  • Moises Gomez: Released by St. Louis

The Cardinals released Gomez on Tuesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. Gomez made waves in 2022 when he slugged 39 home runs between the Double- and Triple-A levels, earning a spot on St. Louis' 40-man roster. He's disappointed since then, however, getting removed from the 40-man roster back in January and now being cut loose. Gomez will now look to latch on in another organization.

  • Cardinals' Moises Gomez: Outrighted to Triple-A

Gomez cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Memphis on Friday. Gomez hit 30 home runs at Memphis in 2023 after clubbing 39 between Double- and Triple-A in 2022. However, the power also came with a 33.1 percent strikeout rate and poor defense, which clearly impacted his appeal on waivers. He'll remain in the Cardinals organization as outfield depth.

  • Cardinals' Moises Gomez: Jettisoned from 40-man roster

Gomez was designated for assignment by the Cardinals on Monday. Gomez loses his spot on the 40-man roster in favor of Alfonso Rivas, who was claimed off waivers from the Angels. The 25-year-old Gomez has slugged 69 home runs over the last two seasons in the minors but has also struck out at a 33.1 percent clip over that time. Even with the swing-and-miss concerns, Gomez could draw interest on waivers with his power and relative youth.

  • Cardinals' Moises Gomez: Optioned out to Triple-A

Gomez was optioned to Triple-A Memphis by the Cardinals on Thursday. Gomez was sporting a weak .589 OPS through 35 plate appearances this spring in the Grapefruit League. He racked up 39 homers in 120 games last year between Double-A and Triple-A, putting him in line to likely make his MLB debut at some point in 2023.

  • Cardinals' Moises Gomez: Joining 40-man roster

The Cardinals will add Gomez to their 40-man roster this offseason, Daniel Guerrero of MLB.com reports. Signed to a minor-league deal last winter after washing out with the Rays, Gomez showed a lot of promise in the minors during his first year in the St. Louis organization. Over his 501 plate appearances between Triple-A Memphis and Double-A Springfield, Gomez slashed .294/.371/.624 with a franchise minor-league record 39 home runs. That immense power production put the 24-year-old back on the prospect radar, and it comes as no surprise that the Cardinals are choosing to protect him from December's Rule 5 draft by adding him to the 40-man roster. Gomez is still likely to open the 2023 season at Triple-A, barring a big spring training in which he hits his way on to the Cardinals' Opening Day roster.

  • Cardinals' Moises Gomez: Promoted to Triple-A

The Cardinals promoted Gomez from Double-A Springfield to Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday. After being released by the Rays in October, Gomez caught on with the Cardinals in November and has emerged as one of baseball's breakout prospects in 2022. The 23-year-old will receive a well-deserved appointment to the Cardinals' top affiliate after he tortured Texas League pitching to the tune of a .321/.398/.705 slash line while slugging 23 home runs and chipping in six stolen bases across 256 plate appearances. However, Gomez has struck out at an elevated 35.2 percent clip, so he could struggle to maintain his power production against more advanced Triple-A pitching if he's unable to show an improvement in his contact rate.

  • Cardinals' Moises Gomez: Post-hype breakout at Double-A

Gomez, 23, is hitting .455 with nine home runs in 12 games at Double-A Springfield. Only four of his nine homers have come in the favorable home park in Springfield, with the other five coming in Arkansas, which played as a pitcher's park in 2021. He became a free agent after spending seven years in the Rays organization and then signed a minor-league contract with the Cardinals. A year ago, Gomez struck out at a 38.2 percent clip at Double-A, and this year he has cut that to 22.4 percent, albeit in a small sample. He was a prospect of note a few years ago after impressing at Low-A, and he's not so old that he should be ignored in dynasty leagues.

  • Brewers' Moises Gomez: Signs with Milwaukee

Gomez signed a minor-league contract with the Brewers on Thursday. Gomez spent the entire 2021 campaign at Double-A Montgomery and slashed .171/.256/.309 with eight homers, 34 runs, 23 RBI and five stolen bases. He'll receive an invite to major-league camp this spring.

  • Rays' Moises Gomez: Flashes before reassignment

Gomez, who Adam Berry of MLB.com reports was reassigned to minor league camp Monday, has hit .364 (4-for-11) with two home runs, three RBI, one walk and two runs across eight Grapefruit League games thus far. Despite the modest sample, it's an impressive spring stint for the 22-year-old, whose 2019 tenure at High-A Charlotte represents his highest professional stop to date. The pair of round trippers is particularly noteworthy for Gomez, who worked this past offseason on adding upper-body strength and who already slugged a total of 35 minor-league homers across 241 games in the 2018 and 2019 campaigns. Despite the reassignment, the outfielder will still have a chance to continue honing his craft in back-field games -- and potentially even more Grapefruit League contests -- due to the delayed start of the 2021 minor-league season.
