  • Rays' Jesse Scholtens: Heads to IL due to wrist strain

The Rays placed Scholtens on the 15-day injured list Tuesday due to a right wrist strain. Scholtens presumably sustained the injury during his relief appearance against the Orioles on Monday, when he was charged with the loss and a blown save after surrendering five runs (three earned) on four hits over 1.1 innings. Tampa Bay signed right-hander Craig Kimbrel to a one-year deal and will have him take over Scholtens' spot on the 26-man active roster and in the bullpen.

  • Rays' Jesse Scholtens: Surrenders walk-off homer

Scholtens was charged with a blown save and dropped to 5-3 on the season in Monday's 9-7 loss to the Orioles in 13 innings after yielding five runs (three earned) on four hits across 1.1 frames. He struck out one batter. Monday marked the shortest outing of the season for Scholtens, who had covered at least three innings in each of his previous eight appearances while serving as a starter or bulk reliever. He entered the game in the bottom of the 12th and was unable to protect the Rays' one-run lead, as Colton Cowser began the inning at second base and then came around to score on a fielder's choice. Scholtens then took a two-run lead into the bottom of the 13th, but after the Orioles tied the game on an RBI double and sacrifice fly, the right-hander surrendered a two-run walk-off home run to Cowser. With the Rays recently getting Steven Matz back from the injured list to fill out their rotation, Scholtens appears set to handle a more traditional bullpen role moving forward.

  • Rays' Jesse Scholtens: Nabs win in long relief

Scholtens (5-2) picked up the win Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk over four innings of relief in a 5-3 victory over the Orioles. He struck out four. Steven Matz was activated from the IL earlier in the day to get the start, but he wound up working in tandem with Scholtens as each pitcher tossed four innings. The right-hander pocketed the decision when the Rays rallied for four runs in the bottom of the eighth. It's not clear if the duo will continue to piggyback, or if Tampa Bay will now shift to a six-man rotation. Scholtens has been effective however he's been deployed this season, and over eight appearances (two starts) he sports a 3.22 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 29:11 K:BB through 36.1 innings.

  • Rays' Jesse Scholtens: Follows Seymour, earns win

Scholtens (4-2) earned the win against the Marlins on Friday, allowing one run on five hits while striking out four across five innings. He did not issue a walk. Ian Seymour served as the Rays' opener Friday and pitched in the first two innings before Scholtens took over. Scholtens was in control for most of his outing, with his lone blemish coming in the sixth inning, when he yielded a solo homer to Jakob Marsee. It was the first time since April 20 against the Reds that Scholtens completed five-plus frames, and he sits at a 3.06 ERA and 1.14 WHIP across 32.1 innings this season. He's lined up to face the Orioles at home next week, and it wouldn't be surprising to see Scholtens operate in a bulk-relief role again.

  • Rays' Jesse Scholtens: Allows two homers in loss

Scholtens (3-2) took the loss against the Red Sox on Friday, allowing two runs on two hits and four walks with four strikeouts over 4.2 innings. Scholtens limited the Red Sox to just two hits, though both were home runs. It was still an improvement from the five-run loss he took in his only other start of the season April 20, and the 32-year-old has now yielded two earned runs or fewer in five of six outings while working mostly in bulk relief. Overall, he owns a 3.29 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 21:10 K:BB across 27.1 innings. If he draws another start, it would likely come in a road matchup against the Blue Jays next week.

  • Rays' Jesse Scholtens: Start on tap Friday

Scholtens is listed as the Rays' probable starting pitcher for Friday's game in Boston, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Scholtens piggybacked Griffin Jax his last time out, but the Rays have elected to separate the two pitchers during this turn through the rotation. Even with Steven Matz (elbow) going on the injured list, it's unclear if Jax or Scholtens will be in line for long looks as starters. Mason Englert (forearm) will be stretched out now that he's off the IL, and Joe Boyle (elbow) could reclaim a starting gig once he's activated, which is expected to happen later this month.

