Termarr Johnson won't make good on some of the ridiculous comps scouts were putting on his hit tool as an amateur before the 2022 draft, but he's still tracking towards being a bat-first everyday second baseman. He got off to a slow start in a return to High-A as a 20-year-old, but from mid-May on, he slashed .260/.364/.437 with 14 home runs, 18 steals and a 20.4 percent strikeout rate in 90 games, including 14 games at Double-A to close the year. Johnson also slashed .250/.444/.475 with three steals and more walks (14) than strikeouts (11) in 11 Arizona Fall League games. He still saw 40 starts at shortstop in 2024, but he played the majority of his games in all three leagues at second base, which is a better fit for his fringe-average arm. An opportunistic base stealer with a career .390 OBP, Johnson is a better prospect in dynasty leagues that use OBP instead of batting average. He hits most of his home runs to the pull side, and it's possible he could be a 25-homer/15-steal second baseman in a couple years.

    Johnson (foot) has played in two of Double-A Altoona's first three games of the season, going 2-for-8 with a double, a walk, a stolen base and a run. Johnson's availability for the start of the minor-league season appeared to be in some question after he was unable to play in the Pirates' March 14 Spring Breakout game due to a bone bruise in his left foot, but he was evidently able to move past the issue a few weeks later. One of the top prospects in Pittsburgh's system, the 20-year-old Johnson is coming off a 2024 season in which he posted a .752 OPS with 15 home runs and 22 stolen bases over 124 games between Altoona and High-A Greensboro.

After suffering a right foot injury in an Oct. 9 game in the Arizona Fall League, Johnson was limited to just 11 games for the Scottsdale Scorpions and slashed .250/.444/.475 with a home run and three stolen bases. The injury doesn't appear to be anything that is limiting him early on during the spring, and though he's attending big-league camp with the Pirates, Johnson will likely be headed to Double-A Altoona to begin the 2025 season. The 20-year-old infielder remains one of Pittsburgh's top prospects and could make a push for his big-league debut later in the season if he continues to maintain high walk rates while putting his power and speed on display in the upper levels of the minors.

Johnson was touted by some evaluators as the best prep hitter since Joe Mauer or Ken Griffey Jr. when he was drafted fourth overall in 2022, so it's a bit jarring to see his career average sitting at .227. His career OBP is .409, and that's the area of his game he has leaned into thus far, as he is swinging less than 45 percent of the time and making contact less than 65 percent of the time. Once his luck on balls in play (.242 BABIP) stabilizes, his season line should look a bit better, but it's certainly been a disappointing return trip to the Sally League for Johnson, who turns 20 in June.
