Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Option to pitch Sunday
Manager Dave Roberts didn't rule out the possibility of Ohtani (knee) pitching Sunday against the Tigers, depending how things go the next few days, Maddie Lee of the Los Angeles Times reports.
The skipper indicated Sunday that Ohtani could pitch in a game as early as this week, and it appears the two-way star is in play to close out the three-game series in Detroit. The right-hander threw 30 pitches in a session of live batting practice Saturday and will have one more mound session this week. If that goes well, Ohtani could make his first appearance on the bump for the Dodgers since early July. He would likely have a limited workload early on, which would give Eric Lauer a chance to work in a piggyback role.

Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Could pitch next week
Manager Dave Roberts said Sunday that Ohtani (knee) could pitch in a game as early as next week, Dylan Hernandez of the California Post reports.
The right-hander threw 30 pitches in a live batting practice session Saturday, and he'll have one more bullpen session or live batting practice session on the schedule during the Dodgers' upcoming series in Atlanta before a decision is made whether he's ready for game action, per Katie Woo of The Athletic. Ohtani -- who hasn't pitched for the Dodgers since July 3 due to knee issues and a right biceps injury -- was in the midst of a dominant campaign on the mound with a 1.79 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 95:26 K:BB across 85.2 innings. He's continued to be a force at the plate with a .935 OPS through 20 games in August and is batting leadoff, as usual, in Sunday's series finale with the Pirates.

Ohtani (knee) threw a 30-pitch live batting practice session Saturday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
For the first time since making his last appearance as a pitcher July 3, Ohtani faced off against hitters in what marked a major milestone in his recovery from a lingering left knee issue and a more minor triceps injury. Manager Dave Roberts said afterward that Ohtani will likely need to throw one more live BP before getting cleared to pitch in games, but the two-way superstar doesn't seem to be too far away from doing so. Once he's eventually ready to start as a pitcher, Ohtani will likely be operating with a restricted workload and could need to be piggybacked.

Ohtani threw another bullpen following his last session Friday. Ohtani has reached the 30-homer mark for the sixth year in a row, though he's still well off the pace that saw him club more than 50 homers in each of the previous two seasons. The superstar has made his presence felt with four homers and nine RBI over his last nine contests. He's batting .294 with a .948 OPS this season, to go with 80 RBI, 82 runs scored, 24 doubles, three triples and seven stolen bases. Ohtani also threw a bullpen session Tuesday as he continues to work his way back from knee issues that have kept him off the mound in game action since July 3.

Ohtani went 4-for-5 with two homers, three total RBI and four total runs scored in Monday's 11-5 win over the Rockies.
Ohtani blasted off twice, crushing a solo homer off Tomoyuki Sugano in the fifth inning before taking Juan Mejia deep for a two-run shot in the sixth frame. It was a big offensive performance for the two-way star, who's slashing .317/.377/.619 with five homers, 11 RBI, 11 runs and a stolen base through 16 games in August. Overall, Ohtani is hitting .295/.392/.556 with 29 homers, 78 RBI, 81 runs and seven stolen bases across 120 contests.

Ohtani stated Monday that his knee felt healthy following Friday's bullpen session, and he's optimistic that the injury is a thing of the past. It's Ohtani's first bullpen session in over three weeks, a positive step in his throwing progression as he continues to work through a knee injury as well as a right biceps issue. He hasn't pitched since July 3, but Ohtani could be available to pitch toward the tail end of the regular season and in the playoffs. The injuries haven't prevented Ohtani from serving as the Dodgers' designated hitter, and he's gone 14-for-47 (.298) with one steal, three home runs and seven RBI across 12 games in August.

Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Snaps steal-less stretch
Ohtani went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs, an RBI and a stolen base in a 6-5 win against Kansas City on Monday.
Ohtani drove in the Dodgers' first run with a double in the third inning and scored the game-winning run on a Freddie Freeman single in the seventh. Still, the most notable stat of the game for the two-way star was his stolen base, which ended a 67-game span without a theft. Ohtani attempted just three steals during the drought, so he hasn't been very active on the basepaths despite reaching base at a .405 clip during the steal-less stretch. It was only two seasons ago that Ohtani logged a career-best 59 steals, but it's not all that surprising that he's become less of a speed threat given that he's battled a knee injury for the past couple months and has also had to focus much of his attention on pitching when healthy enough to do so.
