  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Building up at multiple positions

Arias (hamstring) will play multiple positions while on a rehab assignment, MLB.com reports. Arias began his rehab at Triple-A Columbus on Thursday, when he played five innings at shortstop. Prior to his injury in early April, Arias was the starting shortstop, but these rehab plans indicate a different role when he returns. "We just want to have Gabby prepared for whatever the situation/role is," Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said Friday. During his five seasons in the majors, Arias has played all four infield positions along with limited exposure to all three outfield spots.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Opens rehab assignment

Arias (hamstring) started at shortstop and went 0-for-1 with a walk for Triple-A Columbus on Thursday. Arias opened a rehab assignment with the Clippers and played five innings in the field before taking a seat for the final four frames. He's been out since early April, which suggests he'll use up most of the allotted 20 days for position players on a rehab assignment. Given the performances of Brayan Rocchio at shortstop and Travis Bazzana at second base, Arias may have to settle for a utility role once he's ready.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Closing in on rehab assignment

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said Saturday that Arias (hamstring) is getting "closer" to a rehab assignment, MLB.com reports. Arias recently began baseball activities and hitting in cages following a brief pause in his rehab activity. Since he landed on the injured list in early April, Cleveland's middle infield has evolved into a tandem of Travis Bazzana at second base and Brayan Rocchio at shortstop. That leaves an infield utility role for Arias when he's ready to return; however, Daniel Schneemann can fill that same role.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Transferred to 60-day IL

The Guardians transferred Arias (hamstring) to the 60-day injured list Friday, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports. The move opens up a 40-man roster spot for Stuart Fairchild, who had his contract selected from Triple-A Columbus in a corresponding move. Arias has been sidelined since April 6 due to a hamstring strain that he aggravated last week, but he has been able to resume baseball activities and could still rejoin the Guardians some time in June.

  • Guardians' Juan Brito: Snaps slide

Brito went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Sunday's 8-4 win over the Orioles. Brito contributed a two-run double to the Guardians' four-run fourth inning. The hit snapped an 0-for-13 slide and his first extra-base hit and RBI since April 8. He's getting regular playing time while Gabriel Arias (hamstring) in on the injured list, but a slash line of .184/.244/263 leaves Brito vulnerable. Daniel Schneemann (.890 OPS) lurks on the 26-man roster, and elite prospect Travis Bazzana is heating up -- .414/.485/.759 in last seven games -- at Triple-A Columbus after a slow start. Brito's also made three errors since arriving in Cleveland, which could prompt a move to replace him.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Headed for MRI

Arias (hamstring) will undergo an MRI on Tuesday, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports. Arias pulled up gingerly in the fifth inning Monday on his way to a double and was removed from the game. He's unlikely to play in Tuesday's game, which was moved up from a scheduled 6:10 pm start to 1:10 pm due to frigid nighttime weather forecasted for Cleveland. Following Monday's exit, Daniel Schneemann pinch ran for Arias, while Brayan Rocchio replaced him at shortstop.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Nursing hamstring issue

Arias was removed from Monday's game against Kansas City due to left hamstring tightness, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports. It's unclear at this time whether Arias will require a stint on the injured list. The Guardians will presumably send their starting shortstop for further testing before providing an update on his availability for Tuesday and beyond.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Exits early Monday

Arias left Monday's game against the Royals due to an apparent left leg injury, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports. Arias appeared to suffer the injury during the fifth inning on a double, and he was promptly removed from the matchup. He can be considered day-to-day until the team has more information on the severity of his injury.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Delivers two runs

Arias went 2-for-4 with two RBI in Sunday's 6-5 win over the Cubs in the second game of a doubleheader. He went 0-for-3 in the matinee. Arias had RBI knocks in the sixth and eighth innings to help Cleveland gain a split of the doubleheader. His bat has come alive of late. After recording one hit over his first 18 at-bats, the shortstop is 4-for-12 with a walk, two home runs and four RBI over the last four games.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Leaves yard in win

