  • Nick Foles: Announces retirement

Foles announced his retirement from professional football Thursday via social media. Best remembered for leading Philadelphia to its first Super Bowl championship during the 2017 season and taking home the game's MVP honors in the 41-33 win over the Patriots, Foles will will officially retire as a member of the Eagles during the team's Sept. 16 home opener versus the Falcons. Selected by the Eagles in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft, Foles tied a single-game NFL record with seven passing touchdowns in a game against the Raiders in 2013 during his first stint in Philadelphia, then matched another NFL record with 25 consecutive completions in a game in 2018 during his second stint with the team. In addition to his two stints with Philadelphia, Foles also suited up for the Rams, Chiefs, Jaguars, Bears and Colts during an 11-year NFL career.

  • Nick Foles: Released by Indianapolis

The Colts released Foles on Friday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. This was always coming for Foles after the Colts added Gardner Minshew in free agency and then Anthony Richardson in the 2023 NFL Draft at No. 4 overall. The move saves Indy $2.1 million against the cap. Foles will look for backup work elsewhere after going 0-2 with a 59.5 percent completion rate, zero touchdowns and four interceptions in two starts last year.

  • Colts' Nick Foles: Won't play in finale

Foles (ribs) won't play Sunday against the Texans, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin reports. Interim coach Jeff Saturday said Foles is "really sore" after exiting the team's Week 17 loss to the Giants with a rib injury, so the veteran quarterback will sit out the regular-season finale. Sam Ehlinger will draw another start, while Matt Ryan will operate as the backup.

  • Colts' Nick Foles: Confirmed for Week 17 start

Interim head coach Jeff Saturday confirmed Foles will remain the Colts' starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Giants, James Boyd of The Athletic reports. Despite struggling mightily in his first extended action of the season in Monday's 20-3 loss to the Chargers, Foles will be awarded another start while the Colts continue to look for an answer at quarterback while the campaign winds down. Foles completed 17 of 29 pass attempts for 143 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions while taking seven sacks in the Week 16 loss. If Foles is unable to show much improvement during the upcoming weekend, Saturday could turn to Matt Ryan or second-year player Sam Ehlinger to start the Jan. 8 season finale versus the Texans.

  • Colts' Nick Foles: Set to start in Week 16

Foles will start at quarterback in Monday's game against the Chargers, JJ Stankevitz of the Colts official site reports. "I feel like Nick will give us a better chance to win these last three games," interim head coach Jeff Saturday said Wednesday. Foles will take over the reins of the Indianapolis offense for Matt Ryan, who returns to the bench after the 4-9-1 Colts surrendered a 33-point lead in last week's overtime loss to the Vikings. Though Foles' recent track record doesn't make him a comfortable starting option in leagues that start just one quarterback, he could have some utility in two-quarterback or superflex formats Week 16. Saturday said that he hasn't decided whether Ryan or Sam Ehlinger will back up Foles on Monday, while adding that Indianapolis' plan at quarterback will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis for the final three games of the season.

  • Colts' Nick Foles: Backing up Ryan on Sunday

Foles is slated to serve as the Colts' No. 2 QB against the Cowboys on Sunday, Nate Atkins of The Indianapolis Star reports. Meanhile, Sam Ehlinger is a healthy inactive, with Foles now slated to serve as Matt Ryan's backup in Week 13. Foles last attempted a regular-season pass during the 2021 season while with the Bears.

  • Colts' Nick Foles: Slides to third on depth chart

Foles (coach's decision) is a healthy inactive for Sunday's game against the Jaguars. Foles' move to the inactive list was fully expected after Mike Chappell of Fox 59 Indianapolis reported Friday that second-year signal-caller Sam Ehlinger had supplanted the veteran as the No. 2 quarterback behind Matt Ryan. Unless Ryan misses time at any point or if Ehlinger regresses in his subsequent practices, Foles looks as though he could find himself as the third option on the depth chart for the rest of the season.

  • Colts' Nick Foles: Starting Saturday's preseason game

Foles will start Saturday's preseason game against the Lions, Mike Chappell of Fox 59 News Indianapolis reports. Head coach Frank Reich added that Foles will play for about a quarter of the contest with starter Matt Ryan not playing. Both Ryan and Foles combined to play the entire first half of their first preseason game against the Bills. The veteran backup completed seven of 11 passes for 72 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Foles is the favorite to secure the No. 2 spot on the quarterback depth chart ahead of the 2022 campaign.

  • Bears' Nick Foles: Could be traded

The Bears have reportedly looked into trading Foles, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports. With the team having added fellow QB Trevor Siemian to the mix behind starter Justin Fields via free agency, it looks like Foles could be the odd man out. The 33-year-old appeared in just one game with the Bears last season and if he is dealt, he'd presumably be viewed as a backup option by his next team.