  • Rays' Jesse Scholtens: Earns win in bulk-relief role

Scholtens (3-1) earned the win against the Giants on Saturday, allowing one run on four hits while striking out three across three innings. He did not issue a walk. For a second consecutive game, Griffin Jax served as the Rays' opener while Scholtens followed. Jax set up Scholtens for success after tossing 2.2 scoreless innings, and the latter was effective on the mound himself, with his lone blemish coming in the sixth inning after he yielded an RBI double to Rafael Devers. Following Saturday's outing, Scholtens sits at a 3.18 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 17:6 K:BB across 22.2 innings. He's lined up to face the Red Sox on the road next week, and it wouldn't be surprising to see Jax serve as the opener for that contest.

  • Rays' Jesse Scholtens: Picks up win against Minnesota

Scholtens (2-1) earned the win against the Twins on Sunday, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out one batter across 4.1 innings. Griffin Jax served as the Rays' opener for Sunday's game, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings before handing the reins over to Scholtens. The latter kept the Twins off the board from the third to the sixth inning before yielding a two-run home run to Brooks Lee, but those were the only runs that Scholtens and the rest of the Rays' pitching staff yielded in the win. Scholtens now sits at a 3.20 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 14:6 K:BB across 19.2 innings this season. He's tentatively lined up to face the Giants next weekend, though it's unclear whether he'll get the start or follow Jax.

  • Rays' Jesse Scholtens: Tagged for five runs in loss

Scholtens (1-1) took the loss Monday versus the Reds after allowing five runs on seven hits and no walks across 5.2 innings. He struck out six. After surrendering two runs during the opening frame, Scholtens settled down pretty well with just one run allowed over the next four innings, but he was unable to make it through the sixth and gave up two more runs on two hits and a hit-by-pitch. The right-hander entered Monday's contest with 9.2 scoreless frames though his first two outings of the campaign, so he should have a decent chance of sticking in Tampa Bay's banged-up rotation. Scholtens has a 2.93 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 13:3 K:BB through three appearances and tentatively lines up to pitch against the Twins this weekend.

  • Rays' Jesse Scholtens: Drawing start Monday

Scholtens will be the Rays' starting pitcher in Monday's contest against the Reds, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Scholtens had been expected to take the ball Monday in some form, and the Rays have decided to deploy him as a traditional starter rather than a bulk reliever. The right-hander's first two appearances this season came in bulk relief, and he's fared well in tossing a combined 9.2 shutout innings with a 7:3 K:BB.

  • Rays' Jesse Scholtens: Tasked with bulk-relief role

Scholtens is slated to work in bulk relief behind opening pitcher Cole Sulser in Wednesday's game against the White Sox, Ryan Bass of Rays.tv reports. Initially tabbed to make his first MLB start since the 2023 season, Scholtens will instead continue to work out of the bullpen Wednesday while he essentially takes over the rotation spot of Joe Boyle, who was placed on the 15-day injured list last week due to a right elbow strain. With Boyle facing an uncertain timeline for a return and with Ryan Pepiot (hip) recently getting shuttled to the 60-day IL, Scholtens could have some staying power in the rotation if he performs up to snuff. The 32-year-old righty sparkled in long relief in his 2026 Rays debut last Wednesday against the Cubs, striking out four batters while allowing five baserunners over 4.2 scoreless frames.

  • Rays' Jesse Scholtens: Entering rotation Wednesday

Scholtens is slated to start Wednesday's game against the White Sox in Chicago. The 32-year-old righty will be making his first start in the majors since 2023, facing off against the team with whom he initially broke into the big leagues. He'll be taking over the rotation spot that previously belonged to Joe Boyle (elbow), who was placed on the injured list last week. Scholtens' lone prior appearance with Tampa Bay came against the Cubs last Wednesday, when he struck out four over 4.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

  • Rays' Jesse Scholtens: Back with Tampa Bay

The Rays recalled Scholtens from Triple-A Durham on Saturday. Scholtens was called up by the Rays on Wednesday to serve in a long-relief role against the Cubs the same day, and he allowed four hits and one walk while striking out four across 4.2 scoreless innings. He was optioned to the minors Thursday, but he's back with the big club after Joe Boyle (elbow) was placed on the 15-day injured list. Scholtens has starting experience between the minors and majors and could see some spot starts in Tampa Bay's rotation for as long as Boyle is sidelined.

