Padres' Samad Taylor: On bench for series opener
Taylor is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cardinals.
Taylor will retreat to the bench after he had started in left field in each of the Padres' last seven games while going 10-for-26 (.385 average) with a home run, three walks, two stolen bases, eight RBI and five runs during that stretch. Gavin Sheets will get the nod in left field Monday, but Taylor should have a fairly clear path to an everyday role so long as he remains productive at the plate.

Padres' Samad Taylor: Pops first career homer
Taylor went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI in Saturday's 9-3 win over the Orioles.
Getting his sixth straight start in left field and batting sixth, Taylor took Trey Gibson deep in the first inning for a two-run shot before adding an RBI single in the fifth. While the long ball was his first in the majors in his 45th game, Taylor has hit safely in all six of those starts, batting .409 (9-for-22) during that hot streak with a double, two steals, four runs and eight RBI. With Miguel Andujar (hamstring) having joined Ramon Laureano (hip) on the IL, the door is open for the 27-year-old Taylor to lock down a starting spot in a big-league outfield for the first time since he made his debut with the Royals in 2023. He has little left to prove in the minors -- over 188 Triple-A games the last two seasons between El Paso and Tacoma in the Mariners' system, Taylor is batting .302 with 24 home runs and 53 stolen bases in 64 attempts.

Padres' Samad Taylor: Reaches base three times
Taylor went 2-for-4 with a walk, one RBI and a stolen base in Tuesday's 5-3 extra-innings loss to the Reds.
Taylor has picked up a steal in each of the last two games. The outfielder was originally brought up to provide depth after the Padres designated Nick Castellanos for assignment last Wednesday. Taylor has now started three straight games in left field, including two against right-handed pitchers. If Taylor can continue to hit, it will likely lead to him competing for playing time with Gavin Sheets and Miguel Andujar (hamstring), though Taylor will probably settle into a platoon role at best in the long run.

Padres' Samad Taylor: Key contributor in win
Taylor went 2-for-4 with three RBI, a run scored and a stolen base in Monday's win over Cincinnati.
Taylor came through in the late stages of Monday's win, giving San Diego the lead on an RBI bunt single in the seventh inning before depositing a two-RBI single into left field in the eighth frame to extend the lead. The 27-year-old was called up Wednesday from Triple-A El Paso and hasn't found much success in prior major-league opportunities, but he could receive some looks in left field due to Ramon Laureano (hip) being expected to miss the remainder of the season.

The Padres selected Taylor's contract from Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday.
Taylor was elevated to the big-league club after slashing .319/.406/.500 with the Triple-A squad. Padres' Samad Taylor: Fails to win roster spot
The Padres reassigned Taylor to minor-league camp Tuesday.
The 27-year-old is expected to open the season at Triple-A El Paso after failing to win a utility spot with the Padres coming out of spring training. Taylor owns a .205/.272/.260 slash line over 83 career plate appearances in the big leagues across the past three seasons.

Padres' Samad Taylor: Finds work with Padres
Taylor signed a minor-league contract with the Padres on Saturday that includes an invitation to spring training, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Taylor elected free agency Friday after being outrighted by the Mariners, and he'll now attempt to carve out a role for himself with the Padres. The 27-year-old carries just a .532 OPS through 83 career plate appearances in the majors, but he slashed .296/.378/.461 with 86 RBI, 124 runs scored and 44 steals over 137 games at Triple-A Tacoma in 2025.

Samad Taylor: Becomes free agent
Taylor elected to become a free agent Friday.
Taylor cleared waivers after being removed from the Mariners' 40-man roster, but he's decided to test out free agency rather than accepting an outright assignment to remain in the organization. The 27-year-old went 1-for-8 in four games for Seattle in 2025 and slashed .296/.378/.461 with 17 homers and 44 steals at Triple-A Tacoma. Taylor can handle every position other than catcher, first base and pitcher, so he shouldn't have trouble landing a contract elsewhere.

Taylor lost his spot on the 40-man roster las week and has since cleared waivers. He'll likely enter spring training with the team and could have the chance to regain his role with a strong showing, but he also has the option of electing free agency.

Mariners' Samad Taylor: Loses rosters spot
Taylor was designated for assignment by the Mariners on Thursday.
The Mariners acquired Yosver Zulueta from the Reds on Thursday, which created a need for a spot on the 40-man roster, and Taylor became the odd man out. The 27-year-old has primarily been stuck at Triple-A for the last four seasons, though he has picked up 83 plate appearances in the majors in that span.

Mariners' Samad Taylor: Returns to Triple-A
The Mariners optioned Taylor to Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday.
The 26-year-old had his contract selected from Tacoma last Tuesday, and he went 1-for-8 with a run in four games during his week in the majors. Taylor is returning to Triple-A since Dylan Moore (hip) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list.

Mariners' Samad Taylor: Promoted to big club
The Mariners selected Taylor's contract from Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday.
In order to add Taylor to the 40-man roster, the Mariners transferred right-hander Gregory Santos (knee) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL. Taylor will take over the 26-man active roster spot of infielder/outfielder Dylan Moore (hip), who was placed on the 10-day injured list. Taylor has appeared in 34 career games in the big leagues, slashing .215/.288/.277 with no home runs, four RBI and eight stolen bases.

Mariners' Samad Taylor: Returns to Triple-A
Taylor was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Monday.
The 25-year-old was promoted Friday with Ty France headed to the paternity list, and Taylor will return to Tacoma with France now back with the team. Taylor appeared in all three games in Milwaukee and went 2-for-5 with two runs and a strikeout.

Mariners' Samad Taylor: Sees immediate action Friday
Taylor, recalled from Triple-A Tacoma earlier in the day, entered Friday's loss to the Brewers as a pinch hitter in the sixth inning and remained in the game in left field. He went 1-for-2 with a run.
Taylor couldn't deliver in his pinch-hit at-bat, grounding out to first with two men on and the score knotted at 3-3. However, the speedy 25-year-old laced a single to center field in the ninth inning to help ignite a rally that fell just short. Friday's game marked Taylor's Mariners regular-season debut, and with the team in need of some offensive punch, there's a possibility his stay with the big-league club can extend beyond Ty France's paternity leave.

Mariners' Samad Taylor: Recalled from Triple-A
Taylor was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma by the Mariners on Friday, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports.
The 25-year-old could be up just for the weekend while Ty France is on paternity leave. Taylor has experience at every position other than first base, catcher and pitcher.

Mariners' Samad Taylor: Optioned to Tacoma
The Mariners optioned Taylor to Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
After struggling with the Royals last season, Taylor was able to put together a solid spring, slashing .273/.342/.485 with two homers and six RBI across 38 plate appearances. If Taylor is able to keep his bat hot as he moves to Tacoma, he could return to Seattle this summer as a utility player.

Mariners' Samad Taylor: Solid spring continues Sunday
Taylor went 1-for-2 with a double, a stolen base and two runs in a Cactus League loss to the Diamondbacks on Sunday.
Taylor pushed his spring average to .286, a solid figure that's accompanied by Sunday's double, two home runs, four RBI, three steals and seven runs. The 25-year-old, a late-January trade acquisition, brings an eclectic skill set that includes some outstanding speed, and he seemingly doesn't have anything left to prove at the Triple-A level after slashing .282/.384/.448 with a 13.5 percent walk rate and modest 21.2 percent strikeout rate across 694 plate appearances there the last two seasons. However, Taylor doesn't make the projected Opening Day roster of Daniel Kramer of MLB.com, implying he could well begin the season at Triple-A Tacoma.
