  • Athletics' Jordan Groshans: Headed to Oakland

The Athletics acquired Groshans from the Yankees on Sunday in exchange for first baseman J.D. Davis and cash considerations. After beginning the season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre, Groshans was moved in late April Double-A Somerset, with whom he was slashing .234/.302/.316 with no home runs or stolen bases across 121 plate appearances. The 23-year-old Groshans hasn't seen major-league action since 2022 and will now move on to the fourth organization of his career.

  • Yankees' Jordan Groshans: Loses 40-man roster spot

Groshans was designated for assignment by the Yankees on Wednesday. He'll exit the 40-man roster in favor of Jahmai Jones, who was scooped up via waivers. Groshans was a waiver claim himself just a couple weeks ago and now could be on the move again.

  • Marlins' Jordan Groshans: DFA'd by Fish

The Marlins designated Groshans for assignment Tuesday. Groshans will lose his spot on the 40-man roster following the acquisition of Jonah Bride from Oakland on Tuesday. After making his MLB debut in 2022, Groshans spent all of last season with Triple-A Jacksonville, where he slashed .244/.341/.331 with 61 RBI in 528 plate appearances. The 24-year-old will presumably return to Jacksonville to begin 2024.

  • Marlins' Jordan Groshans: Battling sore shoulder

Groshans is dealing with a sore shoulder, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Groshans made a pair of diving plays Friday and visited a doctor about his shoulder the next day. While that may not bode well, a specific diagnosis beyond "soreness" has yet to emerge. Groshans could win a bench spot this spring after appearing in 17 big-league games last season, though the recent addition of Yuli Gurriel could hurt his chances.

  • Marlins' Jordan Groshans: Getting work at first base

Groshans has been getting regular work at first base during Grapefruit League games to begin spring training, improving his odds of breaking camp on the 26-man roster, Jordan McPherson of The Miami Herald reports. The Marlins don't have an established backup to Garrett Cooper at first base, so if Groshans shows he can handle the position, he could work his way into a bench role to begin the season. The 23-year-old's prospect status has dimmed the last couple of years as his projected power has never materialized, but after being acquired from the Blue Jays at the trade deadline last year, he batted a solid .262 through his first 17 big-league games. Groshans came up through Toronto's system as a shortstop, and he could wind up filling a multi-position utility role in Miami.

  • Marlins' Jordan Groshans: Moves into utility role

Groshans is out of the lineup for Monday's game against Atlanta, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Groshans started in six of the Marlins' past seven games at third base and went 6-for-23 with no extra-base hits, one walk and three runs. Now that Joey Wendle is healthy again to close out the season, Groshans may handle more of a utility role during the Marlins' three-game series with Atlanta.

  • Marlins' Jordan Groshans: Takes seat Saturday

Groshans isn't starting Saturday against the Nationals, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Groshans started the last four games and went 3-for-14 with a run, an RBI, a walk and a strikeout. Jon Berti will take over at the hot corner and lead off Saturday.

  • Marlins' Jordan Groshans: First three career hits

Groshans went 3-for-3 in Wednesday's 6-1 loss against the Phillies. After going hitless in three at-bats in his career debut Tuesday, Groshans turned things around with a three-hit effort Wednesday. The rookie peppered his hits across the outfield, which is in line with his approach in Triple-A this season where he hit more balls the other way than he did to the pull side. The balanced approach likely contributed to his .301 average over his last 133 plate appearances in the minors and may make him a sneaky source of batting average down the stretch if he sees regular playing time.

  • Marlins' Jordan Groshans: Hitless in debut

Groshans went 0-for-3 in his major-league debut Tuesday as the Phillies beat the Marlins, 2-1. Groshans batted eighth and played third base in his first big-league game, flying out twice and grounding out once. Miami acquired the former top prospect in a deal that sent Zach Pop and Anthony Bass to Toronto before the trade deadline. Since joining Triple-A Jacksonville in August, Groshans has posted a .301/.399/.416 slash line with two homers and a 19:19 BB:K. He'll likely serve in a utility role down the stretch for the Marlins.

  • Marlins' Jordan Groshans: Making MLB debut Tuesday

Groshans' contract was selected from Triple-A Jacksonville and he is starting Tuesday against the Phillies, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports. Groshans was traded from Toronto to Miami at the trade deadline for big-league relievers. He has a very strong track record of patience and an ability to make frequent contact in the minors, but Groshans has struggled to tap into his raw power in games. The No. 12 overall pick in 2018 hit .301/.398/.416 (123 wRC+) with two home runs and as many walks as strikeouts (19) in 31 games at Triple-A Jacksonville. Since the trade, he played 12 games at third base, 10 games at shortstop and nine games at second base, so he could play all over the infield over the final three weeks of the season.

