  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Roughed up by Toronto

Bello allowed four runs on four hits and one walk while striking out two over 1.1 innings during Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays. He didn't factor into the decision.

Bello got off to a rocky start in his first action of the spring, as he was touched up for four runs in the top of the first inning and then removed in the middle of the frame after hurling 24 pitches. He would return for the top of the second inning and responded well by firing a scoreless frame. Bello put together the best season of his young career a year ago, posting a 3.35 ERA with 124 strikeouts over 166.2 regular-season innings, so there's little reason to worry about a poor outing this early in the spring.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Adding curveball to mix

Bello is re-introducing a curveball to his arsenal this spring, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

With assistance from new teammate Ranger Suarez, Bello is expanding a repertoire that already includes a four-seamer, sinker, cutter, sweeper/slider and changeup. Bello, who came to the majors as a 23-year-old in 2022, threw a curve earlier in his career but couldn't find the right shape or proper arm slot for it. Red Sox pitching coach Andrew Bailey believes that Bello, through his experience at the MLB level, has developed to a point where he understands the benefits of horizontal and vertical breaks against hitters from either side of the plate. Adding back the curveball gives him another weapon to serve that goal. Bello is projected to slot fourth in Boston's rotation.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Part of trade talks

Bello has been the subject of recent trade talks, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

According to a December report from Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic, the Red Sox "quietly shopped" Bello -- something the organization disputed at the time -- and a league source confirmed to McCaffrey that Bello's name has surfaced in trade discussions. What's changed since December is that Boston's added several starters and has a wealth of starting options. In addition to Bello, Patrick Sandoval and Jordan Hicks are generating interest. The 26-year-old Bello is entering the third year of a six-year deal and is seen as a young, controllable mid-rotation starter another organization might covet. Apparently, Boston is more likely to trade Bello than its top prospects, Connelly Early or Payton Tolle. Bello posted a 3.35 ERA in 2025, but it could have been higher given a favorable BABIP (.268) and a lack of swing-and-miss ability (17.7 K%, 6.7 K/9).

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Coughs up two in brief start

Bello didn't factor into the decision during Wednesday's 4-3 loss to the Yankees, giving up two earned runs on four hits and a walk over 2.1 innings. He failed to record a strikeout.

Bello put himself in a hole early by giving up a two-run homer to Ben Rice in the first inning. The 26-year-old righty picked up the next four outs with relatively little trouble while Boston's offense tied the game, but after allowing two men to reach with one out in the third, he got the hook after only 28 pitches. Because his appearance was so short, Bello may be available to take the mound again early in the ALDS, though the Red Sox will first need to leave Yankee Stadium with a win in Game 3.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Takes third straight loss

Bello (11-9) took the loss Thursday against the Blue Jays, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks while striking out three over five-plus innings.

Bello was great through the first five innings, finding little trouble outside of a bases-loaded jam in the third, but his outing fell apart in the sixth. An error, a walk and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases and forced the right-hander's exit, with Daulton Varsho then immediately delivering a grand slam off Justin Wilson. With little run support behind him, Bello was handed his third consecutive loss. The 26-year-old has completed six innings just once in his last five outings, posting a 5.40 ERA during that span, and assuming he doesn't pitch again during the regular season, he'll finish with a 3.35 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 124:59 K:BB across 166.2 innings.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Struggles to provide length in loss

Bello (11-8) was charged with the loss Thursday against the Athletics, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks in four innings. He struck out three.

It was the first time Bello was unable fire at least five innings since way back on May 28, and the 70 pitches represented his second-lowest total of the season. The month of September hasn't been kind so far for the right-hander, who has a 5.85 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 13:9 K:BB across his last 20 innings. Bello will be aiming to right the ship in what may be his final appearance of the regular season next week in Toronto, where he'll bring a career-best 3.34 ERA and 1.24 WHIP to go with a 121:56 K:BB over 161.2 frames.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Stumbles against Yanks

Bello (11-7) took the loss Saturday as the Red Sox were downed 5-3 by the Yankees, giving up four runs on five hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out four.

The right-hander was tagged for more than three runs for the first time since Aug. 10, which was also the last time he got handed a losing decision. Bello has given Boston at least five innings in every start since the beginning of June, posting a 3.06 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 89:32 K:BB over 117.2 innings during that time. He'll try to get back in the win column in his next outing, which lines up to come at home next week against the A's.
