  • Red Sox's Sonny Gray: Traded to Red Sox
    By RotoWire

The Red Sox acquired Gray and cash considerations from the Cardinals on Tuesday in exchange for Brandon Clarke, Richard Fitts and a player to be named later or cash considerations, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Gray had a no-trade clause but has agreed to waive his no-trade clause in order to facilitate a deal to the Red Sox. The 36-year-old posted a 4.28 ERA (3.39 FIP) and 201:38 K:BB over 180.2 innings for St. Louis in 2025, marking the second straight year he reached the 200-strikeout plateau. Gray is owed $35 million in 2026 and has a $5 million buyout on a $30 million mutual option for 2027.

  • Gray said Wednesday that he will "definitely" consider waiving his no-trade clause this offseason in order to facilitate a deal to a contender, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Gray declined to waive his no-trade clause when asked last offseason, but he's had a change of heart as the Cardinals continue their rebuilding phase. The right-hander is owed $35 million in 2026 and has a $5 million buyout on a $30 million club option for 2027, so it's a substantial chunk of salary for a contender to take on. However, there is sure to be plenty of interest after Gray had another strong season, posting a 4.28 ERA (3.39 FIP) and 201:38 K:BB over 180.2 innings.

  • Gray allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out seven batters over six innings in a no-decision against San Francisco on Wednesday. Gray fared pretty well Wednesday, notching his second straight quality start and 14th overall this season. He threw 99 pitches (63 strikes) and racked up an impressive 18 whiffs. This was presumably the final time Gray will take the mound this season with the Cardinals on the verge of being eliminated from postseason contention. If that ends up being the case, Gray will finish with a 4.28 ERA. 1.23 WHIP and 201:38 K:BB over 180.2 innings spanning 32 starts while posting a 14-8 record. This is the second straight season, and the third time in his lengthy career, that he's reached 200 punchouts in a campaign.

  • Cardinals' Sonny Gray: Secures 14th win
    By RotoWire

Gray (14-8) allowed one run on nine hits and struck out seven without walking a batter over six innings to earn the win over the Brewers on Friday. Gray was a little generous with the hits, but he was able to limit the damage to a Sal Frelick solo shot in the third inning. This was Gray's first quality start of September -- he's allowed 13 runs over 22.1 innings across his four outings this month. For the season, he now has a 4.33 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 194:36 K:BB through 174.2 innings spanning 31 starts. He's lined up for his season finale next week in a road start versus the Giants, and he's within striking distance of earning his third 200-strikeout campaign.

  • Gray did not factor into the decision in Saturday's extra-inning game against the Brewers, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out eight across five innings. Gray was in line for his 14th win of the season -- which would have tied a career high he set twice -- but the Cardinals squandered their 6-1 lead after yielding five runs across the eighth and ninth innings. He generated 14 whiffs on 95 pitches (58 strikes) and extended his streak of logging at least five strikeouts to 16 games. Gray is up to 187 strikeouts on the season, which is tied with Yoshinobu Yamamoto for seventh most in the National League. Gray is in line for a rematch against the Brewers at home next weekend.
