It was a tough start to the spring for Kirby in his first Cactus League outing. The right-hander gave up a two-out run on a Lenyn Sosa double in the first inning before he was charged with two more runs after departing with one out in the second. Kirby is looking to rebound from an up-and-down 2025 campaign in which he posted a career-worst 4.21 ERA with a 1.19 WHIP and 137:29 K:BB across 23 regular-season starts (126 innings).

• Mariners' George Kirby: Takes no-decision in Game 5

  Kirby didn't factor into the decision in Game 5 of the ALDS versus Detroit on Friday, allowing one earned run on three hits while striking out six batters over five-plus innings. He did not issue a walk. Kerry Carpenter managed two singles against Kirby, but the rest of Detroit's offense was unable to find any success against the 27-year-old righty through the first five innings. Kirby came back out to start the sixth but was immediately pulled after giving up a leadoff double to Javier Baez, who scored on a home run from Carpenter during the ensuing at-bat. Because the Mariners were able to prevail over the Tigers after a 15-inning marathon, Kirby will have the ability to make at least one more appearance in the postseason -- likely in Game 3 or 4 of the ALCS against Toronto.

Kirby may not want to stop by Williamsport again any time soon, as he had arguably his worst start of the season in this contest. He walked a season-high three batters for the fourth time this year, and the seven runs allowed also represented his most in any outing in 2025. That was enough to end his four-start winning streak. Kirby is now at a 4.22 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 94:23 K:BB through 89.2 innings over 16 starts. The 23 walks represent his most in any year of his four-year career, which is concerning given he's seen his lightest workload this season due to injuries. Kirby will try to right the ship in a home matchup versus the Athletics for his next start.

Though he got knocked around a bit Friday, Kirby was able to push his pitch count up to 64 and reached 97.5 miles per hour with his fastball. The Mariners haven't officially commented on Kirby's next steps, but Adam Jude of The Seattle Times notes that the right-hander could return from the IL to make his season debut with Seattle in his next outing. The 27-year-old has been sticking to a five-day rest schedule during his rehab assignment, so if he's activated during the upcoming week, he would likely line up to take the hill Thursday in Houston.
