Chargers' Deane Leonard: Not playing Week 1
Leonard has been ruled out ahead of Sunday's game against the Cardinals due to an abdominal injury.
Leonard was unable to practice all week while recovering from an abdominal injury, and his next chance to make his 2026 regular-season debut will be Week 2 against the Raiders on Sunday, Sept. 20. Rodney Shelley will be the primary depth option at corner behind Cam Hart, Donte Jackson and Tarheeb Still, with Nikko Reed and Kaiir Elam being candidates to be elevated from the practice squad for Week 1.

Chargers' Deane Leonard: Back with Bolts
The Chargers are slated to sign Leonard to a one-year, $2 million deal, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
The 26-year-old corner from Ole Miss appeared in just eight regular-season games for the Chargers last season due to a knee injury. However, he's operated as one of Los Angeles' best special-teams players over the last two years, logging 355 special-teams snaps and 13 total tackles. Expect Leonard to maintain a similar role ahead of next season.

The Chargers designated Leonard (leg) for return from injured reserve Tuesday, Kris Rhim of ESPN.com reports.
The move opens Leonard's 21-day practice window. He's yet to appear in a game this season after being injured during the preseason. Tarheeb Still (knee), Cam Hart, Benjamin St-Juste and Donte Jackson have been handling the bulk of the cornerback duties for Los Angeles through eight weeks.

Leonard exited Sunday's preseason game against the Saints with an apparent leg injury and did not return, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
Leonard was helped off the field by the Chargers' training staff after playing 21 defensive snaps. He's in the mix to land one of the top reserve jobs in Los Angeles' secondary, as long as his injury isn't severe. Leonard appeared in 10 regular-season contests last season, and logged eight tackles (six solo) and three pass breakups.
