  • Texans' John Metchie: Three targets in win

Metchie caught all three of his targets for 33 yards in Monday's 34-10 win over Dallas. Metchie's recent workload increase receded due to the return of Nico Collins, who missed five weeks due to a hamstring injury. Metchie appears to have used Collins' absence to win the No. 3 receiver role, slotting behind Collins and Tank Dell. Metchie (39 snaps) was on the field more than Xavier Hutchinson (28) or Robert Woods (20) and has 11 receptions on 15 targets for 136 yards and one touchdown over the last four weeks. Metchie's playing time could take a hit in the coming weeks when the Texans feel comfortable giving Collins more than the 30 snaps he had Monday.

  • Texans' John Metchie III: Week 11 Waiver Priority List

Metchie is really only worth adding if Nico Collins (hamstring) remains out for the Texans, but Collins is expected to return in Week 11. That said, Metchie looked great in Week 10 against the Lions with five catches for 74 yards and a touchdown on six targets. I doubt he will get consistent targets when Collins and Tank Dell are healthy, but in deeper leagues, you should add Metchie just to see what develops for 1 percent of your remaining FAB.

  • Texans' John Metchie: Breaks out against Lions

Metchie recorded five receptions on six targets for 74 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 26-23 loss to the Lions. Metchie enjoyed the most productive game of his career and paced the Texans with 74 receiving yards. He was particularly impressive on a possession just before halftime, initially hauling in a deep 25-yard pass before capping the drive with a 15-yard touchdown reception -- the first of his career. While Nico Collins (hamstring) is likely to be back in Week 11 against the Cowboys, Metchie could have the chance to earn a larger role across the second half of the season due to the underwhelming showings from Tank Dell.

  • Texans' John Metchie: Two targets in loss

Metchie failed to catch either of his two targets in Thursday's 21-13 loss to the Jets in Week 9. With the team's top wideouts sidelined, Metchie was in line to take on a greater role, but it didn't work out that way. Houston quarterback C.J. Stroud spent much of the night running away from or getting hit by Jets defenders, which made a mess of the passing attack. Metchie, who played a season-high 50 snaps, and fellow wideout Xavier Hutchinson (59 snaps, three targets, no catches) were non-factors in the loss.

  • Texans' John Metchie: Could see increased snaps Week 9

Metchie will be one of four healthy wide receivers for the Texans heading into Thursday's game against the Jets, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. The Texans received expected bad news Tuesday when they learned that Stefon Diggs suffered a season-ending ACL tear in his right knee during this past Sunday's win over the Colts. Diggs' injury coupled with top wideout Nico Collins (hamstring) spending at least one more game on injured reserve opens the door for Metchie, Robert Woods and Xavier Hutchinson to handle expanded roles behind Tank Dell, who will temporarily settle in as the Texans' No. 1 receiver until Collins is ready to return. Metchie benefited from Diggs' early exit Sunday, drawing a season-high four targets and catching three passes for 29 yards.

  • Texans' John Metchie III: Week 9 Waiver Priority List

Stefon Diggs (knee) is lost for the season, and Nico Collins (hamstring) remains on injured reserve. That opens the door for Metchie, Robert Woods (1 percent rostered), and Xavier Hutchinson (1 percent) to step up, at least until Collins returns. Diggs was injured in Week 8 against the Colts, and Metchie had three catches for 29 yards on four targets, with two of his targets coming on the same drive Diggs was injured. Woods had two catches for 18 yards on two targets against the Colts, and Hutchinson had one catch for 19 yards on one target. All of these receivers are only worth 1 percent of your remaining FAB, and I rank them Metchie, Woods, and Hutchinson heading into Week 9 against the Jets.

  • Texans' John Metchie: Does little with extra snaps

Metchie didn't draw a target while playing 25 of the Texans' 66 snaps on offense in Sunday's 41-21 win over the Patriots. Though he was active for the third straight game and saw his highest snap share of the season with Nico Collins (hamstring) on injured reserve and with Robert Woods (foot) inactive for the contest, Metchie didn't see any involvement in the passing attack. If Woods is cleared to play Week 7 against the Packers, Metchie would likely drop to fifth in the pecking order at receiver behind Stefon Diggs, Tank Dell, Xavier Hutchinson and Woods.

  • Texans' John Metchie: Active for first time

Metchie caught his lone target for seven yards in Sunday's 24-20 win over Jacksonville. Metchie was active for the first time in four games, filling the roster spot opened up due to Tank Dell (chest) being inactive. Metchie was on the field for just nine snaps. Xavier Hutchinson (13 snaps) has held down the fifth wideout spot when all hands are healthy.

  • Texans' John Metchie: Inactive in Week 2

Metchie (coach's decision) was inactive for Week 2 against the Bears. Metchie has not suited up for either of the Texans' first two games, as it appears the coaching staff prefers Xavier Hutchinson as the fifth wideout while allotting a spot to Steven Sims as a returner.

  • Texans' John Metchie: Inactive in Week 1

Metchie (coach's decision) is inactive Week 1 against the Colts. Matchie was targeted in each of Houston's preseason contests, but when push came to shove, he was simply too far down on the depth chart in a loaded wide receiver room. With Sunday's inactive designation, it appears even the likes of Xavier Hutchinson and Steven Sims have surpassed Metchie, as both will be active for the season opener.

