." The Diamondbacks will need a fill-in starter for Nelson for at least two turns through the rotation. Montgomery's most recent outing came Wednesday, when he recorded a three-inning save. Since being moved to the bullpen in late August, the left-hander made four relief appearances, totaling 13 innings. Nelson had been scheduled to start Monday or Tuesday, and Montgomery should be a candidate to take the hill one of those days. It's unclear if Montgomery is stretched out enough to handle a typical starter's workload, however, so the Diamondbacks could end up deploying a long reliever such as Yilber Diaz behind him.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Collects three-inning save

Montgomery recorded his first career save in Wednesday's 14-4 rout of the Rangers, giving up two hits and a walk over three scoreless innings of relief. An early exit for Merrill Kelly (hamstring) threatened to tax the Arizona bullpen, but after three other relievers covered the fifth and sixth innings, Montgomery breezed through the final three frames on 37 pitches (23 strikes). The veteran lefty hasn't had a smooth adjustment to long-relief duties, and over his last four appearances he's posted a 4.85 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 6:4 K:BB in 13 innings. Expect Montgomery to continue being used only in low-leverage situations.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Shakes off leg contusion

Montgomery (lower leg) made a relief appearance in Friday's 8-0 loss to the Astros, giving up four earned runs on four hits and one walk while striking out three. Montgomery was lifted from his prior appearance in Monday's 11-6 loss to the Dodgers after being struck in the lower right leg with a comebacker, but he was diagnosed with a bruise after subsequent tests returned negative. After a few days of rest, Montgomery was available out of the bullpen, where he'll likely remain for the rest of the season so long as Arizona's current five starters are healthy. Expect Montgomery to continue working mostly in lower-leverage spots.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Dealing with contusion

Montgomery (lower leg) was diagnosed with a contusion after leaving Monday's game against the Dodgers, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. Montgomery was forced to leave Monday's game after taking a comebacker to his right leg. While he may not be available for a couple days, it appears that he avoided serious injury.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Exits appearance with injury

Montgomery was removed from Monday's appearance versus the Dodgers in the seventh inning after being hit in the lower right leg with a comebacker, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports. The left-hander immediately developed a sizable welt on his leg after being hit with a Teoscar Hernandez comebacker. Montgomery was making his second relief appearance since being demoted to the bullpen and was charged with three runs over 2.2 innings. The Diamondbacks should have more on Montgomery's condition after the game.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Headed to bullpen

The Diamondbacks plan to move Montgomery to the bullpen beginning with this weekend's series in Boston, John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM reports. Montgomery has never got on track after signing late in spring training with Arizona and not making his season debut until late April. The left-hander has posted an ugly 6.44 ERA and 67:36 K:BB over 95 innings covering 19 starts, and with Ryne Nelson thriving of late, Nelson will retain his spot in the rotation while Montgomery moves to a long-relief role.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Serves up six runs against Marlins

Montgomery allowed six runs on 10 hits and one walk while striking out four batters over 5.2 innings in a no-decision against Miami on Wednesday. Most of the damage against Montgomery came in the fourth inning, when the Marlins pounded out four runs on five hits, including three extra-base knocks. The southpaw at least managed to hang around nearly two additional frames to reduce the burden on Arizona's bullpen, but the 10 total hits he allowed tied a season-worst mark. Montgomery has been prone to blow-ups this season, yielding at least six earned runs on six different occasions. That's a big reason why his ERA sits at an unsightly 6.44 through 95 innings.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Racks up eight Ks in win

Montgomery (8-6) picked up the win Wednesday against Colorado, allowing three earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out eight in six innings. Montgomery had one of his best starts of the season Wednesday, notching his first quality start since June 21 while registering a season-high eight punchouts. The 31-year-old still need sto clean up his control to become more consistent -- Montgomery has now issued multiple free passes in four consecutive starts and his 3.5 BB/9 this season is a far cry from his career mark of 2.6. The southpaw owns an ugly 6.25 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 63:35 K:BB across 89.1 innings (18 starts) this season. Montgomery will look to build momentum in his next scheduled start, a favorable matchup in Miami early next week.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Falls apart late

Montgomery (7-6) took the loss against the Phillies on Thursday, allowing four runs on eight hits and three walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out four. Montgomery allowed at least one hit in each of the first five innings but managed to keep the Phillies off the board while pitching his way out of multiple jams. However, the veteran lefty's luck would run out in the sixth after he hit Nick Castellanos with a pitch, as he then failed to retire three of the next four batters before being relieved by Dylan Floro with two outs. Three of the four runs charged to Montgomery came across after he left the contest. He's failed to make it through six innings in five consecutive starts, and Montgomery has also issued multiple walks in each of his last three outings while posting only eight strikeouts over that stretch.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Looks good in rain-shortened start

Montgomery did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Pirates, allowing one run on one hit and two walks over three innings. He struck out three. The veteran southpaw was looking sharp until rain created a 68-minute delay in the middle of the fourth inning, ending Montgomery's day prematurely. While the delay was out of his control, he hasn't been able to give Arizona much length even under ideal conditions -- Montgomery's completed six innings only once in his last nine trips to the mound, posting a brutal 8.20 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 27:17 K:BB through 37.1 innings over that stretch. He'll try to build on Saturday's performance in his next start, which is scheduled to come at home next week against the Phillies.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Back from IL, starting Tuesday

The Diamondbacks reinstated Montgomery (knee) from the 15-day injured list to start Tuesday against the Royals, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. The veteran left-hander has been on the shelf nearly a month due to right knee inflammation and is returning to Arizona's rotation without a minor-league rehab assignment. Montgomery threw 56 pitches in a simulated game Thursday and will likely face some minor workload limitations in his first couple starts back with the Diamondbacks.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Returning Tuesday

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo confirmed Monday that Montgomery (knee) will return from the 15-day injured list to start Tuesday against Kansas City, MLB.com reports. The left-hander threw a string of bullpen sessions and simulated game in preparation for Tuesday's start.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: On track to return early next week

Montgomery (knee) is on track to rejoin the Diamondbacks' rotation early next week in Kansas City after completing a three-inning, 56-pitch simulated game Thursday, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports. Montgomery has been shelved since late June with right knee inflammation, but a return is right around the corner. He will skip a rehab assignment, with the Diamondbacks deeming a trio of simulated games enough to get the veteran left-hander ramped back up. Montgomery holds a disappointing 6.44 ERA in 13 starts for Arizona this season.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Should be back after All-Star break

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Sunday that he feels good about Montgomery's (knee) chances of returning from the 15-day injured list for the first turn through the rotation coming out of the All-Star break, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. Montgomery threw a two-inning, 40-pitch simulated bullpen session Friday and apparently responded favorably. Though he won't have the opportunity to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment during the upcoming week due to the All-Star break, the southpaw should be able to push up his pitch count with another simulated game in Arizona. Lovullo didn't specify whether Montgomery was likely to start in the Diamondbacks' first series of the second half next weekend in Arizona or the following series in Kansas City, but the club already opened up a spot in the rotation for the 31-year-old when they optioned Slade Cecconi to Triple-A Reno on Thursday.

The Diamondbacks believe he'll be ready to go for the first turn of the rotation following the All-Star break. The left-hander was placed on the injured list July 2 with right knee inflammation.
