  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Steals base in win

McCarthy went 2-for-5 with a stolen base in Wednesday's 9-4 win over Colorado. McCarthy stole his 22nd bag of the season and the first in 12 games. It's been a quiet month for McCarthy, who's batting .222 (14-for-63) with one double, two RBI and two steals (caught twice) over 16 games in September.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Taking seat Tuesday

McCarthy is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Giants. Southpaw Kyle Harrison is pitching Tuesday for San Francisco, and McCarthy will receive a well-deserved day off after a run of 24 consecutive starts, during which he posted an .862 OPS with five homers, four steals, 26 RBI and 16 runs. Jorge Barrosa is manning center field and batting ninth in the series opener.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Bats second again

McCarthy batted second and went 0-for-4 with a walk and an RBI in Saturday's 4-1 win over the Red Sox. McCarthy worked a bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning to make it a 3-0 game. He's been the primary second spot batter since Ketel Marte (ankle) first sustained an injury that eventually landed him on the 10-day injured list. In nine games batting second since Marte's injury, McCarthy is hitting .325 (13-for-40) with two home runs, 12 RBI, three walks, one steal and eight runs scored.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Goes deep in win

McCarthy went 1-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and an additional run scored in Monday's 9-6 win over Miami. McCarthy belted a two-run homer in the eighth inning, his seventh blast of the season. He's made 12 consecutive starts and helped the Diamondbacks overcome underperforming outfielders Corbin Carroll (.219) and Alek Thomas (.191). During that 12-game stretch, McCarthy is batting .388/.436/.694 with four home runs, 18 RBI, nine runs and two steals.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Stays hot Tuesday

McCarthy went 3-for-5 with two RBI in Tuesday's win over the Rockies. Tuesday's game was McCarthy's fourth in a row with multiple hits and multiple RBI. He came up to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth with his team down a run and won the game for the Diamondbacks on a walk-off single that scored two. Over his last 17 games, McCarthy is batting .460/.477/.730 with 19 RBI. He's become one of the hottest hitters in baseball over the last couple of weeks and seems to have supplanted Alek Thomas in the Diamondbacks' outfield pecking order for now.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Two homers in rout

McCarthy went 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI in Saturday's 11-1 win over the Phillies. McCarthy hit two-run blasts in the fifth and seventh innings to help the Diamondbacks pull off a blowout win. This was his fifth multi-hit effort since July 30 -- over 11 games in that span, the outfielder has gone 15-for-36 (.417) with five extra-base hits and nine RBI. McCarthy isn't known for his power, having never hit more than eight homers in a single season. He's at six homers, 32 RBI, 44 runs scored, 16 stolen bases and a .298/.371/.441 slash line through 99 contests in 2024.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: On bench for first game of twin bill

McCarthy is out of the lineup for the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Guardians. McCarthy had started in eight of the Diamondbacks' previous nine games, but he still looks to be the club's fourth outfielder behind Corbin Carroll, Lourdes Gurriel and Alek Thomas. Though he's a left-handed hitter, McCarthy is slashing .360/.422/.467 over 83 plate appearances against southpaws this season and should continue to be a regular part of the starting nine when the Diamondbacks face lefties. McCarthy may have to settle for more of a part-time role, however, when the Diamondbacks face righties and have all their key outfielders available.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Records three hits, steals base

McCarthy went 3-for-4 with a triple, a run and a stolen base Wednesday in a 5-4 win against the Nationals. McCarthy scored the first run of the game in the third inning as a result of a two-out triple and a MacKenzie Gore wild pitch. The outfielder finished with his second straight three-hit contest and his third multi-hit performance over his past five games. Over that span, McCarthy is batting a blistering .545 (12-for-22) with a double, two triples, five runs and two thefts.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Starts in right field

McCarthy started in right field and went 1-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored in Tuesday's 6-2 loss to Atlanta. McCarthy entered the starting lineup in right field, replacing Corbin Carroll, who sat for the second straight time against a left-handed starter. Carroll had a .721 OPS against southpaws in 2023 but that's dropped to .539 in 2024. McCarthy, meanwhile, owns a career .745 OPS and is up to .897 in 2024 against southpaws.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Returns to starting lineup