  • Texans' John Metchie: Finds pay dirt

Metchie caught six of seven targets for 68 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's preseason game against the Giants. Metchie had a couple of meh showings in the Hall of Fame Game and first preseason tilt, disappointing head coach DeMeco Ryans, but he responded Saturday. Metchie led the team in targets, receptions and yards as he positioned himself behind the team's top three wideouts. He's competing against Noah Brown (shoulder), Xavier Hutchinson (two of four targets, 20 yards), Steven Sims (two of two, 20 yards), Ben Skowronek (leg) and Robert Woods (zero targets, 13 snaps) for the back end of the wide receiver depth chart.

  • Texans' John Metchie: One drop, one catch Friday

Metchie caught one of two targets for four yards in Friday's 20-12 preseason win over the Steelers. Metchie dropped the first pass thrown to him and didn't appear to respond in the way head coach DeMeco Ryans wanted to see following a quiet preseason opener last week in the Hall of Fame Game. The good news for Metchie is that neither of his main competitors -- Xavier Hutchinson nor Ben Skowronek -- shined as a receiver Friday night.

  • Texans' John Metchie: Snags one of two targets

Metchie caught one of two targets for four yards in Thursday's 21-17 preseason loss to the Bears. Metchie, who was in the starting lineup, finished behind Xavier Hutchinson (six targets) and Ben Skowronek (four) as a target. Houston kept its top wide receivers out of the game, and these three figure to battle for the final two spots on the depth chart with Robert Woods and Noah Brown (undisclosed).

  • Texans' John Metchie: Needs consistency

Metchie finished the 2023 regular season with 16 catches (on 30 targets) for 158 yards over 16 games. For much of the season, which was essentially his rookie year after sitting out 2022 with acute promyelocytic leukemia, Metchie was on the bottom rungs of the depth chart. He got to show himself late in the season when injuries hit and was a big part of the playoff win over Cleveland, but Houston head coach DeMeco Ryans told Jonathan M. Alexander and Dennis Silva II of the Houston Chronicle that Metchie had an inconsistent year. "I think Metchie's had a little up and downs throughout the season, had some opportunities to make plays," Ryans said. "Some moments he made them, some he didn't." One of the organization's goals during the offseason is to build around quarterback C.J. Stroud, and Metchie will need to show consistency to force a move up the depth chart.

  • Texans' John Metchie: Good to go Saturday

Metchie (foot) doesn't carry an injury designation ahead of Saturday's divisional-round game against the Ravens. Metchie, who was listed as limited Tuesday and Wednesday, logged a full practice Thursday, which paves the way for him to face Baltimore. Given that Noah Brown (shoulder) is now on injured reserve, Metchie should have an opportunity to be a key cog in the Texans' WR corps this weekend alongside Nico Collins and Robert Woods (hip). In Houston's wild-card win over Cleveland this past Saturday, Metchie logged a 76 percent snap share while catching all three of his targets for 44 yards.

  • Texans' John Metchie: Three catches against Browns

Metchie recorded three receptions on three targets for 44 yards in Saturday's 45-14 win over the Browns. Metchie has seen a boost in role to close the regular season and in the first game of the postseason due to Houston dealing with ongoing injuries to its receiving corps. Noah Brown (shoulder) exited early in the first quarter of Saturday's win and didn't return, allowing Metchie to see three targets for the third time in his last four games. Saturday's production marked his highest yardage total of the campaign, which came primarily from a 27-yard catch late in the first quarter to set up a touchdown two plays later. If Brown remains sidelined for the Texans' divisional-round matchup, Metchie should continue to see an uptick in involvement in the offense.

  • Texans' John Metchie: Missing from practice Wednesday

Metchie didn't practice Wednesday due to an illness. Metchie was one of three Houston receivers to appear on Houston's initial Week 16 injury report, joining Nico Collins (calf) and Noah Brown (knee). However, the second-year wideout is a step behind Collins and Brown, both of whom opened the week as limited participants. Metchie will still have two more chances to log some practice reps and put himself in position to play this weekend against the Browns.

  • Texans' John Metchie: Season-high targets, snaps

Metchie caught one of five targets for six yards in Sunday's 30-6 loss to the Jets in Week 14. Metchie saw a season highs in snaps (28) and targets following the loss of Nico Collins to a calf injury early in the first quarter. The Texans were already operating without Tank Dell (lower leg) and Dalton Schultz (hamstring), and the passing game suffered. Xavier Hutchinson (41 snaps) also received an uptick in playing time behind Noah Brown and Robert Woods. Later in the contest, starting quarterback C.J. Stroud entered the NFL's concussion protocol. With injuries impacting the passing offense and the potential of Davis Mills starting in Week 15 against Tennessee, Houston could deploy a run-heavy attack.

  • Texans' John Metchie: Two grabs in Week 10

Metchie caught both his targets for 25 yards in Sunday's 30-27 win over Cincinnati. Metchie was active after getting knocked out of last week's win over Tampa Bay with injured ribs. Houston's depth wideouts -- Metchie and Xavier Hutchinson -- are getting increased reps while injuries have hit the position, but that may change in Week 11 if Nico Collins (calf) is ready to return. Metchie has caught just nine of 10 targets for 111 yards through eight games this season.

  • Texans' John Metchie: Full practice

Metchie (ribs) was a full practice participant Wednesday. Metchie made a quick recovery from the rib injury that knocked him out of Sunday's 39-37 win over Tampa Bay. He's spent most of the season as Houston's fourth or fifth wide receiver, seeing limited snaps even when Tank Dell or Robert Woods (toe) has been out of the lineup. Metchie will likely be headed for a light role on offense once again this Sunday at Cincinnati, unless both Woods and Nico Collins (calf) are able to play. Collins was a limited participant Wednesday, while Woods missed another practice.
