Colts' Seth McGowan: Eight carries in second preseason game
McGowan rushed eight times for 27 yards in Saturday's 34-6 preseason loss to the Falcons.
McGowan started for the second time in as many preseason games, but the rookie seventh-round pick didn't find much running room in the lopsided loss. DJ Giddens is working his way back from a hamstring injury, and the 2025 fifth-round pick represents McGowan's main competition for the backup role behind workhorse Jonathan Taylor. The Colts will wrap up preseason play next Saturday against the Lions.

Colts' Seth McGowan: Gets start in preseason opener
McGowan carried the ball five times for 17 yards in Thursday's 13-13 preseason tie with the Patriots. He also lost a fumble.
The rookie seventh-round pick got the start in the Colts' backfield with Jonathan Taylor held out and DJ Giddens (hamstring) sidelined, but McGowan didn't exactly impress in his opportunity. Taylor's the unquestioned RB1 for Indy, if not the centerpiece of the offense, but if he were to suffer an injury, McGowan could find himself handling the bulk of the early-down and goal-line work in the backfield with Giddens having done little to establish himself as a rookie last year.

Colts' Seth McGowan: Impresses with tough running
McGowan churned out a "handful of big gains" on the ground during the Colts' joint practice session with the Patriots on Tuesday, Joel Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports.
Erickson notes that the New England defense stymied both Jonathan Taylor and McGowan throughout the first half of practice, but the Colts' ground game was more effective when the session shifted to the red-zone portion after a special-teams period. McGowan, a seventh-round rookie out of Kentucky, has been serving as the Colts' No. 2 back behind Taylor for most of camp while DJ Giddens has been sidelined by a hamstring injury and has drawn positive reviews for his physical running style. McGowan could still have the early edge for the top backup role even if Giddens is able to get back on the field in the near future, though the performance of both players over one more joint practice and three preseason games will carry the most weight when it comes to depth-chart slotting.

Colts' Seth McGowan: Could be emerging as top backup
McGowan has emerged as the Colts' top backup running back during training camp, James Boyd of The Athletic opines.
Per Boyd, with DJ Giddens having been sidelined with a hamstring injury, McGowan has seen added reps of late with the first- and second-team offense. While Jonathan Taylor is the Colts' undisputed top back, and those behind him on the depth chart are off the fantasy lineup radar as long as he's healthy, the pecking order behind him remains of interest in the event that he misses time for any reason. Though Giddens still has a chance to make a push for the No. 2 role ahead of Week 1, he'll first need to get back on the practice field to build any momentum toward that end.

At this stage, McGowan, whom the Colts took in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL, is competing with DJ Giddens for slotting behind undisputed top back Jonathan Taylor. While the player who emerges as the team's No. 2 backfield option will hold limited fantasy lineup appeal as long as Taylor is healthy, his backup situation is worth monitoring ahead of Week 1 in the event Taylor misses time this season for any reason.

Colts' Seth McGowan: Taken by Indianapolis
The Colts selected McGowan in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft, 237th overall.
McGowan had a tumultuous college career, which saw him dismissed from Oklahoma's program after being arrested in April of 2021. He didn't see the field again until 2024 with New Mexico State and ended his college career with Kentucky in 2025, when he turned 165 carries into 725 yards and 12 touchdowns along with 19 catches for 126 yards over 11 games. McGowan has good size with a 6-foot, 223-pound frame, and he has the flexibility and strength to move around defenders, though he's not as explosive as other backfield prospects. There will be questions around his character heading into his NFL rookie season, but he'll have the opportunity to prove himself in Indianapolis, where he'll compete against DJ Giddens and Ulysses Bentley for rotational snaps behind lead back Jonathan Taylor.