  • Bears' Nick Foles: Ends season on sidelines

Foles served as the No. 2 quarterback and didn't see the field in the Bears' 31-17 Week 18 loss to the Vikings, and he ended the season completing 24 of 35 passes for 250 yards and a touchdown in one start. Foles appeared in one game for the Bears, getting the start and leading the team to a win over the Giants. With a 36:26 TD:INT ratio over the last seven seasons, there's little reason to think he'll be a strong fantasy option for any extended period of time in the future. He'll enter the last year of his deal in 2022 as he enters his age-33 season, though it's unlikely he'll be considered more than a reliable NFL backup.

  • Bears' Nick Foles: Moves to No. 2 role

Head coach Matt Nagy said Foles will serve as the Bears' No. 2 quarterback Sunday against the Giants, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports. While both Justin Fields (ankle) and Andy Dalton (hand) were sidelined last week in Seattle, Foles stepped into a starting role in what was his first appearance of the season. The 32-year-old acquitted himself well as a starter, completing 24 of 35 attempts for 250 yards and a touchdown while committing no turnovers in the Bears' 25-24 win. Though Fields is listed as questionable but not expected to play this week after managing nothing more than limited participation in practice, Foles will move down a spot on the depth chart after Dalton received a clean bill of health.

  • Bears' Nick Foles: Backing up Fields on Sunday

Foles will serve as Justin Fields' backup Sunday at Green Bay with Andy Dalton (hand) inactive, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports. Despite injuries to both Fields and Dalton this season, Foles hasn't found his way onto the field through 12 games. On this occasion, Fields is returning from a two-game absence due to multiple small rib fractures, while Dalton is dealing with an injury to his non-throwing hand.

  • Bears' Nick Foles: Inactive against Raiders

Foles (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Raiders, Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune reports. With Andy Dalton (knee) healthy enough to return from a two-game absence, Foles slips back to third on the quarterback depth chart. Foles has yet to take a snap this season.

  • Bears' Nick Foles: Moves up to No. 2

Foles will be Chicago's backup quarterback for Sunday's game at Cleveland, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. With Andy Dalton (knee) week-to-week, Justin Fields is getting his first NFL start. Foles steps up from the inactive list to the No. 2 spot.

  • Bears' Nick Foles: Sitting Sunday

Foles (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game versus the Bengals. Like Week 1, Foles is a healthy scratch while Andy Dalton gets the start under center and rookie Justin Fields is available for the occasional rep at QB.

  • Bears' Nick Foles: Two TD passes Saturday

Foles completed 10 of 13 passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's preseason win over the Titans. He played the second half for Chicago after Justin Fields was under center in the first half, and Foles engineered two long scoring drives to sew up the victory, finding Jesper Horsted with both his TD passes. If teams looking for a stronger backup option at quarterback were waiting to see what Foles was still capable of before pulling the trigger on a trade, he put together an impressive audition reel in Chicago's preseason finale, even if it did come against second- and third-string defenders. If he isn't flipped, the Bears will face a tough choice between keeping a hugely expensive No. 3 QB or swallowing a big cap hit to cut him loose.

  • Bears' Nick Foles: Potential trade candidate

Entering camp as the No. 3 quarterback, Foles would be a logical trade candidate if another team suffers an injury during training camp, Jeff Dickerson of ESPN reports. After throwing 10 touchdown passes in nine games last year and throwing 35 touchdowns over 39 starts since 2015, Foles would likely be a veteran backup if dealt, and if he was able to move back into a starting role, his value would primarily be in leagues that start two quarterbacks.

  • Bears' Nick Foles: Clear for Week 13

Foles (hip) is active for Sunday's game against the Lions. Foles came into the morning labeled as questionable, but full practice sessions for the 31-year-old Thursday and Friday hinted at a likely Week 13 return. He wasn't able to suit up last Sunday night against the Packers and will now revert to a backup role for another divisional showdown against Detroit.

  • Bears' Nick Foles: Puts in full practice

Foles (hip) was a full practice participant Thursday. After sitting out last week's loss to the Packers with the hip injury, Foles looks poised to play Sunday against the Lions, but he won't be returning to action in a starting role with head coach Matt Nagy naming Mitch Trubisky as the team's Week 13 signal-caller. Per Larry Mayer of the Bears' official site, Nagy said he expects Foles to be healthy enough to handle the No. 2 duties this weekend, a notion that would be supported by the Bears not adding another quarterback to the roster before Sunday. Whomever starts for the Bears in Week 14 and beyond will likely hinge on how Trubisky performs against Detroit.

  • Bears' Nick Foles: Back at practice

Foles (hip) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice. Foles was unable to practice in any capacity before being deemed inactive of last Sunday's loss in Green Bay, so it's encouraging to see him back on the field in at least a limited fashion. Coach Matt Nagy has already named Mitchell Trubisky the starting quarterback for Week 13, but it's possible that Foles could be available as the No. 2 option over Tyler Bray in the Bears' matchup with the Lions.
