Player Outlook
Tommy Edman's recovery from offseason wrist surgery dragged on much longer than anticipated, as he didn't make his season debut until late August. The super utility player was a Dodger by that time, having been flipped there from the Cardinals at the trade deadline in a three-team deal with the White Sox. Edman clubbed a surprising six home runs in September before starring for the Dodgers in the postseason. The switch-hitting Edman has long been better from the right side of the plate, and he took that to the extreme during a small sample with the Dodgers in collecting a 1.299 OPS against lefties and .523 OPS versus righties. He's going to be an everyday guy in 2025 and is expected to see significant action in center field, however, but he offers plus defense at whatever position the team decides to use him. Edman did finish shy of 20 games played at shortstop and second base, so his positional eligibility could be limited.

  • Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Belts homer in Tokyo

Edman went 1-for-5 with a solo home run Wednesday in a 6-3 victory versus the Cubs. Edman started at second base for the second straight game and went 1-for-5 in both contests. His lone hit Wednesday left the yard, as Edman drilled a solo shot to left field in the third inning. Edman should continue to be part of the lineup most days, though he could work more in center field at some point in the campaign when the Dodgers elect to bring Hyeseong Kim up from the minors.

  • Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Batting second against Cubs

Edman will start at second base and bat second Tuesday against the Cubs in the first game of the 2025 Tokyo Series. In the absence of Mookie Betts (illness), the switch-hitting Edman will move up to the two hole to face southpaw Shota Imanaga in the regular-season opener, breaking up lefties Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman in the Los Angeles lineup. Edman had an impressive spring with three homers and a .909 OPS in 12 Cactus League games, and he appears slated for a regular role for the Dodgers between second base and center field.

  • Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Goes deep for third time in spring

Edman went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run, an additional RBI and a walk in Tuesday's Cactus League win over Cleveland. Edman kicked off the scoring in the contest with a two-run shot in the first inning and later plated another run with a bases-loaded walk. He started at second base, which is likely where he'll slot in at the beginning of the campaign while Hyeseong Kim works on his hitting in the minors. Edman is expected to eventually move out to center field, so he should be a consistent presence in the Dodgers' lineup throughout the campaign.

  • Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Swats second spring homer

Edman went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Thursday's Cactus League victory against Texas. Through 23 at-bats this spring, Edman has five hits, including two homers and a double. He started in center field Thursday, and he has also logged time at second base. Edman could begin the campaign as Los Angeles' starter at the keystone if the organization opts to have Hyeseong Kim spend some time in the minors as he adjusts to baseball in North America. If that's the case, Edman could quickly gain fantasy eligibility at second base in leagues with a 20-game threshold, boosting his value considerably.

  • Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Gets start at second base

Edman is starting at second base and batting second in Tuesday's Cactus League game against the Mariners. Hyeseong Kim's bat might not be ready for primetime, so the Dodgers could open Kim at Triple-A and give Edman the second-base job instead, at least to open the year. Edman is only eligible in the outfield in formats that require 20 games played at a position the prior season, but he is a good bet to add second base or even shortstop eligibility in season.

  • Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Pegged for center field duty

Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes said Monday that the team plans for Edman to be its center fielder next season, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. Edman offers the versatility to move around to multiple positions, if needed, and that might be required during the season. However, at this early stage of the offseason, the plan is for the switch hitter to see most of his action in center field. Edman -- who signed a five-year, $74 million contract extension in late November -- slashed .237/.294/.417 in 37 regular-season games and .328/.354/.508 in 16 postseason contests for the Dodgers.

  • Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Signs five-year extension

Edman signed a five-year, $74 million contract extension with the Dodgers on Friday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Edman started the 2024 regular season on the Cardinals' injured list due to lingering pain in his surgically repaired right wrist. He began his rehab assignment in early July, but before he could be activated from the IL, Edman was sent to the Dodgers at the trade deadline. He made his 2024 regular-season debut with the Dodgers in mid-August, and his versatility to play both in the infield and center field played a key role in the Dodgers' World Series run, during which he was named MVP of the NLCS against the Mets. He finished the postseason with a slash line of .328/.354/.508 with five stolen bases, two home runs and 13 RBI across 67 plate appearances.

  • Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Not starting Friday

Edman is absent from Friday's lineup against Colorado, Kirsten Watson of Spectrum SportsNet LA reports. Over his last 12 games, Edman has slashed .327/.377/.755 with six home runs and 14 RBI across 53 plate appearances. He'll cede his spot in center field to Andy Pages on Friday, who will bat sixth.

Edman went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 8-4 win against Miami. Edman contributed to a five-run fourth inning for Los Angeles with a two-run shot to right field. The homer was his sixth in his past eight games, a span in which eight of his nine hits have gone for extra bases. Since being activated from the IL for his season debut Aug. 19, Edman has slashed .279/.309/.510 with six homers, 17 RBI, 15 runs and five steals over 27 contests.

  • Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Another homer Sunday

Edman went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and a double in Sunday's win over Atlanta. Edman went deep to right-center off John Brebbia in the ninth for his fifth homer in five games after being homerless for his first 19 games of the season. Over his last eight games, Edman has four multi-hit efforts with seven extra-base hits and 10 RBI. For the year, he's slashing .300/.333/.522 with five homers, 15 RBI, 13 runs, five steals and a 5:18 BB:K in 96 plate appearances.

  • Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Homers twice in loss

Edman went 2-for-4 with two solo home runs in Tuesday's loss to the Cubs. Edman went deep off Shota Imanaga in each of his first two at-bats after having zero homers in 71 at-bats coming into the game. Edman now has multiple hits in three of his last four games and is slashing .293/.316/.427 with five extra-base hits, nine RBI, 10 runs, five steals and a 3:15 BB:K in 79 plate appearances this season.

  • Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Strong off bench

Edman went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a stolen base in Saturday's 8-6 win over the Diamondbacks. Edman didn't start the contest, but he was impactful after entering the game as a pinch hitter in the sixth inning. He delivered the winning hit, a two-run single in the ninth. This was his third multi-hit effort over 11 games this season, and he's now hitting .275 with three RBI, three steals and five runs scored, though he's still searching for his first home run in Dodger blue.

  • Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Taking seat Saturday

Edman isn't in the Dodgers' lineup for Saturday's game against Arizona. Edman will get a day to regroup Saturday after slashing .243/.256/.324 with one RBI and two stolen bases through his first 10 games with the Dodgers. Kevin Kiermaier will fill in for him in center field while Miguel Rojas starts at shortstop.

  • Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Swipes bag in team debut

Edman went 1-for-3 with a stolen base in Monday's 3-0 win over the Mariners. Edman had missed all of the season prior to Monday while recovering from wrist surgery, and he was acquired from the Cardinals at the trade deadline. Edman slashed just .248/.307/.399 last year, adding 13 home runs, 27 stolen bases, 47 RBI and 69 runs scored over 137 contests. He's a utility man, but Edman offers more upside as a batter than defensive ace Kevin Kiermaier in center field, so look for that to be Edman's primary position to begin his Dodgers tenure.

  • Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Activated from 60-day IL

Edman (wrist) was activated from the 60-day injured list Monday, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. Edman is now officially geared up for his season and team debut. The 29-year-old has been sidelined for the entirety of the 2024 campaign while working his way back from wrist surgery and an ankle sprain. Edman was traded to the Dodgers on July 29 and he has produced a .294 average with a home run, four RBI, five runs scored and a stolen base over 17 at-bats in six games with Triple-A Oklahoma while on a rehab assignment. Andy Pages was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move Monday, freeing up a spot for Edman in the outfield, where he's expected to see the majority of his playing time.

  • Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Set to be activated

Edman (wrist) will be activated from the injured list Monday, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. Edman has been sidelined for the entire season while recovering from wrist surgery and an ankle sprain. He most recently began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Aug. 10 and has gone 5-for-17 with six walks and only two strikeouts. Edman looks likely to get the majority of his playing time in center field, though he is capable of playing a super-utility role.

  • Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Aiming for season debut Monday

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM Friday that the hope is Edman (wrist/ankle) will be ready for activation from the 60-day injured list Monday. Acquired from the Cardinals at the trade deadline, Edman has been out all season recovering from wrist surgery and more recently an ankle sprain, but his Dodgers debut is on the horizon. Edman is 5-for-15 with one home run and a 1:3 K:BB in five rehab games with Triple-A Oklahoma City. He's expected to see the bulk of his action in center field for the Dodgers, but Edman also made a start at shortstop at OKC this week and offers the versatility to play multiple spots if needed.

  • Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Eyeing debut for next homestand

President of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said Sunday in an interview with Jim Bowden of MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM that he expects Edman (wrist) to be reinstated from the 60-day injured list during the Dodgers' next homestand, which begins Aug. 19. On the shelf all season while recovering from right wrist surgery in addition to being slowed down by a sprained ankle during his rehab program, Edman appeared in eight games as a designated hitter for the Cardinals' Double-A affiliate before he was traded to the Dodgers on July 29. Edman had taken part in workouts and simulated games in front of the Dodgers' coaching staff in the week and a half after his acquisition before he resumed his rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Saturday, when he started in center field and went 1-for-3 with a run scored while playing six innings. According to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Edman would play primarily in center field during his rehab assignment, but the 29-year-old is also likely to get some exposure to the infield while with Oklahoma City. Edman may not unseat Andy Pages as the primary option in center field once activated, but he should find a regular spot in the lineup somewhere in the infield or outfield when the Dodgers face left-handed pitching.

  • Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Resumes rehab stint

Edman (wrist) went 1-for-3 and scored a run while playing six innings in center field in a rehab game for Triple-A Oklahoma City on Saturday. Edman's previous rehab appearance had come July 28, when he was still in the Cardinals organization. The utility man was traded to the Dodgers on July 29, and the team waited until Edman was ready to play the field before having him return to game action, as he had previously been limited to designated-hitter duties over his eight rehab games with the Cardinals.

  • Dodgers' Tommy Edman: Rehab assignment on tap

Edman (wrist) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Oklahoma City during the weekend, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports. Edman is slated to play in a simulated game Thursday to test his wrist in the field, and he'll head back out on a rehab assignment if all goes well. The 29-year-old infielder is expected to remain in the minors for at least a week in what will be his third separate rehab stint of the year.
