Cardinals' JJ Wetherholt: Gets cortisone shot for injured wrist

Wetherholt was given a cortisone injection Tuesday to combat tendinitis in his right wrist, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Wetherholt will rest for 72 hours to wait for the shot to take effect, and after that he will aim to re-incorporate baseball activities. The rookie infielder is with the Cardinals on their road trip and is eligible for activation from the 10-day injured list on the final day of that trip Sept. 9. Wetherholt could be activated on that date, but it will depend on how his wrist responds.

Wetherholt has dealt with discomfort in his wrist for the past month, and he was finally placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday after the pain had become "pretty, pretty bad" in recent days, per the infielder. He's been diagnosed with tendinitis, and a plan for treatment will be mapped out during his early-week exam. The Cardinals expect Wetherholt to return sometime in September, but more clarity regarding a timetable could be available later this week.

Wetherholt went 1-for-3 with two walks, a two-run double and a run scored during the Cardinals' 3-1 win over the Yankees on Wednesday.
The game was scoreless heading into the fifth inning, but Wetherholt changed that with a two-run double to center field before being brought home on a ground rule-double by Ivan Herrera. Wetherholt has been scuffling a bit at the plate since the All-Star break with a .659 OPS in 19 games. He's still in the midst of a productive rookie campaign with a .739 OPS with 12 steals, 16 home runs and 43 RBI across 493 plate appearances.

Wetherholt tied things up at 2-2 with a solo homer off Caleb Thielbar in the seventh inning. It was the 16th home run of the season for Wetherholt, but he has struggled coming out of the All-Star break with a .214/.302/.375 slash line, three steals, three homers and five RBI over 63 plate appearances.
Wetherholt went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 1-0 win over the Angels.
Wetherholt's 409-foot blast off Reid Detmers in the sixth inning proved to be the game's only offense. Through six games since returning from the All-Star break, the 23-year-old rookie has gone 6-for-26 with two homers, four RBI, four runs scored and a stolen base. On the year, he's slashing .257/.352/.403 with 15 homers, 40 RBI, 62 runs scored and 10 steals across 435 plate appearances.
The Cardinals are in agreement with Wetherholt on a long-term contract extension, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Per Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the deal is worth eight years and $112.5 million and could max out at $132 million if all escalators are reached. Wetherholt is the likely National League Rookie of the Year front-runner, sporting a .267/.362/.411 batting line with 13 home runs, nine stolen bases and a 38:61 BB:K over 87 contests. The 23-year-old is also leading all second basemen in outs above average at plus-16.
