Panthers' Darren Waller: Goes for 28 yards in Week 1
Waller secured both of his targets for 28 yards in the Panthers' 59-37 loss to the Bears on Sunday.
Waller actually had a one-yard touchdown called back on a penalty on the Panthers' opening drive. Carolina used all three of Tommy Tremble, Mitchell Evans and Waller pretty heavily against Chicago, and both Tremble and Waller each ran 18 routes. Waller isn't going to be a full-time player, but it's clear he's going to be featured in the scoring area. He's a touchdown-or-bust fantasy bet most weeks and gets a road date with the Falcons next Sunday.

Waller had been preparing to play Week 1, and he will indeed occupy a spot on the active roster. It remains to be seen what role he will fill, though, as fellow tight ends Tommy Tremble, Mitchell Evans and Feleipe Franks will also be in uniform.

Panthers' Darren Waller: Preparing to play Week 1
Waller said Monday that he's practicing as if he's going to play in Sunday's game against the Bears, Steve Reed of the Associated Press reports.
Waller signed with Carolina less than a month ago and has slowly been working his way into game-ready shape. He ran with the first-team offense in practice last week and appears ready to go for the Week 1 opener. The Panthers have a host of quality tight ends, but Waller has the most fantasy appeal of the bunch as a weapon in the red zone and on third downs. He's likely a better best-ball pick than reliable weekly play in redraft fantasy formats.

Panthers' Darren Waller: Jumps into team drills Wednesday
Waller, who signed with the Panthers on Aug. 12, took part in team drills with the first-team offense Wednesday as the coaching staff looks to get him fully incorporated ahead of Week 1, Kassidy Hill of the team's official site reports.
The veteran tight end has the potential to give Bryce Young the best pass-catching option at the position the 2023 first overall pick has had in his career, but Waller is still in the midst of learning head coach Dave Canales' offensive system. Canales had good things to say about Waller's progress Wednesday, saying he'd gotten in plenty of routes versus air and looked fast while doing so. Waller suited up for only nine regular-season games with the Dolphins in 2025 after a year in retirement, but he recorded 24 receptions for 283 yards and six touchdowns on 34 targets in that span.

Coach Dave Canales indicated that Waller is not expected to suit up for Friday's preseason finale against the Texans, Anthony Rizzuti of USA Today reports.
Waller, who officially signed with the Panthers last Monday, didn't take part in the team's joint practice with the Jaguars on Wednesday and sat out Friday's ensuing preseason contest against the Jaguars. The tight end did see a couple of team reps in Monday's session, per Canales, but with the Panthers still easing Waller into the mix, it remains to be seen how much of a workload he'll see out of the gate this season.

Waller officially signed with the Panthers on Monday, at which time coach Dave Canales told Mike Kaye of ESPN.com that the tight end wasn't likely to practice fully at Wednesday's joint session with the Jaguars. Panthers' Darren Waller: Inking deal with Carolina
The Panthers are slated to sign Waller (groin) to a one-year contract , Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Waller came out of a one-year retirement last summer to join the Dolphins and appeared in nine regular-season games with Miami, registering 24 catches for 283 yards and six touchdowns as a red-zone weapon. Injuries have been Waller's downfall in recent years, and he missed considerable time last season with hip, pectoral and groin issues. His looming addition is bad news for all three of Tommy Tremble, Ja'Tavion Sanders and Mitchell Evans, who were all expected to see considerable playing time in a three-man committee at the position for the Panthers. Waller's main contributions figure to come on third downs and in the scoring area, assuming he makes the 53-man roster out of camp.
