The Blue Jays optioned Fitzgerald to Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday.

Blue Jays' Tyler Fitzgerald: Called up Tuesday
The Blue Jays recalled Fitzgerald from Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old was acquired from the Giants over the weekend and will quickly join the big-league roster with Addison Barger (ankle) landing on the injured list. Fitzgerald will provide some depth as a utility man but shouldn't be expected to receive regular playing time while up with the Blue Jays.

Blue Jays' Tyler Fitzgerald: Traded to Jays
The Blue Jays acquired Fitzgerald from the Giants on Saturday in exchange for cash and optioned him to Triple-A Buffalo.
Fitzgerald was DFA'd by the Giants in late March, but moving to Toronto will allow him to remain on a 40-man roster. Regression hit the 28-year-old hard last season, as he posted a .605 OPS across 243 plate appearances after finishing 2024 with an .831 OPS. He's already off to an 0-for-12 start in Triple-A this year, but his defensive versatility will help keep him in consideration for a return to the majors.

Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: DFA'd by San Francisco
The Giants designated Fitzgerald for assignment Monday.
The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of trade acquisition Dylan Smith. Fitzgerald flashed upside with the Giants in 2024 with a .831 OPS in 96 games, but he stumbled to a .606 OPS last season while spending a large chunk of the year in the minors. Fitzgerald has some pop and speed, so there could be interest in him via waivers, but a 30.4 percent strikeout rate in the majors is a concern.

Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Optioned to Sacramento
The Giants optioned Fitzgerald to Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday, Evan Webeck of the California Post reports.
Fitzgerald's performance dropped dramatically last season, as he finished the year with a .217/.278/.327 slash line after having posted an .831 OPS the year prior. His offensive woes have followed him into spring training, so the Giants will send him to Triple-A to get back on track.

Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Competing for utility role
Fitzgerald started at shortstop and went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's 5-4 Cactus League win over the Guardians, and he's competing for a utility role ahead of Opening Day, Maria Guardado of MLB.com reports.
While Casey Schmitt and Christian Koss appear more likely to begin the 2026 campaign in utility roles, Fitzgerald remains an option for San Francisco. However, the 28-year-old hasn't made a strong case for himself at the plate this spring, slashing .154/.154/.385 with six RBI, three doubles and two runs scored across 26 plate appearances in 13 games. Fitzgerald opened the 2025 campaign as the club's starting second baseman but had a down season and spent significant time with Triple-A Sacramento, where he could begin this season.

Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Goes deep in win
Fitzgerald went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 7-1 victory over the Rays.
The 27-year-old filled in for Casey Schmitt (forearm) at second base for the second consecutive contest and made the most of it. Fitzgerald cracked a 398-foot solo shot off Tampa Bay reliever Mason Englert in the seventh to go back-to-back with Drew Gilbert. After a breakout rookie campaign in 2024, Fitzgerald has struggled with a .220/.278/.335 slash line, four homers, nine steals, 19 runs scored and 14 RBI across 233 plate appearances this season. He should continue to play a starting role in San Francisco while Schmitt is out.

Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Back in majors
The Giants recalled Fitzgerald from Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Fitzgerald has started exclusively at second base with the major-league team this season. However, he played two games in right field after being optioned to Sacramento on July 9 and could see time there with San Francisco this time around. After the demotion, the 27-year-old slashed .250/.333/.346 with two home runs and 28 strikeouts across 117 plate appearances. With his promotion Tuesday, the Giants optioned Carson Whisenhunt to Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move.

Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Goes yard Sunday
Fitzgerald went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 6-2 win over the Athletics.
Fitzgerald gave the Giants a little more breathing room with his eighth-inning homer. He's gone just 4-for-20 (.200) over six games since he was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento, though he has two doubles and a homer in that span. Overall, he's at a .227/.287/.333 slash line with three homers, 13 RBI, 18 runs scored, nine stolen bases, 10 doubles and one triple over 63 games. Fitzgerald is still seeing a starting role at second base, but with Matt Chapman back from the injured list, Brett Wisely could be in contention for more time at second base until Casey Schmitt (hand) is ready to return as well.
