Riley Sheahan: Announces retirement
The NHLPA announced Wednesday that Sheahan has retired and will transition into coaching and development.
Sheahan was a first-round pick by the Red Wings in 2010 and appeared in 637 regular-season games between Detroit, Pittsburgh, Florida, Edmonton, Buffalo and Seattle over parts of 12 years in the NHL. He tallied 74 goals, including 12 on the power play, 194 points, 383 hits and 286 blocked shots at the NHL level before heading overseas across the past few seasons.

Riley Sheahan: Signs in Switzerland
Sheahan has inked a contract with EHC Biel-Bienne in Switzerland, TSN's Chris Johnston reports.
The Sabres terminated his contract earlier in the week when he refused to go to the AHL after Buffalo sent him down. The Sabres then placed him on unconditional waivers and terminated his contract once he passed through. Sheahan had no points in two games with the Sabres this season and three helpers in six games with AHL Rochester.

Riley Sheahan: Goes on unconditional waivers
Sheahan was placed on unconditional waivers Sunday with the intent to terminate his contract, Lance Lysowski of The Buffalo News reports.
Sheahan told the Sabres that he didn't want to report to the minors again following his Tuesday demotion. He will look for an opportunity to play elsewhere. Sheahan has appeared in just two games with Buffalo this year. He had three assists in six contests with Rochester earlier this month.

Sheahan was assigned to AHL Rochester on Tuesday.
Sheahan appeared in two games with the Sabres last week, including his season debut Nov. 16 against Vancouver. The Sabres activated Mattias Samuelsson (knee) from injured reserve in a corresponding move.

Sheahan has 635 games of NHL experience for the Red Wings, Penguins, Panthers, Oilers, Sabres and Kraken, so it would seem he likely has the inside track for a spot in the lineup given the Sabres' injury concerns. Still, that experience hasn't seen Sheahan get into a game this year yet, with him instead plying his trade in the minors and logging six games for AHL Rochester in which he's tallied three assists.

Sheahan hasn't been in the lineup yet this season and could see some playing time in the minors if he clears. In 69 games with Seattle last year, he posted four goals and 17 points.

Sheahan signed a one-year, $950,000 contract with the Sabres on Wednesday.
Sheahan spent last season with the Kraken, posting 17 points in 69 contests in a bottom-six role. The 30-year-old previously played with the Sabres in 2020-21, logging 13 points in 53 contests. His deal is two-way, so while he'll get a $100,000 raise at the NHL level, it doesn't come with any additional job security.

Sheahan benefited from an Islanders clearing attempt deflecting oddly off the glass. It went right to the center at the net front, and he tucked it inside the post for the Kraken's second goal.
