  • Steelers' Will Howard: Cleared from concussion protocol

Howard (head) announced after Thursday's practice that he has been cleared from concussion protocol, Alan Saunders of SteelersNow.com reports.

Howard experienced concussion-like symptoms during last Thursday's 28-27 preseason loss to Buffalo, though he still managed to finish the first half. The 2025 sixth-round pick has has yet to play a regular-season snap for the Steelers, and he's unlikely to do so again in 2026 unless both Aaron Rodgers and Mason Rudolph are sidelined simultaneously at some point.

  • Steelers' Will Howard: Enters concussion protocol

Howard suffered a concussion during Thursday's 28-27 preseason loss to the Bills, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports.

Howard is now in the NFL's five-step concussion protocol and will need to be consistently evaluated by an independent neurologist to progress back to full contact practice. The quarterback is currently an emergency option on the initial 53-man roster behind Aaron Rodgers and Mason Rudolph.

  • Steelers' Will Howard: Has possible concussion

Howard (head) is being evaluated for a potential concussion after Thursday's preseason finale against the Bills, Alan Saunders of SteelersNow.com reports.

Howard played the entire first half, completing nine of his 15 pass attempts for 69 yards and two touchdowns with just one interception. The quarterback also took three sacks for 22 yards before exiting the game at the half. With Sunday's cutdown approaching, Drew Allar's nine of 18 for 88 yards and no touchdowns, picks or sacks may not have inspired much confidence either. The No. 3 role behind Aaron Rodgers and Mason Rudolph may default to Allar if Howard is indeed suffering from a significant head injury.

  • Steelers' Will Howard: Picked off twice by Jets

Howard completed 10 of 15 passes for 74 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in Friday's 17-0 preseason loss to the Jets.

Howard played the first half of Friday's shutout loss and didn't help his case to win the top backup job. Drew Allar didn't produce any points after halftime, either, so Friday's big winner in the competition to back up Aaron Rodgers was probably Mason Rudolph, who was idle alongside Rodgers. Howard's pair of interceptions were especially concerning considering they came against a Jets defense that didn't muster a single interception during the entire 2025 regular season. Both Howard and Allar will likely get a chance at redemption in Thursday's preseason finale against the Bills.

  • Steelers' Will Howard: Set to start Friday

Howard is set to start Friday's preseason game against the Jets, Chris Adamski of TribLive.com reports.

Howard will start the contest before eventually handing the reins off to rookie Drew Allar. The 2025 sixth-round pick appears to be competing with Allar for a 53-man roster spot, meaning Friday's game should be important for both young quarterbacks.

  • Steelers' Will Howard: Slides down spot with Rodgers back

Howard's chances of starting in 2026 have diminished, as Aaron Rodgers signed a one-year contract with the Steelers on Monday.

Prior to Rodgers re-signing, Howard was in position to compete for a starting role against veteran Mason Rudolph and rookie third-round pick Drew Allar (ankle). Rodgers is comfortably situated atop the quarterback depth chart now that the 42-year-old starter has returned to Pittsburgh for the start of OTAs, while Howard will have to jostle for positioning on the depth chart and could realistically miss out on making the team at all.
