Player Outlook
Pick a stat, any stat, it doesn't matter. Counting stat, ratio, whatever. It was a personal best for Brent Rooker. His 28.8 percent strikeout rate was still too high and is a concern, since it's rare for a player to repeat a career year. Moving out of the Coliseum and playing in Sutter Health Park, the home field for Triple-A Sacramento River Rats should help assuage regression. After the season, it was reported that Rooker experienced soreness in his right arm for most of the season, ostensibly explaining why Rooker appeared exclusively at DH after only 14 games in the outfield. Rooker is expected to be 100 percent in the spring. He'll start the season with UT-only designation but should pick up outfield eligibility. The initial UT-only status could render a buying opportunity, helping buffer the likely fall off from last season. Rooker inked a five-year, $60 million extension with the Athletics in January, which should put an end to any trade chatter for the foreseeable future.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Hits first homer of season

Rooker went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI in Friday's win over Seattle. He's started the first two games of the season at DH. Rooker didn't play in the outfield last season after May due to a right forearm injury that required surgery in the offseason. He played outfield in spring training and is fully healthy, but the expectation is that he will mostly play DH. His arm injury didn't inhibit him at the plate as he had a career-best 39 home runs, 112 RBI, 82 runs scored and 11 stolen bases while posting a .927 OPS last year.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: In spring lineup Sunday

Rooker (forearm) is batting second as the Athletics' DH in Sunday's Cactus League contest against Colorado. Rooker underwent right forearm extensor surgery last October, but the expectation was always that he'd be healthy by the start of spring training. That appears to be the case given the 30-year-old's presence in the lineup for the Athletics' second game of the exhibition slate. Rooker is slated to bat near the top of the team's order in 2025 after exploding for a career-best 39 home runs, 112 RBI, 82 runs and 11 stolen bases while posting a .927 OPS last year.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Agrees to five-year extension

Rooker (forearm) signed a five-year, $60 million contract extension with the Athletics on Monday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. It was reported earlier in the offseason that the two sides were working together on an extension, and a deal has ultimately been reached to keep the 30-year-old with the A's for the foreseeable future. Rooker put together the best season of his big-league career in 2024, hitting .293 with 39 home runs, 112 RBI and 82 runs scored over 145 games.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Team trying to extend

Athletics manager Mark Kotsay indicated Friday that the club is looking to sign Rooker (forearm) to a contract extension, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Kotsay was talking to reporters about the recent signing of Luis Severino and noted of Rooker that the team is "hopeful to get something done" with the 30-year-old that would show the Athletics are moving in a new direction in regard to "making commitments to players." Rooker is projected to make around $5 million in his first year of arbitration eligibility this offseason and is under team control through 2027. Athletics general manager David Forst said in November that he did not expect to trade Rooker, and the news that the club is looking to extend him instead certainly backs up that line of thinking. Rooker underwent right forearm extensor surgery but is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Undergoes forearm surgery

Athletics general manager David Forst revealed Friday that Rooker underwent right forearm extensor surgery Tuesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Rooker evidently dealt with discomfort in his elbow/forearm for the bulk of the season. It certainly didn't affect his performance at the plate, as he posted a .927 OPS with 39 home runs, but it could be at least part of the reason he didn't start a game in the outfield after May. Rooker is expected to be 100 percent healthy for the start of spring training.

Rooker took Emerson Hancock deep in the fifth inning with Max Schuemann aboard to cut a 3-0 deficit to one run. The round tripper marked Rooker's first time leaving the yard since Sept. 16 and puts him just one shy of reaching the 40-homer mark heading into the final day of the regular season Sunday.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Another productive offensive day

Rooker went 2-for-3 with an RBI infield single, a stolen base and a walk in a win over the Cubs on Wednesday. He was also caught stealing on another attempt. Rooker continued his torrid September run Wednesday with his eighth multi-hit effort in 17 games. The slugger got it done with some small ball in the matinee victory after having belted his 36th and 37th home runs of the season on back-to-back days to begin the week. Rooker's on-base streak now sits at 28 games as well, a stretch that dates back to Aug. 20 and has seen him generate a .357/.421/.634 slash line with 13 extra-base hits and 27 RBI across 126 plate appearances.

The round tripper pushed Rooker's career-best season total to 37 and was his fourth in the last 10 games alone, while the two RBI the big swing generated were his 12th and 13th during that same span.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Keeps rolling in Saturday's loss

Rooker went 3-for-5 with a two-run single and a run in a loss to the White Sox on Saturday. Rooker got it done the small-ball way Saturday, extending his on-base streak to 24 games with his sixth multi-hit effort in 13 September contests. Rooker has just one extra-base hit in his last seven games, but he's been a true Renaissance man with the bat in a breakout 2024 by complementing his 63 XBHs with a career-high 10 steals and career-best 9.5 percent walk rate.

Rooker went 2-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI in Thursday's 6-4 loss to the Mariners. Rooker took Bryan Woo deep in the fifth inning and then Andres Munoz in the ninth but still couldn't lead his team to a win. Rooker also extended his hitting streak to a career-best nine games in the process. The 29-year-old now has 35 home runs this season, surpassing Jose Ramirez for fifth most in the American League. Rooker is seeking to become the first Oakland hitter since 2021 to finish a season top five in the American League homer race.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Reaches 30 homers

Rooker went 3-for-4 with a walk, a double, a home run and three RBI in Saturday's 9-5 loss to the Brewers. His two-run shot in the sixth inning off Colin Rea came when Oakland had already fallen into a 5-1 hole. Rooker has proven that last year's breakout wasn't his ceiling, and while his 30 homers matches his career-high total from last year, the 29-year-old's 87 RBI and .935 OPS blow away his 2023 production.

Rooker went 2-for-5 in the Athletics' extra-inning loss to the Giants on Sunday. The veteran outfielder is in the stretch run of what has turned out to be a career season, as he's already boasting a career-high 83 RBI and is just one home run away from equaling the 30 he belted in 2023. Rooker's .942 OPS is also far and away the highest of his major-league tenure when factoring out his initial seven-game cameo with the Twins back in 2020.
