  • Twins' Cole Irvin: Claimed by Minnesota

The Twins claimed Irvin off waivers from the Orioles on Monday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. Irvin remained in the Baltimore organization after being designated for assignment back in late July, but he did not pass through waivers this time around. The left-hander offers the Twins the versatility to be used as a starter or reliever, but he'll probably be bound for the bullpen after having not started a game since August. Irvin will officially join the Twins' 28-man active roster Tuesday.

  • Orioles' Cole Irvin: Pushed off 40-man roster

The Orioles designated Irvin for assignment Sunday. Baltimore has now DFA'd Irvin for the second time this season. The Orioles previously made the transaction in late July, with the lefty ultimately clearing waivers and sticking around in the organization. He received the call back to Baltimore on Aug. 20, and Irvin made four appearances (two starts) during his latest stint in the majors while logging a 4.97 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 10:4 K:BB in 12.2 innings. Right-hander Jacob Webb (elbow) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list to take Irvin's spot in the bullpen and on the 28-man active roster.

  • Orioles' Cole Irvin: Grabs three-inning save

Irvin allowed a run on two hits and struck out two without walking a batter over three innings to earn the save in Monday's 13-3 win over the White Sox. Irvin started last Tuesday, going 4.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers. Zach Eflin's return from a shoulder injury may have taken Irvin out of the rotation for now, but it's possible the 30-year-old southpaw gets a start this weekend against the Rays if Dean Kremer (forearm) isn't ready to go. Operating as a swingman in 2024, Irvin has a 4.74 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 73:25 K:BB over 106.1 innings while adding a 6-5 record, one save and one hold over 24 appearances (16 starts).

  • Orioles' Cole Irvin: Making another start

Irvin is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. The Orioles called Irvin up from Triple-A Norfolk last Wednesday to make his first start with the big club since June 30. Injuries have hit the Baltimore rotation hard recently, which has resulted in Irvin getting his third trial in a starting role despite the fact that he has produced an 8.80 ERA in 30.2 innings over his last nine outings in the majors. He'll be at risk of moving to the bullpen -- if not being removed from the 40-man roster -- as soon as Zach Eflin (shoulder) and/or Grayson Rodriguez (lat) return from the injured list.

  • Orioles' Cole Irvin: Goes 4.1 innings vs. Mets

Irvin didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 4-3 loss to the Mets, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out two. Making his first appearance in the majors since July 29, Irvin didn't necessarily pitch poorly, allowing just a home run to Francisco Lindor in the third inning before New York scraped across a second run in the fifth. Irvin was ultimately removed in the fifth inning after throwing 83 pitches. Overall, the left-hander is 6-5 on the season with a 4.82 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 68:23 K:BB across 99 innings. While Irvin may head back to Triple-A, he will likely be needed again down the stretch as the Orioles deal with numerous injuries in their rotation.

  • Orioles' Cole Irvin: Added to roster ahead of start

The Orioles selected Irvin's contract from Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Irvin will draw a spot start Wednesday against the Mets, filling in for the injured Zach Eflin (shoulder). The lefty seems poised to be sent back down to Triple-A after the outing, although it's possible he could change minds if he pitches well. Irvin has posted a 4.06 ERA and 1.34 WHIP through 75.1 frames with the Orioles this season.

  • Orioles' Cole Irvin: Starting Wednesday

The Orioles will select Irvin's contract from Triple-A Norfolk to start Wednesday's game against the Mets, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports. Since being sent outright to Norfolk on Aug. 2, Irvin has allowed three earned runs over 6.2 innings, and he'll now be brought back onto the big-league roster to make a spot start. In 14 starts with the Orioles, the 30-year-old lefty has posted a 4.06 ERA and 1.34 WHIP through 75.1 frames. He will most likely be sent back to Triple-A following his outing Wednesday.

  • Orioles' Cole Irvin: Outrighted to Norfolk

Irvin cleared waivers Friday and was sent outright to Triple-A Norfolk, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. Irvin will officially remain within the Orioles organization after being designated for assignment Tuesday. The 30-year-old southpaw allowed 17 runs in 19.1 innings after being moved to the MLB bullpen, though he may reclaim a starting role now that he's in Triple-A.

  • Orioles' Cole Irvin: DFA'd by Baltimore

The Orioles designated Irvin for assignment Tuesday, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports. The left-hander was demoted to the bullpen in early July and has now been removed from the 26-man and 40-man rosters entirely. Irvin had a respectable 4.06 ERA in 14 starts but surrendered 17 earned runs over 19.1 innings of relief.

  • Orioles' Cole Irvin: Relegated to bullpen

Manager Brandon Hyde said Wednesday that Irvin will pitch out of the bullpen going forward, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports. The decision to move Irvin to the bullpen comes after he allowed five runs in 3.2 innings during his most recent start Sunday against the Rangers, giving him a 10.22 ERA over 12.1 innings across his last three starts. Hyde noted there is still a possibility that the 30-year-old southpaw returns to the rotation at some point, but he would likely need to string together several solid performances out of the bullpen before that happens.

  • Orioles' Cole Irvin: Another shaky outing Sunday

Irvin (6-5) took the loss against the Rangers on Sunday, allowing five runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two over 3.2 innings. Irvin served up a two-run blast to Derek Hill in the second and was chased out of the game in the fourth after surrendering a triple, three singles and a walk, leading to three more runs for the Rangers. He's now failed to cover at least five innings in three straight starts and has given up 14 runs over that span while compiling just a 5:4 K:BB in his last 12.1 innings pitched. Irvin now owns a 4.13 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 56:17 K:BB in 80.2 innings this season. He's lined up for a start against the Athletics this weekend, though it's worth monitoring what manager Brandon Hyde decides to do with his rotation spot following his recent struggles with Dean Kremer (triceps) on the cusp of returning from a rehab assignment.

