Pelicans' Jose Alvarado: Takes on 13-minute role in return
Alvarado (oblique) tallied six points (2-5 FG, 2-5 3Pt), five rebounds and one assist across 13 minutes Sunday in the Pelicans' 104-95 win over the Spurs.
Following a nine-game absence due to an oblique strain, Alvarado made his return to action Sunday and reclaimed a spot on the Pelicans' second unit. When healthy, Alvarado has mostly served as the top backup at point guard to Jeremiah Fears, but the two played alongside one another off the bench while interim head coach James Borrego dropped Jordan Poole from the rotation and ran out a starting five lacking a true point guard. Borrego could shake up the lineup at some point, but Alvarado seems likely to continue operating off the bench and could struggle to regain a consistent 20-plus-minute role while the Pelicans have all their key contributors available, save for Dejounte Murray (Achilles).

Alvarado has already missed three games in a row due to a left oblique strain, and the Pelicans seemingly want to give him even more time to get the issue resolved. The NBA issued Alvarado a two-game suspension engaging in a physical altercation with the Suns' Mark Williams during Saturday's 123-114 loss to Phoenix, Shams Charania of ESPN reports.
Alvarado was ejected from Saturday's contest after throwing a punch at Williams following an exchange ignited by a screen. The veteran point guard will miss games Monday against the Knicks and Wednesday in Chicago before he's eligible to return to action Friday against the Trail Blazers.

Alvarado chipped in 18 points (7-11 FG, 4-7 3Pt), six assists, three rebounds and two steals over 31 minutes during Tuesday's 116-112 win over the Hornets.
Alvarado was back to his best Tuesday, delivering easily his best performance of the season. After failing to score more than five points in each of the first five games, an 18-point performance was just what the doctor ordered. We have seen games like this from Alvarado in the past, making him someone to at least keep an eye on moving forward. With that said, managers are within their rights to be skeptical, given that these performances are often outliers when viewed as part of the bigger picture.
