James (finger) was a full participant in Thursday's practice.
James broke his pinky finger during the Chargers' Week 2 loss to the Raiders, but the veteran safety was on the field for Thursday's session with a cast on, per Kris Rhim of ESPN.com. James is track to play in Sunday's road game against the Bills, though it's unclear whether he will don the cast for that contest. He's logged 17 tackles (nine solo) and one pass defense through the first two games of the 2026 regular season.

James recorded 10 total tackles (seven solo) and a pass defensed in Sunday's 26-14 loss to the Cardinals.
James opened the season with a vintage performance, notching double-digit stops after having only done so twice over 16 regular-season contests in 2025. The safety was on the field for all 75 of the team's defensive snaps, and he appears to be on track to remain rather busy on the back end of the Chargers' defense again this year.

Chargers' Derwin James: Extended by Chargers
James agreed to terms Tuesday on a three-year, $75.6 million contract extension with the Chargers, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
James' extension includes $57.5 million guaranteed and an average annual value of $25.2 million, making him the highest-paid safety in league history. The 29-year-old has spent his entire seven-year career with the Chargers and is coming off yet another strong season, racking up 94 tackles (50 solo), including 2.0 sacks, and three interceptions across 16 regular-season games.
