Top Gabriel Moreno News

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Expected back Tuesday

Moreno (oblique) is on track to be activated from the 10-day injured list Tuesday for the start of the Diamondbacks' road trip, John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM reports.

Moreno has missed nearly two weeks of action with a left oblique strain, but he has upped his activity level recently and has responded well. It's unclear whether the Diamondbacks will ask Moreno to go out on a short rehab assignment before returning. Arizona has been going with James McCann and Adrian Del Castillo at catcher since Moreno was injured.

  • Diamondbacks' Adrian Del Castillo: Continues to hit

Del Castillo served as the designated hitter and went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, an RBI and a run scored in Sunday's 10-4 loss to the Blue Jays.

One of the few positives to take away from the blowout loss was Del Castillo's continued production. He's slashing .333/.353/.545 with 11 RBI over nine games since coming off the injured list. With a third catcher having been called up to help fill-in for the injured Gabriel Moreno (oblique), manager Torey Lovullo can deploy Del Castillo and his bat at DH when James McCann is behind the plate.

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Takes part in catching drills

Moreno (oblique) was spotted taking part in catching drills and playing catch on the field prior to Sunday's 10-4 loss to the Blue Jays, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Arizona placed Moreno on the 10-day injured list Tuesday due to a left oblique strain, but the team is optimistic that the catcher will avoid a long-term absence and return to action in about two weeks, per MLB.com. Moreno's involvement in drills just a few days after landing on the shelf would seem to be a sign that he's trending in the right direction, but he still may need to complete a minor-league rehab assignment prior to being activated. In the meantime, the Diamondbacks will lean primarily on Adrian Del Castillo and James McCann to handle catching duties.

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Moves to IL with oblique strain

The Diamondbacks placed Moreno on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, retroactive to April 11, due to a left oblique strain.

Manager Torey Lovullo previously indicated that Moreno would be placed on the injured list after exiting early Friday versus the Phillies, but the diagnosis of an oblique strain is a significant development after he was initially said to be dealing with lower-back tightness. The 26-year-old is without an official timeline for his return but will be eligible to be reinstated April 21, though a longer absence seems likely given the nature of the injury. Aramis Garcia was called up to provide some more catching depth, but it'll likely be James McCann and Adrian Del Castillo that see more consistent work behind the plate for Arizona.

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: IL stint coming

Manager Torey Lovullo said Saturday that Moreno (back) will be placed on the injured list, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

The Diamondbacks sent Moreno in for an MRI on his back Saturday, and although the results are unknown, the team has already decided to place him on the IL. Lovullo added that Moreno isn't facing an extended absence, so the 26-year-old could return to the active roster after the minimum 10 days. James McCann figures to take over as Arizona's primary backstop while Moreno is sidelined.

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Sitting out Saturday

Moreno (back) isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Phillies.

Lower-back tightness forced Moreno to make an early exit from Friday's game and will now also cause him to miss a start. Adrian Del Castillo will start behind the plate with Moreno on the bench.

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Exits early Friday

Moreno was removed from Friday's game against the Phillies due to lower-back tightness.

The severity of Moreno's injury remains unknown, but the Diamondbacks may have more information after Friday's contest. James McCann replaced the 26-year-old behind the dish and would be in line to start at catcher if Moreno is forced to miss time.

Moreno went 2-for-2 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored in Thursday's 7-1 win over the Mets.

Moreno doubled in a run as a pinch hitter and later scored in the seventh inning before adding to Arizona's lead with another run-producing double in the eighth. It was the fifth multi-hit effort in 12 games for Moreno, who is slashing .282/.341/.410 with five doubles and five RBI.

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Sitting out Thursday

Moreno is not in the lineup for Thursday's game versus the Mets.

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Taking seat Sunday

Moreno is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against Atlanta, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Moreno will sit Sunday after a run of six straight starts, during which he went 5-for-21 with two walks, two doubles, two RBI and three runs. James McCann is doing the catching for Brandon Pfaadt in the series finale.

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Idle Saturday

Moreno isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Dodgers.

Moreno will take a seat during Saturday's series finale after going 2-for-8 with a run scored over the first two games. James McCann will instead make his first start of the season at catcher and bat eighth.

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Returns to catching

Moreno started at catcher and went 3-for-4 with a double and two solo home runs in Sunday's spring game against the Padres.

Moreno was back behind the plate for the first time in two weeks. He dealt with forearm tightness for a stretch and returned to action last Thursday as the designated hitter. Now that Moreno is defending again, it looks like there will be no limitations for the catcher heading into Opening Day. He's batting .242 (6-for-33) with three homers and five RBI through 11 Cactus League contests. He and James McCann will split duties behind the plate, although Moreno could garner additional plate appearances as a DH when not behind the dish.

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Returning to lineup

Moreno (forearm) will start as Arizona's designated hitter and bat fifth in Thursday's Cactus League game against the White Sox.

Moreno has sat out the Diamondbacks' last several spring games while managing forearm tightness, but he's now ready to return to action after a few days of rest. After beginning Cactus League play 5-for-28 at the dish, he will now use the next week to prepare to work as Arizona's primary backstop.

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Looks on track for Opening Day

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo expressed confidence Monday that Moreno (forearm) will be available for the Diamondbacks' March 26 season opener versus the Dodgers, Jose M. Romero of The Arizona Republic reports.

Moreno received good news over the weekend, when an MRI administered on his aching right forearm revealed inflammation but no structural damage. Though the injury isn't expected to affect Moreno at the plate, Lovullo said that the catcher will be barred from throwing this week while he waits for the inflammation to subside. Assuming he's cleared to make a start behind the dish in one of the Diamondbacks' exhibitions versus the Guardians early next week, Moreno should be ready to catch for Opening Day starter Zac Gallen on March 26.
