Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Taking batting practice
Edman (ankle) began taking batting practice Friday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
Edman began taking swings in the cages earlier in the week, and he could progress to facing velocity against a machine within the next few days if everything goes according to plan. There's still no telling when he'll be game-ready, though he's already been ruled out for Opening Day.

Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Taking swings in batting cage
Edman (ankle) has started taking swings in the batting cage but is not expected to play in any Cactus League games before Dodgers camp breaks, Jack Harris of the California Post reports.
Edman is recovering from offseason right ankle surgery and has already been ruled out for Opening Day. He will likely stay back in extended spring training to continue his rehab before eventually getting assigned to a minor-league affiliate for a rehab assignment. The Dodgers have not yet revealed a target date for Edman's season debut.

Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Ruled out for Opening Day
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Monday that Edman (ankle) will begin the season on the injured list, Jack Harris of the California Post reports.
Edman has dealt with a nagging right ankle injury for a couple years and finally underwent surgery to correct the issue this offseason. Roberts said Monday that the team will take a "methodical" pace with Edman and "take the long view" with his return, suggesting it's likely to be longer than a minimum stay on the injured list for the switch hitter. While Edman is out, Hyeseong Kim, Miguel Rojas and Alex Freeland will be in the mix for playing time at second base for the Dodgers.

Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Question mark for Opening Day
Edman (ankle) will have a delayed start to spring training as he continues to rehab from ankle surgery, and it's possible he won't be available by Opening Day, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.
The 30-year-old underwent the ankle surgery in mid-November, but his recovery and rehab apparently haven't gone fully according to plan. Edman still has about two months to get up to speed for Opening Day, and it'll be worth keeping an eye on his rehab progress throughout spring training. Hyeseong Kim and Andy Ibanez could form a platoon at second base should Edman require a stint on the IL to begin 2026.

Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Ankle surgery scheduled
Edman will undergo surgery on his right ankle sometime next week, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
Edman has dealt with ankle trouble multiple times within the past couple of years, and he'll now elect to go under the knife in order to properly address the issue. General manager Brandon Gomes said the team expects Edman to be ready for the start of spring training, so the 30-year-old's availability for Opening Day likely won't be affected.

Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Offseason ankle surgery possible
Edman said Saturday that he and the Dodgers will "probably evaluate" whether he should undergo offseason surgery on his nagging right ankle injury, DodgersBeat.com reports.
Edman first injured his ankle in June 2024 on a rehab assignment when he was still a member of the Cardinals. He's aggravated it multiple times since then, leading to a pair of stints on the injured list this season. While Edman noted Saturday that his ankle is currently "feeling really good," the Dodgers have been limiting the super utility player to second base due to concern over the injury flaring up again. If it's decided after the World Series that ankle surgery is needed, Edman could get a late start to the 2026 season. The lingering ankle problem could be the main cause in Edman's lack of activity on the basepaths the last two years. After averaging 29.7 steals per season from 2021-to-2023 with the Cardinals, Edman has just nine stolen bases in 10 attempts during his 134 games as a Dodger, and he's also seen his sprint speed drop off the last two seasons.

After belting a solo homer during Los Angeles' 10-5 victory in Game 1, Edman will stay in the dugout to begin the second game of the series. His absence will allow Miguel Rojas to start at the keystone and bat eighth.
