Canadiens' Alex Barre-Boulet: Gets one-year deal
Barre-Boulet signed a one-year contract with the Canadiens on Monday.
The full financial details of Barre-Boulet's agreement weren't disclosed, but it's a one-way deal, so the 27-year-old will make the same amount regardless of whether he plays in the AHL or NHL. He had six goals and nine points across 36 regular-season outings with Tampa Bay in 2023-24. The Quebec native also provided four goals and 19 points in 23 regular-season appearances with AHL Syracuse. Barre-Boulet might make Montreal's roster out of training camp, but he'll probably be a frequent healthy scratch.

Lightning's Alex Barre-Boulet: More scratches than not
Barre-Boulet has dressed in just five of Tampa Bay's 15 games in 2024.
He has just two shots and three hits in those five contests, while skating limited ice time (6:31-11:50). Barre-Boulet is an undersized buzzsaw with offensive talent, but he needs lots of ice in a top-six situation to truly shine. He won't get that in Tampa Bay.

Lightning's Alex Barre-Boulet: Scratched against Florida
Barre-Boulet was a healthy scratch Wednesday in a 3-2 loss to Florida.
His ice time had dropped to under eight minutes in the previous two contests, so his scratch didn't come as a surprise. Barre-Boulet is an offensive-minded forward who is best suited on the wing in the top six, but the Lightning generally deploy him on line four. He needs opportunity to knock for him to unleash his potential.

Lightning's Alex Barre-Boulet: Finds scoresheet in loss
Barre-Boulet scored a goal on three shots in Thursday's 5-1 loss to the Predators.
Barre-Boulet scored Tampa's lone goal in the first period Thursday, one-timing a feed from Brandon Hagel to give the Lightning an early 1-0 lead. The goal is Barre-Boulet's first point since Nov. 7 -- the 26-year-old forward had been scoreless in his last nine games while serving as a healthy scratch in five contests. While Barre-Boulet can offer some scoring upside in the Lightning's top-six, it's hard to rely on consistent production at this point. He has five goals and eight points through 21 games this season.

Lightning's Alex Barre-Boulet: Extends point streak to four games
Barre-Boulet provided a goal and an assist in Tampa Bay's 4-3 overtime loss to Seattle on Monday.
Barre-Boulet went from being on waivers Oct. 10 and only getting called back up from the AHL on Oct. 12 because Tyler Motte (upper body) was hurt in the season opener, to becoming one of the Lightning's hottest forwards. The 26-year-old is on a four-game scoring streak, contributing three goals and five points in that span. He served in a top-six role and on the first power-play unit Monday, finishing the contest with 15:24 of ice time. Although he'll have a very tough time maintaining that spot on the Lightning, Barre-Boulet did provide 24 goals and 84 points in 69 outings with AHL Syracuse last year. He's struggled to find his way in the NHL, but he is capable of making an offensive impact under the right circumstances.

Lightning's Alex Barre-Boulet: Scores in second straight game
Barre-Boulet scored a goal Tuesday in a 3-0 win over Carolina.
Barre-Boulet has found the back of the net in two straight games. He pushed the score to 2-0 late in the second period when he played give-and-go with Darren Raddysh. A nice tip and the puck was behind Pyotr Kochetkov. The 26-year-old winger saw only 11:11 of ice time Tuesday, but part of that was on the top line. Barre-Boulet must be in a top-six situation to optimize his skills, so shrinking ice time is a concern.

Lightning's Alex Barre-Boulet: Skates on top line
Barre-Boulet played 16:57 Tuesday in a 3-2 overtime loss to Buffalo. He had one shot and one minor penalty.
He skated on the top line with Brayden Point and Nikita Kucherov, and while Barre-Boulet didn't produce points, he also didn't look out of place. It's the kind of offensive opportunity that Barre-Boulet needs to prove he belongs in the NHL and not the AHL. Keep any eye on his progress.

Barre-Boulet is skating on the third line in training camp alongside Nick Paul and Tanner Jeannot.
Barre-Boulet had a great year in the AHL in 2022-23, finishing second overall among scorers in both assists and points (69 games; 24 goals, 60 assists for 84 points). "He has proven all he can prove in the American League," said head coach Jon Cooper. "There are spots on this team open, more than there probably have been in the last five years." Barre-Boulet skates well and can score, so he needs to play to that strength to earn a gig out of camp. So far, so good.

Lightning's Alex Barre-Boulet: Pops up on waivers
Barre-Boulet was placed on waivers by Tampa Bay on Monday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
Barre-Boulet's waiver designation, along with that of Gemel Smith, could be an indication that either youngster Gabriel Fortier or Cole Koepke is close to earning a spot on the 23-man roster. Still, the Bolts could just be making procedural moves as neither Fortier nor Koepke needs waivers before being reassigned to the minors. Even if Barre-Boulet does make the Opening Night roster, he figures to fill a bottom-six role.
