Pirates' Chase Shugart: DFA'd by Pittsburgh
The Pirates designated Shugart for assignment Thursday, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
The move makes room on the 40-man roster for first baseman Ryan O'Hearn, who agreed to a two-year, $29 million contract with the Pirates in December. Shugart spent most of the 2025 season in the majors with the Pirates and posted a 3.40 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, five holds and a 31:17 K:BB across 45 innings.

Pirates' Chris Devenski: Gets opportunity with Pittsburgh
The Pirates signed Devenski to a minor-league contract Thursday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
Devenski was with the Mets organization in 2025 and spent most of his time with Triple-A Syracuse, though he did appear in 13 major-league games and posted a 2.16 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 14:5 K:BB across 16.2 innings. The veteran reliever should have the opportunity to earn a bullpen spot on the Opening Roster for Pittsburgh.

Pirates' Joey Bart: Reaches deal with Pirates
The Pirates and Bart avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.53 million contract Thursday, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.
Bart's second year in Pittsburgh didn't go nearly as well as his first, as he finished the 2025 campaign with a .249/.355/.340 batting line and only four home runs in 93 contests. The 29-year-old is in line to share catching duties with Henry Davis again in 2026.

Pirates' Justin Lawrence: Settles with Pittsburgh
The Pirates and Lawrence avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.225 million contract Thursday, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.
Lawrence had been arbitration-eligible for the second time. The righty was limited to only 17 appearances in 2025 due to injury, but he was highly effective when on the bump, yielding just one run with a 23:8 K:BB over 17.2 frames. Lawrence should operate in a middle-relief role in 2026.

Pirates' Oneil Cruz: Settles with Bucs at $3.3 million
The Pirates and Cruz avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $3.3 million contract Thursday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
It's a nice raise for Cruz, who had been eligible for salary arbitration for the first time. The 27-year-old is coming off a disappointing showing in 2025, having slashed just .200/.298/.378, but he did provide fantasy managers with 20 home runs and 38 stolen bases.

Pirates' Dennis Santana: Reaches deal with Pirates
The Pirates and Santana avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $3.5 million contract Thursday, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.
Santana finished the 2025 season with a 2.18 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 60:17 K:BB over 70.1 innings, picking up 16 saves along the way. The 29-year-old reliever is the favorite to open the 2026 season in the Pirates' closer role.

Pirates' Ryan O'Hearn: Gets $29 million from Pirates
The Pirates signed O'Hearn to a two-year, $29 million contract Tuesday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
He'll have the opportunity to stretch the total guarantee to $30 million if he reaches $500,000 in incentives each year of the deal. O'Hearn has slashed .277/.343/.445 over the last three regular seasons between the Orioles and Padres and made his first All-Star team in 2025. The left-handed hitter reversed a career trend and hit better versus lefties (.832 OPS) than righties (.795 OPS) in 2025, so he could be an everyday player in Pittsburgh. With Spencer Horwitz manning first base, O'Hearn will likely see most of his playing time at designated hitter.

The Pirates signed Fletcher to a minor-league contract Monday, that includes an invitation to spring trainingAlex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.
Fletcher elected free agency back in October after being removed from the White Sox' 40-man roster and he'll now head back to the National League. The 28-year-old has slashed only .233/.280/.325 in parts of three big-league seasons and, even with the Pirates' lack of outfield depth, will likely begin the 2026 season at Triple-A Indianapolis.

Pirates' Marco Luciano: DFA'd by Bucs
The Pirates designated Luciano for assignment Friday, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.
Just two weeks after being claimed from San Francisco, Luciano will once again enter the waiver process following Pittsburgh's acquisitions of Brandon Lowe, Jake Mangum and Mason Montgomery on Friday. The 24-year-old Luciano -- once considered a top prospect in baseball -- could still be an attractive waiver target for other clubs despite his career .590 OPS in the big leagues.

Pirates' Tsung-Che Cheng: Pushed off 40-man
The Pirates designated Cheng for assignment Friday, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.
The Pirates needed to clear some roster space after bringing in three players via a three-team trade with Houston and Tampa Bay on Friday, and Cheng will end up as one of the casualties. The 24-year-old infielder made his MLB debut near the beginning of last season, going 0-for-7 with three strikeouts before being sent back to the minors. He didn't fare well at the plate in Triple-A either, slashing .209/.310/.271 with 36 RBI, 37 runs scored and 18 steals across 398 plate appearances at Indianapolis.
