The right-hander tossed 49 of 78 pitches for strikes against a Boston lineup that featured Ceddanne Rafaela as its only big-league regular. Elder looks just about ready for the start of the regular season, having posted a 12:5 K:BB and 4.72 ERA this spring over 13.1 innings, and he's locked into a rotation spot with Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow), Hurston Waldrep (elbow) and Joey Wentz (knee) all on the shelf.

  Elder gave up three hits over three scoreless innings in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Tigers. He struck out one without walking a batter. The right-hander tossed 24 of 41 pitches for strikes before turning the ball over to Joey Wentz, who also blanked Detroit over three innings. Elder and Wentz are nominally battling for Atlanta's fifth starter job, but a busy early-season schedule will likely mean the competition extends past Opening Day as the team runs with a six-man rotation for the first couple weeks. Elder has allowed one run through five innings over his first two spring appearances with a 4:0 K:BB.

Elder is battling Joey Wentz for the fifth starter role, but that competition will probably extend into the regular season with the team having to give serious thought to deploying a six-man rotation for the first couple weeks. Elder made 28 starts for Atlanta in 2025, posting a 5.30 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 131:51 K:BB in 156.1 innings.

  Elder could begin the season as Atlanta's No. 5 starter with Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow) on the 60-day IL, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. Atlanta's pitching depth will be tested right out of the gate, with Elder, Joey Wentz and prospect Hurston Waldrep viewed as the top candidates to fill in for Schwellenbach. Elder made 28 starts for the team in 2025, and while his overall 5.30 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 131:51 K:BB over 156.1 innings weren't very encouraging, the right-hander did have a strong finish to the campaign with a 2.82 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 41:8 K:BB over his final seven starts and 44.2 innings. Both Wentz and Elder are out of minor-league options, giving them a leg up on Waldrep for a spot on the 26-man roster -- either as the fifth starter or as a long man in the bullpen.

Elder will be trying to keep the good times rolling this weekend at home against the Astros. Through 138 innings, he has a 1.41 WHIP and 111:48 K:BB to go with the aforementioned 5.35 ERA.

The right-hander held a very dangerous offense in check over 96 pitches (58 strikes), with only a leadoff walk to Kyle Schwarber in the fourth inning coming back to bite him. The quality start was Elder's fourth in six August starts, but he wraps up the month with a 4.82 ERA and 26:12 K:BB in 37.1 innings despite a 1.15 WHIP. He lines up to make his next trip to the mound at home next weekend against the Mariners.

The right-hander pitched well and kept Cincinnati off the board until the sixth inning, though a lack of run support forced Elder to settle for his seventh quality start of the year but not a win. It was a solid rebound effort after he'd been shellacked for eight runs in 2.2 innings in his prior outing, but Elder still carries a 7.38 ERA, 1.84 WHIP and 45:24 K:BB through 50 innings since he rejoined the big-league staff at the beginning of June. Elder didn't quite pack the strikeout punch he had in his previous two starts when he logged eight and six Ks, respectively. He made up for it by not allowing a single extra-base hit and retiring 15 of the final 18 batters he faced after giving up a run in the opening frame. Atlanta led 4-1 when Elder exited after six innings, but Washington rallied to score four runs in the closing three frames to steal the victory. Through 44 innings, Elder has a 4.50 ERA and a 33:13 K:BB. Elder is scheduled to face the Nationals again Wednesday.

The right-hander has allowed at least three runs in all three of his starts this season, pitching to a 7.20 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 10:5 K:BB over 15 innings. It's not the start to the year he needed after struggling with a 6.52 ERA and 1.63 WHIP in 2024. He remains in the rotation for now and is tentatively lined up for a home start versus the Cardinals next week, but Atlanta may have to explore other options if Elder can't turn things around soon.

Elder started out nicely by facing just one over the minimum through two innings, but he proceeded to give up five runs over the next four frames, including a two-run home run to Danny Jansen in the fourth inning and a solo shot to Christopher Morel in the sixth. Elder was inserted into Atlanta's rotation after Reynaldo Lopez (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day injured list March 31. Elder has struggled in his two starts in the majors this season, posting a 7.20 ERA and 1.40 WHIP across 10 innings. The 25-year-old right-hander could lose his spot in Atlanta's rotation and be sent back to Triple-A Gwinnett if Spencer Strider (elbow) returns from the injured list next week.
