Alvarez will undergo surgery in the coming days to repair a sprained UCL in his right thumb, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Alvarez suffered the injury in late August, but he elected to delay surgery until the offseason and returned to play in early September. The operation could delay Alvarez's offseason workouts a bit, but it should not affect his availability for the beginning of spring training.

He'll give way to Luis Torrens behind the plate Sunday after starting at catcher in the first two games of the series. Alvarez has gone 8-for-25 (.320 average) with two home runs in his last seven games.

It appeared at first glance that Alvarez was hit on the elbow by a 100-mph sinker from Bradgley Rodriguez, but Mendoza clarified that it was Alvarez's triceps. Alvarez was in a considerable amount of pain after taking a 100-mph sinker from Bradgley Rodriguez off his elbow in the eighth inning and was immediately replaced by a pinch runner. If Alvarez needs to miss any time, Hayden Senger would be forcing to take on starting duties with Luis Torrens (forearm) already on the shelf.
