Rodriguez began a rehab assignment at Triple-A on Sunday, but the Giants paused his assignment after one game due to the setback. He's scheduled to see a specialist within the next few days, and a clearer picture of his return timeline should emerge following his doctor's visit. In the meantime, Drew Cavanaugh and Andrew Knizner will continue to split reps behind the plate for the Giants.

Rodriguez has been on the 10-day injured list since Aug. 1 due to right elbow neuritis, and he's ready to take the next step in his recovery program by playing in minor-league games. Per Pavlovic, the plan for Rodriguez is to see more work as an infielder once he's cleared to return from the IL.

The Giants recalled Rodriguez from Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday.
He'll be up in the big leagues for the second time this season, joining the Giants' active roster as a replacement for outfielder Jonah Cox (oblique), who was placed on the 10-day injured list. Between his time in the majors and minors this season, Rodriguez as seen action at catcher, second base, third base, left field and right field, so he'll provide the Giants with some versatility off the bench. Though Rodriguez fared respectably as a hitter with a .687 OPS in 43 plate appearances during his stint in the majors earlier in 2026, he's not regarded as anything more than an adequate defender behind the plate. As such, it's unclear if the Giants intend to give Rodriguez an extended look at catcher over the likes of Drew Cavanaugh and Eric Haase while Daniel Susac (back) is on the shelf.

Rodriguez split time last season between High-A and Double-A ball, turning in a .302/.375/.481 slash line between the two levels. Now that he's on the 40-man roster, he won't have to worry about being picked up by another organization in the Rule 5 Draft, but the 22-year-old backstop is likely to begin the 2025 campaign with Double-A Somerset.
