Phillies' Nick Nelson: Joining big-league club
The Phillies recalled Nelson from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday.
The right-hander was optioned to the minors late in camp but will join the major-league club Sunday since Luis Ortiz (ankle) is headed to the injured list. Nelson made just one appearance for the Phillies last season and should fill a low-leverage role, likely as a long reliever, now that he's up in the majors.

Phillies' Nick Nelson: Sent to minor-league camp
The Phillies optioned Nelson to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Wednesday.
Nelson was called up by the Phillies for the final game of the regular season last year and allowed one run over 5.1 innings, but he's set to begin 2024 at Triple-A after he posted a 6.23 ERA during spring training. The right-hander had a 4.35 ERA in 20 starts for Lehigh Valley in 2023 and may need a better showing in 2024 to have a chance of being called up.

Phillies' Nick Nelson: Nabs win as bulk reliever
Nelson (1-0) allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out three over 5.1 innings to earn the win over the Mets on Sunday.
Nelson handled a bulk assignment after Matt Strahm opened the game with a perfect first inning. The only run on Nelson's line was a Tim Locastro solo home run in the third inning. This was Nelson's only appearance in the majors this year, and it's likely the 27-year-old right-hander won't be included in the Phillies' postseason plans.

Phillies' Nick Nelson: To follow opener
Nelson will be called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley serve as the bulk reliever behind opener Matt Strahm in Sunday's game against the Mets, Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.
Initial reports suggested Nelson would start Sunday's regular-season finale, but he'll instead work as a primary pitcher out of the bullpen, which sets him up better to pick up a win. The right-hander has yet to pitch at the big-league level in 2023 after posting a 4.35 ERA and 1.48 WHIP with a 75:42 K:BB across 97.1 frames with Lehigh Valley.

Phillies' Nick Nelson: To start season finale
Nelson will be called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to start Sunday's game against the Mets, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
The Phillies will be the fourth seed in the National League regardless of what happens over the weekend, but they're nonetheless tasked with recording 27 extra outs thanks to Saturday's doubleheader. The team is sensibly holding back its best arms for the postseason, so it will be the unheralded pair of Nelson and Michael Plassmeyer who make the final two starts of the regular season. Nelson owns a 5.38 ERA in 103.2 career major-league innings, none of which have come in 2023.

Phillies' Nick Nelson: Activated off minor-league IL
Nelson (hamstring) was activated from the injured list Friday at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, Tom Housenick of The Morning Call reports.
Nelson is serving as the starting pitcher for Lehigh Valley on Friday night against the Triple-A affiliate of the Mets. He wound up missing nearly a full month of action due to a left hamstring strain -- his second left hamstring strain of 2023. The 27-year-old has posted a 1.25 ERA in 21.2 minor-league innings this season when healthy.

Phillies' Nick Nelson: Injures hamstring Saturday
Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Nelson suffered a left hamstring injury during his start Saturday with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.
Nelson previously opened the season on the Phillies' injured list due to a left hamstring strain before he was activated May 4 and optioned to the minors. After making three consecutive outings for Double-A Reading, Nelson moved into the Triple-A rotation Saturday and gave up one run over four innings, but the hamstring issue resulted in his day ending early. The extent of Nelson's injury isn't yet known, but it wouldn't be surprising if he was forced to miss at least one turn through Lehigh Valley's rotation.

Phillies' Nick Nelson: Activated and optioned
Nelson (hamstring) was activated from the 15-day injured list Thursday and optioned to Double-A Reading.
Nelson is fully recovered from the left hamstring strain that he suffered in mid-March, but the Phillies don't have a spot for him right now on their active roster. He had been getting stretched out for a starting role on his minor-league rehab assignment, so he'll likely step into Reading's rotation.

Phillies' Nick Nelson: Stretching out on rehab assignment
Nelson (hamstring) made the fourth appearance of his rehab assignment Tuesday with Double-A Reading, tossing five innings and striking out four while allowing an unearned run on six hits and no walks.
Nelson has made all but four of his 69 career MLB appearances as a reliever, but the Phillies have been getting him stretched out a starter since he began his rehab assignment April 18. He's scheduled to make another rehab start Sunday, likely with either Reading or Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The Phillies don't have a rotation spot available for him at the moment, so Nelson will likely be optioned to Triple-A once his 30-day rehab window closes and he's officially activated from the 15-day injured list.

Nelson (hamstring) was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to March 27.

Phillies' Nick Nelson: Shut down with hamstring strain
Nelson was diagnosed Wednesday with a moderate left hamstring strain, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.
It doesn't sound like a huge long-term concern, but Nelson will be shut down for a bit and might run out of time to get fully ramped up for the beginning of the 2023 regular season. The 27-year-old right-hander had been projected for a swingman role out of the gate in Philly.