  • Orioles' Cole Irvin: Struggles in no-decision

Irvin did not factor into the decision in a win over the Yankees on Thursday, allowing five runs on five hits and two walks over 4.2 innings while striking out two. Irvin had a hard time with the Yankees' lineup for much of the afternoon, allowing runs in three of the five innings in which he appeared before being relieved by Bryan Baker. Irvin surrendered two home runs in the contest, something he hadn't done in any of his previous 13 outings, while he also matched his season high with five runs allowed. Irvin had gone at least five innings in four consecutive starts prior to Thursday's game and will look to bounce back next week when the Orioles take on the Guardians in Baltimore.

  • Orioles' Cole Irvin: Early woes mar outing

Irvin (6-3) suffered the loss Thursday, allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits and a walk over 5.2 innings against Atlanta. He struck out eight. Irvin allowed hits to the first three batters in the game, including back-to-back doubles that immediately put the Orioles in a two-run hole. He was able to piece things together from there, allowing only one more earned run and striking out a season-high eight batters to keep the O's in the game. It's the third-straight game Irvin has allowed eight or more hits, though it's just the second time in his last 11 outings he's given up as many as three earned runs, raising his ERA to 3.03 through 68.1 innings. He's next slated to take the hill early next week when the Orioles travel to New York for a showdown against the first-place Yankees.

  • Orioles' Cole Irvin: Fans six in sixth win

Irvin (6-2) picked up the win Friday in a 6-3 victory over the Rays, giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits over 5.2 innings. He struck out six without walking a battter. Three straight singles in the sixth inning kept Irvin from recording his fifth quality start of the season, but the southpaw did tie his season high in strikeouts. He hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in any of his last 10 appearances (eight starts) dating back to April 15, posting a 1.88 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 36:7 K:BB through 52.2 innings over that stretch. Irvin will look to continue his breakout campaign in his next outing, which lines up to come at home next week against Atlanta.

  • Orioles' Cole Irvin: Set to start Friday

Irvin will start Friday's game against the Rays, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. Irvin will start on regular rest, so it's not particularly notable that he will take the ball for Baltimore on Friday. However, that also moves Kyle Bradish back at least one more game, giving him multiple extra days of rest after Cade Povich took Bradish's original turn Thursday.

  • Orioles' Cole Irvin: Fans six in victory

Irvin (5-2) picked up the win in Monday's 11-3 victory over Boston, scattering four hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out six and did not allow a run. The 30-year-old southpaw was sharp, not allowing an extra-base hit and matching his season best with six strikeouts. The three walks were uncharacteristic for Irvin, who allowed just one free pass over his previous 24.1 innings pitched. After allowing nine earned runs over his first two starts of the season, Irvin has yielded just seven earned runs over his past eight starts, good for a 1.55 ERA in that span. He will look to keep it rolling in his next start, currently scheduled for this weekend in Tampa.

  • Orioles' Cole Irvin: Locked in to start Monday

Irvin will start Monday's game against the Red Sox in Baltimore, Danielle Allentuck of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports. As expected, Irvin will draw back into the rotation as a replacement for John Means (forearm), who was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday. Though he made his last two appearances in relief, Irvin shouldn't be in line for any major workload restrictions Monday after he covered 3.1 innings out of the bullpen last Wednesday against the Cardinals. Over his prior seven starts with Baltimore this season, Irvin went 4-1 with a 2.90 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 28:8 K:BB in 40.1 innings.

  • Orioles' Cole Irvin: Rejoining rotation

Irvin will re-enter the Orioles' rotation following the injury to John Means (forearm), Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports. Each of Irvin's last two appearances have come in relief, but he's been terrific in seven starts this season, collecting a 2.90 ERA and 28:8 K:BB over 40.1 innings of work. Means' next turn comes up Monday in Baltimore against the Red Sox, and Irvin would be on regular rest that day after throwing 3.1 relief innings in Wednesday's loss to the Cardinals.

  • Orioles' Cole Irvin: Works in relief Sunday

Irvin appeared out of the bullpen in Sunday's 6-3 win over the Mariners, collecting his first hold of the season while working around one hit and allowing no walks in two scoreless innings. Despite posting a 2.90 ERA while starting in his first seven appearances of the season, Irvin was moved to the bullpen over the weekend while the Orioles were able to get by with a shortened rotation due to off days last Tuesday and Thursday. According to Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun, manager Brandon Hyde suggested that Irvin won't be a regular member of the bullpen moving forward, as the Orioles plan to move back to a six-man rotation while they're now in the midst of a stretch of 30 games in 31 days. Per Jake Rill of MLB.com, Irvin isn't scheduled to start any of the Orioles' remaining five games this week, but the southpaw could re-enter the rotation next week or the week after.

  • Orioles' Cole Irvin: Just misses quality start Friday

Irvin (4-1) picked up the win Friday, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk over 5.2 innings in a 4-2 victory over the Diamondbacks. He struck out six. The southpaw was sharp and had given up only a solo shot to Ketel Marte heading into the sixth inning, but Irvin got the hook after 95 pitches (62 strikes) with runners on first and second and two outs. Albert Suarez then promptly gave up a single to let one of the inherited runners score, but the O's bullpen took care of business the rest of the way. Irvin generated 30 called or swinging strikes as he won his fourth straight start, and after a bumpy beginning to the season he's posted a 1.19 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 21:3 K:BB in 30.1 innings over his last five outings. He'll look to keep rolling in his next trip to the mound, which is scheduled to come at home next week against the Blue Jays.
