Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Gets start at second base
Mayer started at second base and went 1-for-3 with a walk, a triple and a run scored in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Tigers.
Mayer, Boston's shortstop of the future, made his first Grapefruit League start at second base. Until Wednesday, he'd started at shortstop and third base this spring. This move is notable, because Red Sox manager Alex Cora hasn't named a starter at second base yet. One candidate, Vaughn Grissom, was removed from the calculus after he was assigned to minor-league camp Wednesday. It may be unlikely that Mayer, who has yet to take an at-bat at the Triple-A level, wins the job, but the manager insisted to Ian Browne of MLB.com that "everybody has a shot."

Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Moves past illness
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Thursday that Mayer has recovered from a stomach illness and plans to play in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.
One of multiple players in Red Sox camp who has succumbed to a stomach bug in recent days, Mayer is the first of the ailing players to regain health and resume working out. The illness thus doesn't look like it'll be anything that sets Mayer back heading into the season, but the 22-year-old shortstop remains likely to open at Triple-A Worcester rather than with the big club.

Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Battling stomach bug
Mayer won't be available for Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Pirates while he recovers from a stomach illness, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
The stomach bug appears to be making its way around Red Sox camp, as fellow top prospect Roman Anthony fell ill earlier this week and will also remain out of the lineup Tuesday. Mayer should require just a few days to move past the ailment, but his time in big-league camp is likely to come to an end in the near future anyway. The 22-year-old shortstop is expected to open the 2025 season at Triple-A Worcester and could make his big-league debut at some point later on in the campaign.

Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Has perfect Thursday
Mayer started at third base and went 3-for-3 with a triple, a home run and three RBI during Thursday's spring game against Detroit.
The Red Sox flexed their prospect muscle Thursday, bringing Mayer, Roman Anthony and Kristian Campbell along for a road game. Mayer had the best performance of the bunch and heeded manager Alex Cora's advice early by delivering a run on a first-inning triple to left-center. "We were talking about his swing today," Cora told Ian Browne of MLB.com. "In BP, he was rotational. He was pulling everything, and I talked to him a little bit. His first BP a few weeks ago, he was driving the ball to left-center, and that plays. I know we live in an environment where we preach 'Pull the ball in the air,' but he can drive the ball to left-center." Mayer eventually got his "pull" on, belting a two-run home run over the right-field fence in the fifth. He's likely to start the season at Triple-A Worcester, which would be his first exposure to the highest level of the minors.

Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Healthy for spring training
Mayer (back) took batting practice Wednesday and appears to be a full participant for the start of spring training, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
Mayer finished the 2024 season on Triple-A Worcester's 7-day injured list while he dealt with a lumbar strain, but he was cleared to resume baseball activities early in the offseason and doesn't look to be operating under any restrictions during his first big-league camp. The 22-year-old isn't a serious candidate to make the Opening Day roster, but a midseason debut is possible if he displays improved durability with Worcester while maintaining the improved plate skills he demonstrated with Double-A Portland. Before getting promoted to Worcester and being placed on the IL soon after, Mayer slashed .307/.370/.480 with eight home runs, 13 stolen bases and a 19.7 percent strikeout rate over 335 plate appearances at Double-A.

Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Increasing versatility
Manager Alex Cora said Saturday that the Red Sox plan to give Mayer (back) more time at second and third base, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
Mayer has been used almost exclusively at shortstop while rising through the ranks of Boston's farm system, playing just two games at third base in three seasons. He's expected to begin the new season at Triple-A Worcester, and adding some defensive versatility figures to give him a better shot at making his big-league debut midway through the year.