Arias went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 4-1 win over the Dodgers. Arias has had a slow start to the season, but he was able to take Yoshinobu Yamamoto deep in the third inning Wednesday for his first extra-base hit of the year. Arias has racked up nine strikeouts and just one walk over 20 plate appearances so far, which contributes to him hitting a meager .105 (2-for-19). Despite the struggles, he's holding down a regular role at shortstop for now, but he will need to do better with the bat to maintain his playing time.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Returns to Guardians lineup

Arias (back) will start at shortstop and bat eighth in Friday's Cactus League contest versus the Angels. Arias missed the past week of action with lower-back spasms, but he's ready to go now. The 26-year-old has gone 2-for-9 with a double and is projected to be the Guardians' primary shortstop during the upcoming season.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Double, run in return

Arias went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored in Friday's 4-0 win over the White Sox. Arias doubled and scored the Guardians' third run. He returned from a three-game absence due to inflammation in his right wrist and was back at shortstop. Arias may have his job back, but he hasn't provided lot of offense, slashing .164/.215/.230 with three RBI over the last 20 games.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Returns to Cleveland lineup

Arias (wrist) will start at shortstop and bat sixth in Friday's game versus the White Sox. Arias was forced to miss the last three contests with right wrist inflammation, but he's feeling well enough to give it a go in Friday's series opener. With Arias at shortstop, Brayan Rocchio will shift back to second base for the Guardians.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Not starting Thursday

Arias (wrist) isn't in the lineup for Thursday's game versus Kansas City. Arias is expected to play through his wrist injury to help the Guardians push for a spot in the postseason, but not before he misses a third consecutive start Thursday. Brayan Rocchio will fill in at shortstop in Arias' absence, putting Daniel Schneemann at second base and opening a spot in the lineup for George Valera to serve as Cleveland's designated hitter.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Sitting again Wednesday

Arias (wrist) remains out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Royals. Arias will miss a second straight start after departing Monday's 10-2 win due to right wrist inflammation. He is considered day-to-day. Brayan Rocchio will again shift over to shortstop, and Daniel Schneemann will handle second base for the Guardians.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Exits early Monday

Arias (undisclosed) exited Monday's contest against the Royals in the sixth inning, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports. Arias struck out to end the fourth inning, ultimately prompting manager Stephen Vogt to come check on him. The infielder remained in the game for the fifth inning, but he did end up leaving the contest prior to the sixth. It's unclear what Arias is dealing with, and more information on his status will likely come in the near future. Angel Martinez replaced Arias in the field for the time being, batting seventh versus Kansas City.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Homers in return

Arias started at shortstop and went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 8-1 win over the Red Sox. Arias, who missed four consecutive games with a hand injury, clubbed a home run in his first plate appearance, which kicked off Cleveland's six-run second inning. The homer was the 10th of the season for Arias, who needs one more to establish a new career high in that category. He is expected to remain the primary shortstop for now, but a .202/.250/.374 slash line in the second half may leave his hold on the job shaky.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Rejoining starting nine

Arias (hand) will start at shortstop and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Red Sox. Arias will check back into the starting nine after a right hand contusion relegated him to the bench for each of the previous four contests. With Arias back in the fold, Brayan Rocchio will shift over to the keystone and Angel Martinez will move to center field after starting at second base in Tuesday's 11-7 loss.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Held out again Tuesday

Arias (hand) remains out of the lineup for Tuesday's game in Boston. The expectation had been that Arias would return to action Tuesday, but instead he will miss a fourth straight start with a right hand contusion. Brayan Rocchio will again handle shortstop, while Angel Martinez will step in at second base.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Not in lineup after Friday's HBP

Arias (wrist) isn't starting against Seattle on Saturday. Arias was hit on the right wrist by a pitch during Friday's contest and had to leave the game. He took X-rays that came back negative, but the versatile IF/OF will nonetheless begin on the bench Saturday. Brayan Rocchio is starting at shortstop in his stead.
