Giants' Will Brennan: Pushed off 40-man roster
The Giants designated Brennan for assignment Wednesday.
Brennan will give up his spot on the 40-man roster to left-hander Reiver Sanmartin (hip), who was reinstated from the 60-day injured list. The 28-year-old Brennan had produced a healthy .869 OPS over 117 plate appearances at Triple-A Sacramento in 2026, but he's had far less success over parts of five major-league seasons between stops with the Guardians and Giants, slashing just .263/.301/.365 (86 wRC+).

Giants' Will Brennan: Demoted to Triple-A
The Giants optioned Brennan to Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday.
Just one day after being called up to the big club, Brennan will wind up heading back to Sacramento. The Giants weren't eager to give him a regular run of at-bats in the outfield, and the left-handed-hitting Brennan wouldn't have offered much value in a bench role since he couldn't be platooned with either Drew Gilbert or Jung Hoo Lee. Brennan was swapped off the 26-man active roster in favor of Jonah Cox, who was called up from Double-A Richmond and should be a more useful bench piece due to his right-handedness and ability to play all three outfield spots.

Giants' Will Brennan: Back in big leagues
The Giants recalled Brennan from Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday.
After being sent to Triple-A on Friday, Brennan will turn right back around and rejoin the active roster as an injury replacement for Harrison Bader (foot). Brennan has gone just 2-for-23 at the plate in the majors this season and will likely work primarily as an outfield depth piece.

With Heliot Ramos (quad) landing on the injured list Saturday, Brennan will come up from Triple-A to fill the void in San Francisco's outfield unit. The 28-year-old has gone 0-for-9 at the plate in the big leagues so far this year but is slashing .341/.374/.451 through 92 plate appearances at Sacramento.

The Giants needed space on the roster after recalling both Jesus Rodriguez and Bryce Eldridge from Triple-A, resulting in Brennan going down to the minors and Jerar Encarnacion being designated for assignment in corresponding moves. Brennan appeared in just five games for the Giants since being recalled in mid-April and went 0-for-9 with two strikeouts across those outings. He'll get more reps in Triple-A, where he is slashing .400/.396/.560 with one home run and 10 RBI in 54 plate appearances.

Brennan's .325/.386/.500 slash line through 44 plate appearances in the Cactus League made a strong case for him to break camp with the big club, but he'll ultimately head back to the minors to begin the year. The 28-year-old outfielder has routinely batted above .300 at the Triple-A level and could earn a spot on the Giants' bench if he continues to swing a hot bat.

Giants' Will Brennan: Logs RBI in spring loss
Brennan started at center field and went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 8-7 Cactus League loss to the Diamondbacks.
After reaching base on a fielder's choice in the second inning and coming around to score, Brennan added an RBI single in the third but was caught trying to steal second. Through 15 Cactus League outings, he's recorded eight runs scored, six RBI and four home runs while slashing .379/.455/.483 across 33 plate appearances. Following an injury-riddled 2025 campaign in which he underwent Tommy John surgery in June and sports hernia surgery in September, the 28-year-old outfielder signed a major-league deal with San Francisco in mid-February. The left-handed hitter is expected to operate as the Giants' fourth outfielder this season.

Giants' Will Brennan: Joins San Francisco
Brennen (elbow) agreed to a one-year, major-league contract with the Giants on Sunday, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
The 28-year-old was limited to 159 plate appearances between Triple-A and the majors last season with the Guardians, as he underwent Tommy John surgery in June and then required sports hernia surgery in September. A healthy Brennan should serve as a fourth outfielder for the Giants.

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said Saturday that Brennan will get a second opinion on his left forearm next week, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.
Brennan landed on the 10-day injured list May 22 due to left forearm inflammation. He'll visit Dr. Keith Meister next week, which indicates that Brennan's injury is more severe than initially thought. Brennan was recalled by the Guardians from Triple-A Columbus on May 12 and went 1-for-11 in six major-league outings prior to his injury.

The Guardians recalled Brennan from Triple-A Columbus on Monday.
Brennan spent nearly all of the previous two seasons in the majors, but this is his first promotion in 2025 from Columbus, where he's slashed .304/.340/.419 with three homers in 35 games this season. Cleveland has received very little production from Nolan Jones and Jhonkensy Noel in right field, so it's possible Brennan will get some run at that position. Brennan is starting in right field and batting ninth Monday versus the Brewers. However, with a career .270/.308/.377 batting line at the big-league level, Brennan is hardly a good bet to produce if he does get an opportunity.
