  • Nationals' Ty Tice: Inks minors deal with Nats

Tice signed a minor-league contract with the Nationals on Monday.

Tice struggled to a 6.37 ERA and 1.88 WHIP in 53.2 innings last season between Atlanta's Double-A and Triple-A affiliates, though he struck out 83 batters along the way. The 27-year-old right-hander will function as organizational relief depth for Washington in 2024.

  • Diamondbacks' Ty Tice: Removed from 40-man roster

The Diamondbacks outrighted Tice to Triple-A Reno on Thursday.

Tice has struggled in four games with Reno since been claimed July 21, allowing eight runs and walking six batters in just 2.1 innings of work. The move keeps him with Arizona's Triple-A club for now, but he's unlikely to sniff the major-league roster unless he has a huge turnaround.

  • Diamondbacks' Ty Tice: Finds new organization

Arizona claimed Tice off waivers from Atlanta on Wednesday and optioned him to Triple-A Reno.

The 25-year-old right-hander reached the majors for the first time this season, appearing in five games between Toronto and Atlanta. The latter organization kept him around for about two months before electing to boot him off the 40-man roster, but Arizona evidently recognized enough potential in him to put in a waiver claim. Expect Tice to get a look in the big leagues with Arizona at some point later in 2021 if he can first string together a few quality relief appearances at Reno.

The right-hander was promoted to the big-league roster last weekend and delivered a scoreless frame with a walk and a hit during his lone appearance. Tice could rejoin Atlanta later in the year but will pitch at Gwinnett for now.

The right-hander appeared in four games with Triple-A Gwinnett and posted a 2.08 ERA and 0.49 WHIP in 4.1 innings. He should serve mainly as a low-leverage reliever for Atlanta going forward.

Tice was recalled by the Blue Jays on Friday, Mike Wilner of the Toronto Star reports.

Tice posted a 2.25 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 60 innings in the minors in 2019, but he should mainly pitch in low-leverage situations to begin his time in the majors.
