Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Called up in advance of start
The Giants recalled Whisenhunt from Triple-A Sacramento ahead of his scheduled start Sunday versus the Angels in San Francisco.
Whisenhunt will be entering the rotation in place of Trevor McDonald (elbow), who could be facing a long-term absence after he was diagnosed Friday with a UCL sprain. The Giants previously called Whisenhunt up for spot starts June 17 and July 9, but the southpaw has otherwise spent the entire season in the Triple-A rotation. Over 82.1 innings in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, Whisenhunt has submitted a 4.15 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 90:38 K:BB across 82.1 innings.

Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Hurt by homers in first loss
Whisenhunt (2-1) took the loss Sunday, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks over five innings against the Angels. He struck out seven.
Whisenhunt showed off his swing-and-miss stuff by registering 18 whiffs and seven strikeouts, but the southpaw was tagged for a pair of homers in the fourth inning that soured the outing and saddled him with the loss. The 25-year-old has spent most of the season with Triple-A Sacramento, as Sunday marked his third big-league start of the season, and he owns a 4.60 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 13:8 K:BB across 15.2 innings with San Francisco. With Trevor McDonald (elbow) likely to miss an extended period of time, Whisenhunt figures to stick around in the rotation for the time being, with his next start tentatively scheduled for Friday at San Diego.

Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Set to start Sunday
The Giants are expected to recall Whisenhunt from Triple-A Sacramento to start Sunday's home game against the Angels, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
With Trevor McDonald (elbow) recently landing on the injured list, the Giants will turn to Whisenhunt to fill the fifth spot in their rotation. The 25-year-old southpaw has given up four runs in 10.2 innings across his first two MLB starts this season, and he'll draw a favorable matchup on paper Sunday against an Angels lineup that's logged just a .656 OPS since the beginning of July.

Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Relegated to Sacramento
The Giants optioned Whisenhunt to Triple-A Sacramento on Friday.
Whisenhunt gave up two runs in 5.2 innings during his spot start against Colorado on Thursday, but he'll now return to the minors in order to make room for Keaton Winn's (elbow) return from the injured list. Whisenhunt now owns a 3.38 ERA and 1.41 WHIP through 10.2 frames in the majors this season, and he could be an option to return to San Francisco later in the year if the big club's rotation depth is tested.

Whisenhunt threw 57 of 87 pitches for strikes. Both runs against him came on a Willi Castro home run in the fourth inning. Whisenhunt has impressed in his two major-league outings this season, winning both while allowing four runs over 10.2 innings, though his 6:6 K:BB would be a limiting factor if he gets a longer look with the big club. Whisenhunt joined the Giants' taxi squad Wednesday and could be formally recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to start Thursday's game against the Rockies in San Francisco, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Per Tristi Rodriguez of NBC Sports Bay Area, manager Tony Vitello wouldn't fully commit to Whisenhunt joining the big-league rotation, but the skipper acknowledged that the southpaw is a candidate to make a start before the All-Star break. The Giants are currently listing Thursday's series opener as "TBA," so Whisenhunt would be a logical choice to slot into that spot while Robbie Ray, Tyler Mahle and Trevor McDonald all get pushed back a day in the schedule. Whisenhunt made his lone start of the season with the Giants back on June 17 in Atlanta, striking out two batters while allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over five innings. Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Could make 2026 debut Monday
Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle relays that Whisenhunt could be called up from Triple-A Sacramento and start in the Giants' series opener against the Padres on Monday.
Whisenhunt was unable to crack the Giants' Opening Day roster after struggling with his command and control during spring training. He hasn't exactly been much better in Triple-A, posting a 4.85 ERA and 1.46 WHIP over 26 innings. However, he pitched well in his last start against Salt Lake on Tuesday, when he allowed one run on three hits while striking out eight across six innings without issuing a walk. Whisenhunt appeared in five major-league games for the Giants in 2025 and finished the season 2-1 with a 5.01 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 16:12 K:BB across 23.1 frames.
