NFL preseason Week 2 takeaways: Geno Smith, Bo Nix, Jordan Love shine Friday

Happy preseason Week 2, football diehards. The NFL is back once again with another full slate of games, and Friday's triple header provided plenty of highlights. That's a sure sign the weekend's games to come have plenty to look forward to.

Geno Smith proved you can go home again with the 35-year-old quarterback shining in his return debut with the New York Jets, the team that drafted him in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Smith completed all seven of his throws on the opening drive at the Pittsburgh Steelers for 65 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown toss to tight end Jelani Woods. Head coach Aaron Glenn pulled him after the immaculate drive. Perhaps more impressive is the Jets' defense picking off Pittsburgh Steelers preseason Week 2 starter Will Howard twice after failing to register an interception the entire 2025 season.

Jonathon Brooks, the first running back selected in the 2024 NFL Draft with the 46th overall pick in the second round by the Carolina Panthers, found the promised land in the NFL for the first time: the end zone. Brooks tore his ACL in his last season at the University of Texas in 2023, and he missed the entire 2025 NFL season with another ACL tear he suffered in 2024. He is finally back in 2026, and Brooks was able to slither his way into the end zone from a yard out at the Jacksonville Jaguars. He finished with 18 yards rushing on 5 carries, including the one-yard touchdown plunge.

The last time Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix was on a football field, he was fresh off breaking his ankle in an overtime victory over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC divisional round. He returned to action in Week 2 of the preseason against the Green Bay Packers and shined in his two drives, helping generate 10 points for Denver. Nix hit on 6 of his 9 throws for 76 yards and a touchdown, a 21-yard drop in the bucket to running back RJ Harvey on a wheel route down the right sideline.

Packers quarterback Jordan Love also played with poise at Mile High, completing five of his seven passes for 56 yards and a touchdown. He hit 2025 first-round pick wide receiver Matthew Golden on a fourth-down crosser that beat 2024 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Pat Surtain II for a gain of 20. Love found the end zone on a Texas route thrown to running back Marshawn Lloyd for the 11-yard score.

Keep up with all the action from Friday night in our live blog below.

Packers' Jordan Love hits RB Marshawn Lloyd for first career NFL TD

He sprung free on the Texas route over the middle of the field to the beat the Broncos' blitz on third down to score an 11-yard receiving touchdown. Klubnik, a dual-threat quarterback at Clemson, showed off his wheels as he scrambled his way out of a third-and-2 at his own 12 all the way out to the 28 on a 16-yard gain down the right sideline. That mobility gives New York a different flair at quarterback than the 13-year veteran in Geno Smith.

He also connected with both of the Jets' top wide receivers Garrett Wilson (one catch on one target for 10 yards) and Adonai Mitchell (two catches on two targets for 29 yards). Will Howard-led Steelers go three-and-out on Pittsburgh's opening drive

Pittsburgh began their night with consecutive runs by Jaylen Warren that netted a total of a yard before Howard sailed a third-and-9 throw just out of the reach of wide receiver Roman Wilson. The Steelers punt after just three plays, so the Jets get the ball back n their own 16 up 7-0 with 7:34 left in the first quarter.
