Senators' Alex Formenton: Reportedly ends hockey career
Formenton (personal) is not pursuing a hockey contract in 2024-25 while awaiting a September 2025 trial for charges of sexual assault from an alleged incident that occurred during a 2018 Hockey Canada event, Steve Warne of The Hockey News reports.
Two of the other players facing charges from that incident, Dillon Dube and Michael McLeod, have signed KHL contracts for 2024-25. Formenton is instead working in construction, and given that he is two years removed from any NHL action, it is unlikely he will resume his playing career once his trial is complete. Ontario Superior Court Justice Bruce Thomas said, "It is clear each of the applicants has a need to work or find work not only to sustain themselves, but to pay their expenses, which at this point include legal fees." Formenton will remain on the Senators' reserve list as an unsigned player until his signing rights lapse Sept. 13, 2026. All four of the other players facing charges were effectively released by their teams in June when none of them received a qualifying offer, but Formenton's status is different since he has played overseas the last two seasons while not signed to an NHL contract.

Formenton (personal) has been directed to surrender to London, Ontario police to be charged with sexual assault in connection with an alleged incident that occurred during a 2018 Hockey Canada event, TSN reports.

The five individuals are accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a London hotel on June 19, 2018, following a Hockey Canada Foundation golf and gala event. Formenton, who hasn't played in the NHL since 2021-22 but is on the Senators' reserve list as an unsigned restricted free agent, remains on an indefinite leave of absence from Swiss club Ambri Piotta.

Formenton appears to be banking on a strong year in Switzerland in order to bolster his position at the bargaining table ahead of next season.

Senators' Alex Formenton: Can't play in NHL in 2022-23
Formenton didn't sign with Ottawa before the 5 p.m. EST deadline Thursday, which makes him ineligible to play in the NHL for the rest of the 2022-23 campaign, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.
Formenton is a restricted free agent, which is why there was a deadline for him to agree to a contract. Ottawa can still re-sign Formenton or trade his negotiating rights to another team, but because the deadline has passed, he still wouldn't be able to play in the NHL until next season. The 23-year-old forward had 18 goals, 32 points, 59 PIM and 101 hits in 79 games in 2021-22.

Senators' Alex Formenton: Tallies twice Tuesday
Formenton scored two goals on seven shots and added three hits in Tuesday's 4-3 shootout win over the Canucks.
Formenton hadn't gotten on the scoresheet since his goal March 26 versus the Panthers, so this was an unexpected burst of offense. The 22-year-old has showed promise in spurts this season with 17 tallies, 13 helpers, 152 shots on net, 98 hits and a minus-12 rating through 74 outings. He'll continues to see a middle-six role, but his lack of consistency makes him a risky option in most fantasy formats.

Senators' Alex Formenton: Exits win early
Formenton (undisclosed) was removed from Sunday's game in the third period for what coach D.J. Smith called "precautionary reasons," Ian Mendes of TSN 1200 Ottawa reports.
The 22-year-old forward opened the scoring in a 4-1 win over the Capitals with a short-handed goal in the first period before taking a big hit from Garnet Hathaway later in the afternoon that could wind up being looked at by the league. Formenton has 11 goals and 22 points through 42 games in his first full season in the NHL, and if he winds up missing additional time, Ottawa could have trouble replacing him in the top six with Josh Norris (shoulder) and Drake Batherson (ankle) still on injured reserve.

The second-round pick from 2017 is up to 12 points, 50 shots, 35 hits, 19 PIM and a minus-3 rating in 27 contests. Senators' Alex Formenton: Two points in losing effort
Formenton scored a short-handed goal and added an even-strength assist in Tuesday's 5-3 loss to the Islanders.
Both points came in the third period, as the Sens tried in vain to rally from a 4-1 deficit. On the season, the 22-year-old has five goals and seven points in 21 contests.

Senators' Alex Formenton: Strikes twice in rare win
Formenton scored twice on two shots in Thursday's 3-2 win over the Hurricanes.
Talk about efficiency. Formenton needed just two shots and 9:41 of ice time to double his season goal total, helping Ottawa snap a six-game losing streak. Perhaps the 22-year-old winger still has another level to his game that he's yet to unlock, but Formenton's current fourth-line role on one of the league's worst teams just doesn't cut it for fantasy purposes.
