  • Edgar Santana: Released by Braves

Santana (ribs) was released by the Braves on Wednesday. The 30-year-old pitched in 41 games for the Braves this year, compiling a 3.59 ERA and 1.15 WHIP with 33 strikeouts over 42.2 innings. The move opened a spot on the 40-man roster for Tucker Davidson, who was added to the World Series roster to replace Charlie Morton (leg).

  • Braves' Edgar Santana: Out with intercostal strain

Santana was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday with a right intercostal strain. The move is retroactive to Sept. 28. It's unclear exactly how long the right-hander has been dealing with the injury, as his only appearance in the past three weeks came on Sept. 20. Since the move is backdated, Santana will be eligible to be activated for the first game of the NLDS next Friday, though it's unclear if he's expected to be healthy by that point.

  • Braves' Edgar Santana: Reinstated Saturday

Santana was reinstated from the paternity list prior to Saturday's game against the Padres. He has given up one earned run with two strikeouts and three walks in five innings across five appearances this month. Look for Santana to work in low-leverage situations down the stretch.

  • Braves' Edgar Santana: Lands on paternity list

  • Braves' Edgar Santana: Back in big leagues

Santana was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday. The right-hander was demoted to Gwinnett on Sunday but will quickly rejoin Atlanta with Josh Tomlin (neck) heading to the injured list. Santana has a 3.82 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 31:9 K:BB over 37.2 major-league innings this season.

  • Braves' Edgar Santana: Heads to Triple-A

Atlanta optioned Santana to Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday. Santana was cast off the active roster to make room for starting pitcher Ian Anderson (shoulder), who was reinstated from the 10-day injured list ahead of his scheduled outing Sunday versus the Giants. Though he scooped up fluky wins in three straight relief appearances earlier this month, Santana has worked in largely low-leverage spots out of the Atlanta bullpen this season. Over 37.2 innings, he's recorded a 3.82 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and three holds.

  • Braves' Edgar Santana: Snags win Friday

Santana (2-0) retired the only batter he faced via strikeout and earned the win Friday over Washington. Starter Kyle Muller wasn't able to complete five innings, so Santana was brought into the game. He struck out Victor Robles, and the right-hander ended up in line for a win when Atlanta rallied in the bottom of the fifth. Santana has allowed just three runs in his last 13.1 innings dating back to the start of July, but he has yet to see much high-leverage work. The 29-year-old has a 3.51 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 27:7 K:BB across 33.1 innings while adding three holds.

  • Braves' Edgar Santana: On roll heading into break

Santana has allowed only one run over his last eight appearances (nine innings) dating back to June 18, posting a 1.00 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 11:3 K:BB over that stretch. The 29-year-old right-hander isn't seeing much high-leverage work -- he has zero wins, saves or holds during that time -- but the performance could move him up in the bullpen pecking order in the second half. Santana's best route to fantasy value might come if Atlanta is forced to deploy bullpen games more often to cover the holes in its rotation.

Santana has made four relief appearances for Atlanta this year and has allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out one in three innings.

Santana was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday. The 29-year-old was called up by Atlanta at the end of April and gave up two runs on four hits with one strikeout and two walks in four appearances. Santana could return to the majors later in the year as the team rotates its bullpen pieces.

  • Braves' Edgar Santana: Joins big-league bullpen

Santana was recalled by Atlanta on Friday. Santana was picked up in a trade from Pittsburgh in early April. He hasn't pitched since 2018 due to Tommy John surgery and a PED suspension, but his 3.31 ERA in 84.1 innings of relief at the highest level suggests he can be a useful member of the Atlanta bullpen.

  • Braves' Edgar Santana: Shipped to Atlanta

Santana was acquired by Atlanta from the Pirates on Friday in exchange for cash considerations. The 29-year-old will head to the alternate training site for his new team after being designated for assignment by Pittsburgh at the start of the week. Santana last pitched in 2018 due to Tommy John surgery and a PED suspension, but he's performed well across 88 big-league appearances with a 3.31 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 74:24 K:BB over 84.1 innings.

  • Pirates' Edgar Santana: Designated for assignment

Santana was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Monday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. Santana will make room on the 40-man roster for Kyle Keller, acquired in a trade from the Angels in a corresponding move. Santana hasn't pitched since 2018 due to Tommy John surgery and a PED suspension, but his 3.31 ERA in 84.1 innings at the major-league level could lead another team to claim him off waivers.

  • Pirates' Edgar Santana: Sent to minors

Santana was optioned off the major-league roster Monday. Santana was potentially in the mix for a bullpen spot but didn't help his chances with a poor spring, allowing seven runs in 4.2 innings. • Pirates' Edgar Santana: Encouraging Friday debut

Santana made his spring debut Friday, striking out one batter in a scoreless inning against the Phillies, DK Pittsburgh Sports reports. He threw seven of nine pitches for strikes, sat consistently at 93 mph with his fastball and retired the side in order. Santana missed the 2019 season recovering from Tommy John surgery and served a suspension last year after testing positive for PEDs. The 29-year-old registered a 3.26 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 66.1 innings with a 54:12 K:BB in 2018. While he's behind the likes of Richard Rodriguez, Kyle Crick and others for save opportunities, he could eventually move into high-leverage situations as he works his way back from a two-year absence.

  • Pirates' Edgar Santana: Moves to restricted list

The Pirates placed Santana (suspension) on the restricted list Sunday. Pittsburgh made the move shortly after it was announced Sunday that Santana had received an 80-game suspension following his positive test for the performance-enhancing substance Boldenon. The transaction opens up an extra spot on the 40-man roster and spells an official end to the right-hander's season, as he won't be an option with the Pirates only playing 60 games in 2020. He'll serve out the final 20 games of his suspension at the start of the 2021 season.

  • Pirates' Edgar Santana: Optioned to minors

Santana was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday. Santana was able to pitch this spring after missing all of 2019 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. While he's apparently healthy, he won't be opening the season in the big leagues despite his strong 3.31 ERA in 84.1 career innings at the highest level.

  • Pirates' Edgar Santana: Limited to bullpen sessions

Santana (elbow) has been throwing bullpen sessions at the Pirates' spring-training complex in Bradenton, Fla. over the past few weeks, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. The same applies to Chad Kuhl (elbow), who like Santana, is also working his way back from Tommy John surgery. Both pitchers previously left the door open for returning late in the 2019 season, but the fact that neither has advanced to facing live hitters yet suggests that may no longer be a realistic goal. Assuming he avoids any further setbacks in his rehab, however, Santana should be back to full strength or close to it next spring.

  • Pirates' Edgar Santana: Throws off slope

Santana (elbow) threw off a slope this week, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports. Teams have slopes at their spring training complexes, which are essentially mini mounds. Santana is working his way back from Tommy John surgery, but is not expected to return until spring training of 2020.

  • Pirates' Edgar Santana: Ups throwing distance

Santana (elbow) recently increased his throwing distance off flat ground to 90 feet, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. Both Santana and Chad Kuhl are at the same stage of their respective recoveries from Tommy John surgery and aren't expected to resume mound work until later in the season. Santana is slated to miss the entire 2019 campaign but should report to camp next spring with few restrictions, if any.