  • Marlins' Jordan Groshans: Set to be called up Tuesday

Groshans is expected to be called up by the Marlins on Tuesday, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports. Groshans posted an .814 OPS over 31 games with Triple-A Jacksonville after being acquired from the Blue Jays at the trade deadline, and it appears that earned him his first trip to the big leagues.

  • Marlins' Jordan Groshans: Traded to Miami for relievers

Groshans was traded from the Blue Jays to the Marlins on Tuesday in exchange for Anthony Bass and Zach Pop, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. This was something of a make-or-break year for Groshans to maintain his prospect stock, and so far he has come up short. A 22-year-old shortstop who could also end up at third base, Groshans has hit .250/.348/.296 with one home run in 279 plate appearances at Triple-A. His plate skills are very strong, but despite standing a muscular 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, Groshans has been unable to tap into impact game power thus far.

  • Blue Jays' Jordan Groshans: Set for Triple-A debut

Groshans will make his debut for Triple-A Buffalo on Friday. He was dealing with an oblique injury in spring training and was then sent to Single-A Dunedin, which is where the Jays' spring training complex is, to ramp up in games. Groshans notched four hits in five games at Single-A and is now ready to get his first taste of Triple-A. He is capable of playing all over the infield and was reportedly very impressive this spring before getting injured.

  • Blue Jays' Jordan Groshans: Active at Low-A Dunedin

Groshans (groin) has joined Low-A Dunedin, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Groshans suffered an oblique strain late in camp and hasn't yet appeared in any minor-league games this year. He'll build up in Dunedin since the Blue Jays' extended spring training complex is located there, but he should head to Double-A New Hampshire or Triple-A Buffalo at some point.

  • Blue Jays' Jordan Groshans: Heating up at Double-A

Groshans is batting .318 (14-for-44) over his last 12 games for Double-A New Hampshire with a home run, six doubles and a 9:8 BB:K. The 21-year-old has had trouble finding in-game power this summer, and his homer Wednesday was only his sixth in 66 games this season and first since June 25. Groshans has maintained good habits during that power drought though, and he's finally beginning to see better results. Toronto's No. 1 fantasy prospect should be viewed as the organization's third baseman of the future following the trade of Austin Martin and Cavan Biggio's washout 2021, and Groshans is putting himself in position to make his big-league debut sometime next season.

  • Blue Jays' Jordan Groshans: No homers since late June

Groshans hasn't hit a home run for Double-A New Hampshire since a two-homer effort back on June 25, though he's still managed to hit .294/.374/.412 with 10 doubles and an 11:18 BB:K in the 25 ensuing games. His lack of home-run power is certainly concerning, but Groshans has kept hitting nonetheless, and he's cut down his strikeout rate to a noteworthy degree in the process. The Fisher Cats also play in a park that typically favors pitchers. Of course, as a guy who has minimal speed and is expected to land at third base in the majors, he's going to have to hit the ball out of the yard way more often. Groshans has only five homers on the season, and if he doesn't ultimately find a way to tap into his raw power, he'll run the risk of falling into more of a utility-type profile.

  • Blue Jays' Jordan Groshans: Dealing with sore back

Groshans hasn't played at Double-A New Hampshire since May 18 due to mild lower-back soreness, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports. The Blue Jays don't appear to be overly concerned about the injury and believe that with some extra rest, Groshans will be able to avoid an extended absence. The 21-year-old dabbled at both shortstop and third base through his first 11 games with New Hampshire, batting .244 with no home runs and no stolen bases while striking out 13 times in 48 plate appearances (27.1 percent).

  • Blue Jays' Jordan Groshans: Will split time at shortstop

Groshans will split his time between shortstop and third base for Double-A New Hampshire, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports. The Jays want to continue the 21-year-old's development at short, but with Austin Martin on the Fisher Cats as well, Groshans will shift to the hot corner when Martin is at the six. Third base is still the most likely home in the majors for Groshans, but at the very least, this suggests the organization isn't sold on Bo Bichette sticking at shortstop in the long term.

  • Blue Jays' Jordan Groshans: Heading to Double-A

Groshans will open the season with Double-A New Hampshire, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. Groshans has only played 71 career professional games, none of which have come above Low-A, but he's still on track in his development even after the canceled minor-league season last year. He's unlikely to make his major-league debut this season but is on track to do so next year if he looks good in the upper minors.

  • Blue Jays' Jordan Groshans: Bound for minor-league camp

The Blue Jays reassigned Groshans to their minor-league camp Thursday. Groshans was one of 25 players the Blue Jays sent to minor-league camp in their latest round of roster cuts. The 21-year-old third baseman is one of the top position prospects in the organization, but the Blue Jays likely aren't counting on him making any contributions in the majors in 2021 with Cavan Biggio and Vladimir Guerrero slated to handle most of the work at the hot corner. Groshans will likely head to Double-A New Hampshire or High-A Vancouver when the minor-league season begins.
