Broncos' Shamar Stephen: Agrees to deal with Denver
Stephen agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Broncos, Aric DiLalla of the team's official site reports.
Stephen was cut by the Vikings in March after starting all 16 games for the team last season. The 30-year-old defensive tackle made 34 tackles with half a sack during that time. Broncos starting nose tackle Mike Purcell is battling a Lisfranc injury in his foot, so Stephen could wind up in a starting role if that injury lingers into the 2021 season. Otherwise, Stephen may need to settle for rotational duties.

Shamar Stephen: Let go by Vikings
Stephen was released by the Vikings on Tuesday.
Stephen has played six of his seven NFL seasons with the Vikings and has career totals of 173 tackles and 4.5 sacks. The 30-year-old interior defensive lineman will hope to latch on with another team in free agency.

Vikings' Shamar Stephen: Gets start at nose tackle
Stephen started at nose tackle and had two total tackles in Sunday's loss to Green Bay. He also had two QB hurries, according to Pro Football Focus.
Stephen had the best performance amid a defense that struggled to generate any pass rush and was mediocre against the run. Stephen will be a key run stuffer for the Vikings and isn't likely to generate more than a sack or two.

After spending the 2018 campaign with Seattle, Stephen returned to the team that drafted him in 2014 and assumed a starting role alongside Linval Joseph. The 28-year-old Stephen is a valued run stopper and averaged 39.2 defensive snaps per game. He's under contract for two more years and should retain a regular role in Minnesota's line rotation in 2020.

Stephen (knee) said Tuesday that he expects to play in Saturday's playoff game against the 49ers, Andrew Krammer of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Stephen was listed as a full participant for Tuesday's practice estimation, serving as another good sign for his chances to suit up Saturday. The veteran sustained the injury during last week's game against the Saints but it appears that it won't keep him out of game action.

Coach Mike Zimmer previously said the 28-year-old wouldn't be out long, so his relatively quick return isn't much of a surprise. Stephen suited up in 15 games for the Seahawks last season, making 25 tackles (11 solo) and two sacks. The familiarity -- the Vikings drafted Stephen in 2014 -- could've led to the signing. The 29-year-old should compete for a starting role on the defensive line with Sheldon Richardson likely on his way out of Minnesota.

After playing four years with the Vikings, Stephen signed a one-year deal with Seattle before the 2018 campaign. He posted his lowest tackle total in a full season since his rookie year in 2014. Stephen will become an unrestricted free agent in March, and if he sticks with the Seahawks, he'll face substantial competition from Poona Ford for a starting role on the defensive line.
