  • Padres' Bryce Johnson: Making second straight start

Johnson will start in right field and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Reds.

Johnson will cover right field for the second straight game, after he went 0-for-2 with a stolen base -- his fifth of the season -- while starting in Tuesday's 5-3 loss in 11 innings. The 30-year-old isn't expected to be in line for extended playing time, as he'll likely fade into a reserve role as soon as Miguel Andujar moves past his hamstring injury or Jake Cronenworth (concussion) returns from the 7-day injured list.

  • Padres' Bryce Johnson: Key RBI in win

Johnson started in right field and went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a stolen base in Sunday's victory over the Angels.

Johnson drew a rare start, with Fernando Tatis shifting to second base. The former made the most of the opportunity, notching two hits and driving in a key run in the seventh inning to extend the lead to 2-0 in a 2-1 win for the Padres. In 18 plate appearances this season, Johnson owns a .669 OPS and figures to continue seeing limited playing time in a loaded San Diego outfield that regularly features Ramon Laureano, Jackson Merrill and Tatis.

  • Padres' Bryce Johnson: Making third start of the season

Johnson will start in right field and bat eighth in Sunday's game against the Rockies.

Johnson will crack the lineup for just the third time in the Padres' first 16 games, with two of those starts having come against left-handed pitching. The switch-hitting outfielder is a platoon option for the Padres but won't necessarily be a regular presence in the lineup versus lefties while San Diego has most of its key position players available.

  • Padres' Bryce Johnson: Homers off bench Saturday

Johnson hit a two-run home run in his lone at-bat of Saturday's 11-3 win over the Rockies.

Johnson entered the game as a pinch hitter for Fernando Tatis in the eighth inning and delivered the Padres' final runs of the game. Johnson has seen limited playing time since the All-Star break, appearing in just 28 games while going 17-for-40 (.425) with four extra-base hits and six RBI. The outfielder has mostly functioned in a bench role this season -- through 68 plate appearances, he has one homer, eight RBI, seven runs scored, three stolen bases and a .371/.409/.484 slash line.

  • Padres' Bryce Johnson: Sliding into lineup Sunday

Johnson is starting in center field and batting eighth against the Nationals on Sunday.

Johnson wasn't in San Diego's original lineup, but he's now picking up a start in center field, as Jackson Merrill was scratched due to an illness. This will be the third start for Johnson over San Diego's past eight contests, and he's posted a .304/.360/.391 slash line with no homers, two RBI and two steals over 22 games this season.

  • Padres' Bryce Johnson: Set to lose work with Merrill back

Johnson is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Royals.

Johnson had started in three of the last four games for the Padres, but he'll likely be ticketed for a fourth- or fifth-outfielder role after San Diego welcomed Jackson Merrill (concussion) back from the 7-day injured list. Since being called up from Triple-A El Paso on Monday, Johnson has gone 4-for-9 with a double, a stolen base and a run.

  • Padres' Bryce Johnson: Added to roster

The Padres selected Johnson's contract from Triple-A El Paso on Monday.

He will provide more depth in the outfield while Jackson Merrill (concussion) and Jason Heyward (oblique) are on the injured list. Johnson appeared in 47 games with the Padres last season, slashing only .206/.286/.238.

  • Padres' Bryce Johnson: Returns to San Diego

The Padres acquired Johnson and cash considerations from the Pirates on Wednesday in exchange for Brett Sullivan, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.

Johnson got into 47 games as a reserve outfielder for the Padres last season before signing with the Pirates over the winter on a minor-league deal. He'll presumably report to Triple-A El Paso, where he'll provide outfield depth.

  • Pirates' Bryce Johnson: Links up with Pittsburgh as NRI

The Pirates signed Johnson to a minor-league contract Monday that includes an invitation to spring training.

Johnson, 29, is a career .177/.248/.226 hitter over 140 plate appearances across three brief stints in the majors. He will compete for a reserve outfielder job but is likely to be assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis to begin the 2025 season.

  • Bryce Johnson: Becomes free agent

The Padres non-tendered Johnson on Friday.

Johnson appeared in 47 games for the Padres during the regular season, though he only slashed .206/.286/.238 over 73 plate appearances. Now a free agent, he'll look to latch on with another team to provide some organizational outfield depth.
