Machado (quadricep) went 2-for-9 with a run scored in two games since being reinstated from Triple-A Sugar Land's 7-day injured list Thursday. Machado had been sidelined since early in spring training due to the right quad injury before he was finally cleared to debut for the Triple-A club last week. The 32-year-old infielder hit .286/.500/.357 over four rehab games in the rookie-level Florida Complex League prior to being activated by Sugar Land.

Manager Joe Espada said Saturday that Machado has a Grade 2 quadriceps strain and could miss the remainder of camp, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Machado sustained the quadriceps injury in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins. He received a non-roster invitation to spring training and this setback likely derails any slim chances he had of making the Opening Day roster. Machado played 74 games with Triple-A Sugar Land in 2023 and slashed .230/.369/.356 with seven home runs and 33 RBI over 293 plate appearances.

Astros manager Joe Espada said that Machado suffered a right quadricep injury in Wednesday's 6-1 win over the Marlins in Grapefruit League play, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. The 32-year-old infielder suffered the injury while running the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning and was replaced in the bottom of the inning. Espada said Machado will be re-evaluated Thursday before the team knows more about the extent of the injury. Machado is attending camp as a non-roster invitee but is a long shot to crack the Astros' Opening Day roster.

Machado departed Wednesday's game versus the Marlins with an apparent knee injury, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Machado appeared to tweak his knee while running the bases and had to limp off the field. In camp as a non-roster invitee, Machado will be evaluated before more is known about his injury.

The Astros reassigned Machado to minor-league camp Tuesday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. Machado spent almost all of last season in Triple-A, where he slashed .291/.372/.390 over 522 plate appearances. He had a solid spring as well and could contribute off the bench for Houston if he continues to succeed in the minors, but he would have to be added to the 40-man roster first.
