Adael Amador is a better fantasy prospect than one would guess based on his 2024 surface stats. The 21-year-old second baseman slashed .230/.343/.376, good for a 111 wRC+, in 100 games at Double-A and hit .171 with one extra-base hit in 10 big-league games. He didn't show any signs of weakness prior to reaching Double-A, and things were quite ugly early in the year (.456 OPS in first 31 games), but Amador righted the ship and slashed .260/.354/.461 with 14 home runs and 20 steals in his final 68 games. His 19.3 percent strikeout rate and 13.6 percent walk rate are very strong marks for a player his age at Double-A. Amador doesn't hit the ball particularly hard (22.1 Hard%, 19.0 Soft% at Double-A), but his command of the zone and quality rate of contact should allow him to hit 10-20 home runs during his peak seasons. The big selling point is that he could hit for a very high average (thanks in part to Coors Field) while stealing 20-plus bases and potentially hitting first or second in the lineup. The Rockies brought in Thairo Estrada to be the short-term answer at second base, but Amador could displace him this summer.

  • Rockies' Adael Amador: Headed to Triple-A

    The Rockies optioned Amador to Triple-A Albuquerque on Wednesday. Amador surprisingly made the jump from Double-A Hartford to the majors last June, but he slashed just .171/.194/.200 over 10 games with the Rockies before being shut down with a right oblique strain. Once healthy, he was optioned back to Hartford, where he finished the season with a .227/.341/.373 slash line to go with 14 home runs and 35 stolen bases across 453 plate appearances. Though the Rockies non-tendered Brendan Rodgers in November, the team brought in Thairo Estrada on a one-year deal later in the offseason, and he projects to open the season as Colorado's everyday second baseman. However, given the minimal investment in Estrada, the Rockies likely won't hesitate to open up a full-time role for Amador once the organization is confident that he's ready for another look in the big leagues.

Amador has been playing in rehab games with Hartford while working his way back from a right oblique strain, and he will remain with the Yard Goats now that he's made a full recovery.     Amador is slashing .138/.312/.149 with zero home runs, 12 steals and more walks (19) than strikeouts (17) in 25 games for Double-A Hartford. Coming into the year, Amador was seen as one of the best pure hitters in the minors, so it's a bit jarring to see his batting average sitting at .138 through the first five weeks of the season. Perhaps more concerning though, is Amador's complete lack of power, as his .171 BABIP and overly patient approach largely explain his low batting average. Amador's 20.6 percent hard-hit rate and 63.2 percent groundball rate are very troubling marks. He is playing half his games in Hartford, which is essentially a neutral hitting environment, after getting to play half his High-A games at the very hitter-friendly park in Spokane, which helped him slug .514 in 54 High-A games last year.

Amador was named Player of the Week in the California League on Monday after he hit .500 with two doubles, four home runs and seven RBI across 30 plate appearances from April 26 to May 1. He has maintained a .295 ISO and .494 wOBA to go along with a 16.8 percent walk rate while only striking out at a 12.6 percent clip. Amador has been regarded as a polished prospect with a lesser ceiling, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see some of his power production fade, but his start to the season has been worthy of attention.
