  • Giants' Derrick Mathews: Promoted from practice squad

The Giants promoted Mathews off their practice squad Tuesday, Michael Eisen of the Giants' official site reports.

New York has lost five linebackers to injured reserve this season, so Mathews' addition will strengthen the team's numbers at that position. It's unlikely that Mathews will be called upon for significant snaps on defense if he's active for Sunday's season finale against the Redskins.

  • Derrick Mathews: Released by Packers

Mathews (concussion) was released by the Packers on Saturday.

Mathews was able to play in every preseason game despite his head injury, but he did not show enough to earn a spot on the Packers' active roster. He did snag a spot on the team's practice squad, though.

  • Packers' Derrick Mathews: Exits practice with injury

Mathews (concussion) had to leave Tuesday's practice early, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com reports.

Entering his third season, Mathews has yet to play a regular season snap, so this injury couldn't be more poorly timed. The only way onto the roster for him is with a quick recovery and stellar special teams play.

  • Derrick Mathews: Released by Packers

Mathews was released by Green Bay on Monday, Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Mathews has never played in an NFL game and was a long shot to make the Packers' roster. With the team's linebacking corps being as healthy as it is, Mathews was no longer needed as a camp player.

  • Packers' Derrick Mathews: Signs with Packers

Mathews signed with the Packers on Tuesday.

The fifth-leading tackler in University of Houston history signed onto the Redskins' practice squad halfway through last season before eventually being released by the team in May. The reason for the signing may stem from the health of Sam Barrington, who is recovering from an ankle injury.
