Chaparro pinch hit for Jose Tena in the sixth inning, and the former answered the call by smacking a two-run double to left field before coming home to score in the same frame. Despite passing concussion tests after he made an early exit from Sunday's 4-2 loss to Atlanta when he was struck in the helmet by a pitch, Chaparro will be kept on the bench for the series opener in Philadelphia. Even though the Nationals traded Luis Garcia to the Yankees following Sunday's contest, Chaparro could end up sticking in his short-side platoon role at first base rather than seeing a major uptick in an opportunities against right-handed pitching. Washington recalled the left-handed-hitting Abimelec Ortiz from Triple-A Rochester on Monday, and he'll step in at first base right away in the Nationals' first game post-Garcia while right-hander Aaron Nola toes the slab for the Phillies.

Nationals manager Blake Butera said after Sunday's 4-2 loss to Atlanta that Chaparro (head) passed a concussion test, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports.
A late addition to the starting nine after Luis Garcia was scratched, Chaparro grounded out in his first plate appearance of the day, then was struck in the helmet by a pitch in the top of the fourth with the bases loaded. Chaparro was able to take his base and was credited with an RBI, but the Nationals removed him from the contest in the top of the fifth, seemingly as a precaution. Assuming Chaparro doesn't experience any symptoms leading up to Monday's series opener in Philadelphia, he could soon find himself back in the starting nine. Per Zuckerman, Butera said after the game that Garcia didn't play Sunday because "something was really close" on a trade, and the Nationals could finalize a deal prior to Monday's deadline.

The 27-year-old replaced Luis Garcia (knee) in the seventh inning and took Elieser Hernandez deep in the ninth. Chaparro is up to six homers in the majors this season, and five of them have come in 10 games since the All-Star break, a stretch in which he's batting .360 (9-for-25) with two doubles, eight runs and 13 RBI. Garcia's name was already showing up in trade rumors, and if he's removed from the picture at first base either due to injury or being dealt, Chaparro could get more consistent playing time over the final weeks of the season.

Chaparro unloaded on the first pitch he saw Monday, walloping a three-run homer to open the scoring in the first inning. The first baseman has gone 5-for-11 (.455) with three homers and 11 RBI over his past three games after totaling one long ball and seven RBI across 31 contests before the All-Star break. The right-handed-hitting Chaparro is used almost exclusively in a short-side platoon role against left-handed pitching, with Daylen Lile replacing him in the seventh inning after Colorado brought in a right-handed reliever.
Chaparro went 4-for-5 with two home runs, eight total RBI and four total runs scored in Friday's 23-4 win over the A's.
Chaparro went yard twice in this game, launching a two-run blast off Jose Suarez in the fifth inning and a three-run long ball off Yunior Tur in the seventh. Chaparro has three homers this season, and all of them have come since the beginning of July. He's played just seven games since the beginning of the month but has been productive in a small sample, hitting .429 with a 1.538 OPS in 15 plate appearances. Those numbers aren't sustainable, but Chaparro could be a player to look at as a waiver pickup as long as he's carrying a hot bat.

The 26-year-old took Tom Cosgrove deep in the fifth inning, Chaparro's second homer of the spring. He hasn't exactly impressed in camp, batting .263 (5-for-19) over 10 appearances, but his main competition for the starting job at first base, prospect Abimelec Ortiz, has gone just 2-for-16 with six strikeouts. The biggest threat to Chaparro's job security this season might actually come from Luis Garcia, if the Nationals decide they can no longer live with his glove at second base. Chaparro will also need to improve his own performance to stick around -- in 205 career big-league plate appearances, he's managed just a .203/.268/.358 slash line with five homers.