  • Rays' Jesse Scholtens: Optioned to Durham

The Rays optioned Scholtens to Triple-A Durham on Thursday, Ryan Bass of Rays.tv reports. The 32-year-old righty was recalled from Triple-A on Wednesday to give Tampa Bay an extra bullpen arm while Drew Rasmussen was away on paternity leave. Scholtens delivered a strong performance with the Rays, firing 4.2 shutout innings against the Cubs on Wednesday, but his stint in the majors will last just 24 hours, suggesting that Rasmussen will rejoin the team to start against the Yankees on Friday.

  • Rays' Jesse Scholtens: Recalled to big leagues

The Rays recalled Scholtens from Triple-A Durham on Wednesday. Scholtens will give the club an extra bullpen arm while Drew Rasmussen is away on paternity leave. The 32-year-old Scholtens got into two games for the Rays last season, allowing seven runs (five earned) over 8.1 innings but also notching 12 strikeouts.

  • Rays' Jesse Scholtens: Opening Day roster bid ends

The Rays optioned Scholtens to Triple-A Durham on Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Scholtens' bid for a spot in the Rays' Opening Day bullpen has come to an end after he surrendered four earned runs on four hits and two walks over 4.1 innings in Grapefruit League play. The 31-year-old righty has previously made 28 appearances (11 starts) with the White Sox between the 2023 and 2025 seasons, but it's unclear whether the Rays plan to use him in the rotation or out of the bullpen at Triple-A Durham to begin the upcoming campaign.

  • Rays' Jesse Scholtens: Called up Saturday

Scholtens was recalled from Triple-A Durham on Saturday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Scholtens, who was claimed off waivers by Tampa Bay on Aug. 4 after he was designated for assignment by the White Sox, has a 4.13 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 43:9 K:BB in 32.2 innings across seven starts for the Bulls. The 31-year-old righty hasn't pitched in the majors since 2023, when he logged a 5.29 ERA and 1.53 WHIP in 85 innings for the White Sox. He'll likely work as a low-leverage reliever capable of getting more than three outs.

  • Rays' Jesse Scholtens: Scooped up by Rays

The Rays claimed Scholtens off waivers from the White Sox on Monday and optioned him to Triple-A Durham. Scholtens didn't pitch at all in 2024 and has been limited to 10 appearances (eight starts) in 2025 in the minors after recovering from Tommy John surgery. The 31-year-old has collected a 5.25 ERA and 30:12 K:BB over 36 innings this season and will likely slot into Durham's rotation.

  • White Sox's Jesse Scholtens: Removed from rehab assignment

The White Sox pulled Scholtens off his minor-league rehab assignment after he experienced discomfort in his surgically repaired right elbow following his most recent start June 4 with Triple-A Charlotte, MLB.com reports. Before being shut down, Scholtens had compiled a 5.96 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 15:9 K:BB in 22.2 innings across his six rehab starts between Charlotte and High-A Winston-Salem. Given that Scholtens underwent Tommy John surgery last February, the White Sox are likely to proceed cautiously with the right-hander before sending him back out on a rehab assignment. Scholtens' lone big-league action previously came with the White Sox back in 2023, when he submitted a 5.29 ERA in 85 innings over 26 appearances (11 starts).

  • White Sox's Jesse Scholtens: Hits five innings in rehab start

Scholtens (elbow) struck out two and allowed three earned runs on five hits and no walks over five innings in a rehab start Wednesday with Triple-A Charlotte. Scholtens tossed 69 pitches in the outing and appears to be stretched out enough to handle a traditional starter's role, but it's unclear if the White Sox will be keen on including him in the rotation once he's activated from the 60-day injured list. While working his way back from March 1, 2024 Tommy John surgery, Scholtens hasn't looked particularly sharp during his minor-league rehab assignments. Over six starts between Charlotte and High-A Winston-Salem, Scholtens owns a 5.96 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 15:9 K:BB in 22.2 innings.