McCarthy started in right field and went 1-for-5 with a stolen base and two runs scored in Wednesday's 12-4 win over the Dodgers. A day after being held out of the starting lineup against a right-hander in favor of Alek Thomas fresh off the injured list, the lefty-hitting McCarthy was back in there Wednesday against a righty. The presumption is that Thomas will be in lineups most nights against right-handers, and that his absence Wednesday was due to a return from a three-month absence. McCarthy's playing time takes a hit with Thomas' return, but he can still have value in a part-time role. He's second on the club with 13 steals.

McCarthy isn't in the Diamondbacks' lineup for Friday's game against the Athletics. Left-hander JP Sears will toe the slab Friday for the A's, meaning the lefty-hitting McCarthy will head to the bench to begin the game. Randal Grichuk will start in right field instead and bat fifth.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Plates three, swipes bag

McCarthy went 1-for-3 with three RBI and a stolen base during Sunday's 12-5 win over the White Sox. McCarthy was productive despite generating only one hit. He stole second after walking in the first inning, scored Joc Pederson on a fielder's choice in the third frame and plated Pederson again in the fourth on a sacrifice fly before hitting an RBI triple in the sixth. McCarthy's pilfer was his 10th of the campaign, and his fifth of June. He's slashing .279/.365/.409 through 180 plate appearances.

McCarthy isn't in the Diamondbacks' lineup Tuesday against the Angels. With southpaw Jose Suarez slated to start on the mound for the Angels, the lefty-hitting McCarthy will step out of the lineup. Randal Grichuk will fill the open spot in right field while batting fifth.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Not starting Thursday

McCarthy isn't in the Diamondbacks' lineup for Thursday's game versus the Padres. McCarthy was hit by two pitches during Wednesday's loss to the Giants, and the Diamondbacks will give him a recovery day during Thursday's series opener. Pavin Smith will fill in as Arizona's right fielder while batting sixth.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Two steals in win

McCarthy went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs scored in a 10-5 win over the Mets on Saturday. McCarthy singled, stole two bases and scored on a Christian Walker grand slam in the third inning, and he later singled and scored in the eighth. McCarthy was a late addition to the lineup after Lourdes Gurriel (undisclosed) was scratched and made the most of a rare opportunity to face a left-handed starter. Since May 21, McCarthy has started only six of a possible 10 games but has tallied four steals during that stretch.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Day off Wednesday

McCarthy isn't in the Diamondbacks' lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers. McCarthy will sit down for Wednesday's series finale after going 3-for-8 with a solo homer during the first two games of the series. Randal Grichuk will take over in right field and bat sixth.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Idle against southpaw

McCarthy is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Tigers. The lefty-hitting McCarthy will give way to Randal Grichuk in right field Friday as Detroit trots out the left-handed Tarik Skubal. McCarthy is 2-for-15 (.133) at the plate since May 5.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Not starting Monday

McCarthy is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Reds. The lefty-hitting McCarthy will sit in the series opener Monday, despite Cincinnati bringing a right-hander in Graham Ashcraft to the hill. Pavin Smith will step in as the starting right field in place of McCarthy, who hit his first home run of the season in Sunday's 9-2 win over the Orioles.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Taking seat Wednesday

McCarthy is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Reds. McCarthy maintains a .369 on-base percentage over 86 plate appearances this season and has seemingly moved into an everyday role in the outfield while Alek Thomas (hamstring) is on the shelf, but the 26-year-old McCarthy will hit the bench Wednesday. The Diamondbacks haven't indicated that the lefty-hitting McCarthy is dealing with an injury, but he was lifted for a pinch hitter in Tuesday's 6-2 win and is now on the bench Wednesday while the Reds bring a right-hander (Graham Ashcraft) to the hill. Pavin Smith will replace McCarthy in the Arizona outfield.
