Giants' Miguel Mendez: Sent to San Francisco
The Giants acquired Mendez and shortstop Joniel Hernandez from the Padres on Monday in exchange for left-hander Robbie Ray, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
San Diego added Mendez to its 40-man roster over the winter, but the 24-year-old righty has yet to pitch above the Double-A level and probably won't be a realistic candidate to make his MLB debut until 2027. Mendez turned in a 4.93 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 38:17 K:BB in 34.2 innings over 11 starts with Double-A San Antonio this season before landing on the 7-day injured list June 27 due to an unspecified injury. He was cleared to begin a rehab assignment in the Midwest League last week and could soon be ready to come off the IL and report to Double-A Richmond with his new organization.

Padres' Miguel Mendez: Sent to Double-A
Mendez was optioned to Double-A San Antonio on Thursday.
Mendez made two appearances with the Padres during spring training, giving up six runs on five hits and four walks while striking out three batters over two innings. The right-handed pitcher is one of San Diego's top prospects, but he'll need some time in the minor leagues to refine his craft before potentially getting a shot with the big-league squad.

Padres' Miguel Mendez: Joins 40-man roster
The Padres selected Mendez's contract from Double-A San Antonio on Tuesday.
The right-hander is one of San Diego's top prospects, so his addition to the 40-man roster was to be expected ahead of the Rule 5 Draft. Mendez posted a 1.78 ERA and 11.2 K/9 over 75.2 frames in the lower minors during 2025 but surrendered 20 earned runs over six late-season starts after being promoted to Double-A.

Padres' Miguel Mendez: Struggling since promotion
Mendez has a 7.88 ERA, 1.75 WHIP and 22:14 K:BB in 16 innings across four starts for Double-A San Antonio.
In a system that has been ravaged by trades, Mendez is one of the most talented prospects remaining, despite his poor results since getting promoted to Double-A on Aug. 1. The skinny 6-foot-2 righty's fastball regularly touches triple digits and he has one of the best sliders in the minors, but poor control may push him to relief eventually. Mendez, who turned 23 in July, logged a 1.32 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 70:24 K:BB in 61.1 innings at High-A Fort Wayne earlier this season.
