Sogaard made his first start of the season Sunday and looked surprisingly competent, as he was less than five minutes away from posting a shutout until Rasmus Andersson scored with a wrister late in the third period. The 25-year-old isn't expected to see regular playing time any time soon, and now that Linus Ullmark, who operated as the backup Sunday, is back with the team, Sogaard should return to AHL Belleville. This means Ullmark should return to the No. 1 role with James Reimer as his backup.

Senators' Mads Sogaard: Starting Sunday against Vegas
Sogaard will start Sunday's game against the Golden Knights, Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia reports.
Sogaard was brought up from the minors Saturday and backed up James Reimer in a 4-1 loss to the Hurricanes. With the Senators on the second leg of a back-to-back, it will be Sogaard's net to defend Sunday. The 25-year-old has appeared in one game this season, stopping 11 of 16 shots against the Avalanche on Jan 8. He'll face a Golden Knights squad that's coming off of a big win against Maple Leafs on Friday.

According to Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia, Sogaard's return to the NHL roster will provide Ottawa with some weather insurance between the pipes, with the team set to host Carolina on Saturday and Vegas on Sunday. In his lone NHL appearance this season, Sogaard allowed five goals on 16 shots in an 8-2 loss to Colorado on Jan. 8.

Sogaard relieved Leevi Merilainen during the second period. While Sogaard isn't on the hook for the loss in this outing, his awful performance was what put the game out of reach for the Senators. Merilainen ultimately returned to the crease for the third period. Sogaard's standing within the Senators' organization has been dropping over the years, and the 25-year-old may be shipped back to AHL Belleville due to this outing, though Hunter Shepard isn't much of an upgrade for the backup role. The Senators' next game is Saturday in a tough matchup versus the Panthers.

Sogaard posted a 31-save shutout in AHL Belleville's 7-0 win over Utica on Sunday.
Sogaard had a fantastic performance, but he also received plenty of support from his offense. This was his first shutout of the campaign and the third of his AHL career. For the season, the netminder is at a 2-6-3 record with a 3.47 GAA and an .885 save percentage. Sogaard could be in line for a call-up to the Senators while Linus Ullmark (personal) is on a leave from the team, though veteran AHL netminder Hunter Shepard has been a little better for Belleville this season and is also on a two-way deal.
